You are the founder of a new village during the middle ages, in the years after a great plague. The loss of so many people has created big problems for the survivors. Many of the people the villagers used to depend on for essential things like food, shelter, and clothes are gone. The roads are full of refugees seeking a new beginning. They come to you, hoping to settle on your land and make a living.

ReferencesIf you've played the board game before, the rules are exactly the same. You can skip to Conduct.
The following rules are for a standard 5-player game with no expansions. However, if the current game has an expansion, the rules will be listed in the post below.
If there are any inconsistencies between this ruleset and the official rulebook, the latter prevails.
The rules are taken from the official rulebook: [link]
The Kickstarter expansion rules: [link]
If you prefer a video, here's one from Watch It Played: [link]

OverviewVillagers is a card drafting game for up to 5 players. Each player controls a village, looking for skilled villagers to populate their village from the ground up. Everyone's playing to get the most coins.

The game is played over several rounds, each with a draft phase and a build phase. In the drafting phase, players will take turns taking cards (the villagers) from the pool of cards (the Road). In the building phase, they will play the cards in their hands to their play area (the Village).

There are two opportunities for income: the First Market roughly a third of the way into the game, and the Second Market at the end of the game. Depending on how their Villages are looking, they will score coins. At the end of the Second Market, the player with the most coins wins.

Pre-GameAt the start, the Road is populated with villagers: 2 each of every kind. There are 6 face-up villagers (all their info is shown) and 6 stacks of (players ×2) face-down villagers (only their type is shown). The starting 6 face-up villagers are always the same: Poulterer, Blacksmith, Carpenter, Cooper, Thatcher, and Harvester. Players then receive 5 villagers for their hands, 8 coins, and a starting Founder villager for their Villages with the 2 Gold side up. A player is assigned randomly to be the first player.

Draft PhasePlayers take turns starting from the first player, taking villagers one at a time from the Road. Each player must take 2 villagers plus however many Food in their Village, up to a combined total of 5 villagers. A player may take either a face-up or a face-down villager. If a player takes a face-up villager, a replacement is drawn from the left-most stack. If a player takes a face-down villager, it's shown for everyone to see.

When all the stacks have been emptied, the replacements will instead be drawn from the Reserve. At this point, players may draft from the Reserve. If the Reserve has been emptied, no further replacements are drawn. Play continues in turn order until either everyone hits their limit or there are no more villagers on the Road.

At the end of the phase, the players each take all their drafted villagers to their hands. There's no limit as to how many villagers can be held on a player's hand. The remaining face-up villagers are discarded if they have a coin (marked with ¢), and replacements are drawn from the Reserve, or the left-most stack if the Reserve is exhausted. Each villager is then given a coin from the Bank for the next Draft Phase.

Build PhasePlayers take turns starting from the first, placing the villagers from their hand to their Village. They can play 2 villagers plus however many Builders in their Village at the start of their turn, up to a combined total of 5, but they can choose to build under this limit. Each player plays all their villagers at once before moving on to the next player. Multiple copies of the same villager can be played on the Village.

Solitary and Special Villagers can be played as is, without chains. Otherwise, to place villagers with a chain, every villager that appears before them must either be placed simultaneously or have already been placed to their Village. Only the last villager in theirs chain is active to determine drafting and building limits. They are also the only villagers whose rules are in consideration when the Markets arrive.

The first villager in each chain can support up to 2 villagers before requiring a new one. The first villagers for Ore, Hay, and Wood (Miner, Hayer, and Lumberjack: collectively the Basic Villagers) cannot be found on the Road. To get them, players return one villager from their hand to any stack on the Road to get one Basic Villager of their choice. This can be done up to 3 times in one turn and do not count towards the limit. There are 10 of each; once one runs out, no more claims can be done for that Basic Villager.

If a villager has this symbol: ☒, they have to be unlocked before they can be played. The unlocking villager (the Unlocker) is shown with this symbol: ⚿. If a player has the corresponding Unlocker, they'll get 2 coins from the Bank to place on top of the Unlocker. If another player has the Unlocker, they'll have to pay that player 2 coins from their supply, which is placed on top of the Unlocker. If multiple players have the Unlocker, they can choose who to give 2 coins to. If no one has the Unlocker, the player pays 2 coins to the Bank to unlock. If a player can't pay, they can't play the villager.

Special Villagers are also available to be played. Some of them get discarded immediately; these do not count towards the build limit. Others can be placed on the Villages; these do count. If a villager must be played at the same time as a Special Villager, the villager must be able to be placed there.

Play continues in turn order. At the end of the phase, the player who was second in turn order becomes the first player for the next round. If there's no Food in a Village at this time, the Founders in that Village (if active) will be flipped from the 2 Gold side to the 1 Food side. This flip is irreversible in normal circumstances.

Spoiler: Sample Village
This Village would score 23 coins in the First Market and 29 coins in the Second Market. Two villagers have coins on them: the Carpenter unlocked 3 villagers and has 6 coins on top; the Cartwright unlocked 1 villager and has 2 coins on top.

Market PhaseWhen the first two stacks have been emptied, the First Market will commence at the end of the round. All the Villages will earn coins equal to all the Golds on their active villagers, as well as all the coins on top of their villagers. These coins are not removed; they'll be scored again on the Second Market. Silvers are not scored here.

When all the stacks have been emptied, the Second Market will commence at the end of the round. Scoring works the same as the First Market, but the Silvers are scored as well. Silvers will be scored first before Golds, then the coins on top of villagers are scored last.

At the end of the Second Market, the Village with the most coins wins. If there's a tie, the one with the fewest number of villagers in their Village wins. If there's still a tie, it's a joint victory.

Villager Clarifications
Apprentice
steals an inactive (covered) villager from any Village to put in your own Village. The Apprentice then fills the spot of the stolen villager. This action counts as 1 build action. Any Village includes your own Village, so you can swap out your own villagers. However, the stolen villager must be able to be placed in your Village. Additionally, you cannot steal other players' Founders, but you can swap out your own (and even choose which side you'd like), so you could potentially have 2 Grains chains in your Village.
If you play an Apprentice on a locked villager, the locked villager will need to be unlocked using the same rules.
If you play an Apprentice on a Monk, you're free to use the Monk as a Wild, without any consideration as to what role the Monk played on the previous Village. The Monk must still be covered by the end of your turn.

Monk
acts as a Wild card. You can put the Monk anywhere that's not the end of a chain, meaning you'll always have to cover the Monk immediately with another villager.

If the Apprentice and the Monk act as the first in their respective chains, both of their branches must be of the same type. No mixing of types on the same chain.

Smuggler
earns you coins equal to half of the Gold value of one of your villagers in your Village, rounded up. Specifying one is optional; the default is the highest-valued villager of yours. The Smuggler is discarded after use, so they don't count towards your Build Limit.

Tinner
ignores the unlocking mechanic for the villagers played together with themself. Note that the villagers themselves must already be able to be placed in your Village. You can mix and match: playing some with the Tinner (to avoid paying) and some without (to claim coins). There's nothing stopping you from playing Tinner on their own; you'll just get no use out of it. The Tinner is also discarded after use, so they don't count towards your Build Limit.

Agent
scores Silver equal to the coins on top of one villager in your Village. They're automatically assigned to the one with the most coins, unless specified otherwise.

Peddler
scores 3 Silver for every 2 Gold text, not every 2 Gold. A Village with a Cartwright (9 Gold) and a Fromager (15 Gold) would score 3 Silver from these 2 villagers, not 36 Silver.

Wood Carver
scores Silver equal to the combined Gold values of all your Wood villagers in your Village. This does not take coins on your Wood villagers into account.

Any villager that counts symbols counts their own symbols as well, if applicable.
If a villager gives an amount of Silver for every 2 symbols, odd amounts are rounded down to the nearest even number before processed.

ConductAll site rules apply. Please be courteous to your fellow players.

Pre-game
  • To join, simply post in the thread. Optionally, you can tell me what you'd name your Village and I'll put that in.
  • Once 3 players are in, I'll set a 48 hour countdown for the 4th and 5th players to join. The game will start after the timer runs out or the 5th player joins, whichever comes first.
  • You cannot join the game after it's started, but you can sign in for the next game. I might also PM you if the game needs replacements.
  • If you signed in from the previous game, you'll have until the start of the next game to re-confirm it.
  • Once all players are in, I'll randomise the turn order and PM you with your hand of villagers.
Game-wide rules
  • Turns are signalled with your name on the title of the thread and a post declaring that it's your turn.
  • Hand updates will be done via PM after each phase, but you can always request one outside of this time.
  • If at any time you need to refer to the current game state, you can find it on the first post.
  • Every player can see each other's Villages, their number of coins, and the types of their villagers in hand.
  • Editing your turn is allowed up until the point in which I updated the thread with your turn, then it's locked. As a rule of thumb, you'll always have at least 15 minutes from when you posted to change your mind.
Draft Phases
  • You'll have 24 hours to pick a villager from when I post how the Road looks at the time.
  • If you see that the player before you has gone, you may go before indicated, but you may miss out on new villager options.
  • If you take a face-down villager, I'll reveal the details on the next post. To take one, just specify the type or stack.
Build Phases
  • You'll have 48 hours to post your
    entire
turn from when I post your Village. If possible, keep your turn in a single post.
  • With the post, I'll declare your build limit and a list of every Unlocker in play from every Village.
  • If you see that the player before you has gone, you may go before indicated, but please take note of the Unlockers in play as this list could expand between turns.
  • You'll see in your PMs that I've labelled each villager in your hand with a number. If you'd like to exchange for a Basic Villager, include what villager number you'd like to return (or what type if you're only holding one villager of that type), what stack to return to, and what Basic Villager you'd like.
Do not say the actual name of the villager you're returning.
You don't need to number the villagers you play in any other context.
  • If you'd like to play a locked villager, you only need to specify a target Unlocker if there are 2 different players other than yourself who own it. If you don't specify, I'll assume you'll be paying to the closest player in turn order from you.
Unless explicitly stated otherwise, this is what I would do:
    • If you have that Unlocker, you'll claim 2 coins from the Bank.
    • If you have two of them, the 2 coins would go to the one with more coins.
    • If someone has the Unlocker and you don't, you'll pay 2 coins to the Unlocker.
    • If someone has two of them, the 2 coins would go to the one with fewer coins.
    • If no one has the Unlocker, you'll pay 2 coins to the Bank.
  • Villagers will be placed in the order you list them, left to right. Make sure to get the ordering right, because sometimes you can play an Unlocker, which is then used immediately to unlock your next locked villager in the same turn.
  • If your turn is ambiguous, I'll post my best interpretation of your turn, and you'll have until the timer is up for you to either confirm or clarify what you mean. If there's less than 24 hours on the timer, I'll amend it to 24 hours. When the timer runs out, I'll assume compliance.
  • If your turn is invalid (such as trying to put a villager without following the chain), I'll post about the error and you can correct it. If there's less than 24 hours on the timer, I'll amend it to 24 hours, but after 3 timer amends in a row, I'll stop amending the timer. When the timer runs out, depending on the error, I'll make the following decisions in order:
    • If you go over your build limit, I'll only consider the left-most villagers you list. The rest go back to your hand.
    • If you didn't specify which villagers to apply Apprentice or Monk to, they will not be played. If you didn't specify such for Tinner (since you're allowed to mix and match), I'll assume you're using the Tinner for your entire turn.
    • If your ordering is invalid but there are valid orderings for your play, I'll go with the one that requires the least number of swaps from your stated turn, favouring the ones listed first.
    • If you're missing parts of the chain before your villager (this includes forgetting to claim Basic Villagers), that villager will not be played.
    • If you don't have enough money to unlock a locked villager, that villager will not be played.
    • If, after following through all that, you ended up with no villagers to play, I'll prod you.
  • Here are a few examples of build turns. You may post variations of these, as long as I can understand what you're going for. These also include what info you should include when playing each of the Special Villagers.
Exchange #3 for a Lumberjack and put it on Stack C. Do the same for #5 for a Hayer, and put it on Stack A. Play Carpenter and Bed Builder.
Bed Builder is unlocked with Carpenter. Because Carpenter is played first, the player can claim 2 coins from the bank.
Play Apprentice, swapping for [name]'s Graper. Play Tinner alongside Fisher and Vintner.
Tinner eliminates unlocking costs, so they can be played directly.
Play Monk on Miner, and put Spelunker on top of it. Play Smuggler (on Cartwright)*.
*This is optional. Without specifying, I'll assume you're playing them on your highest-valued villager.
Smuggler is unlocked with Shipwright. Because there's no further info, the player will claim or pay following the rules above.
Activity requirements
  • If the timer runs out without you submitting your turn, I'll prod you and give you another 24 hours to make the turn.
  • If the prod timer runs out, I'll start looking for replacements, unless it's the final round: you'll be allowed to stay but without prods or further extensions. Run out of time and your turn will be automatically played.
  • While a player is being replaced or is being automatically played, I'll draft and build for them, following these priorities:
    • whether they can continue or complete a chain
    • whether they start a chain
    • whether they have a Builder (except when there's 3 or more in their Village, in which case ignore)
    • whether they have Food (except when there's 3 or more in their Village, in which case ignore)
    • decreasing order of Gold (Silver after the First Market)
    • decreasing order of Silver (Gold after the First Market)
  • While drafting:
if there's a tie on which villager to draft, I'll take the villager that has been there the longest.
  • While building:
determine all villagers to be placed first up until their Build Limit, then if any of them need Basic Villagers, return the remaining villagers in number label order to the left-most stack.
  • If you're going on V/LA, please post in the thread or notify me via PM.
  • During V/LA, I'll add 24 hours to each of your timers and I'll PM you when the timer's up.
  • After another 24 hours, I'll play for you following the actions above.
  • You will not be replaced while on V/LA. However, if the break is particularly lengthy, you might want to consider replacing out altogether.
  • If you'd like to replace out, please post in the thread or notify me via PM. I'll search for a replacement and play following the actions above.
If you have any questions or issues, don't hesitate to ask in the thread or via PM. Let's have a good session!

Current Game Announcements

V/LA announcementI'm going to be V/LA from
7 May 00:00 to 9 May 23:59
, both UTC. During this time, all timers will be stopped.

I may or may not be able to update the game in this time period, and the V/LA end date could be moved forwards or backwards by at most a day.

At the end of the period, I'll PM everyone to notify that the game is back up. I'll also add 24 hours to everyone's first deadlines to compensate.

Apologies for the inconvenience caused, and thank you for understanding!

V/LA extensionHi everyone, unfortunately I underestimated how long the break is going to take, so I'm pushing the V/LA end date one day back. The new end date is
10 May 23:59 UTC
. There should be no more pushbacks after this one. Thank you for understanding!

Spoiler: Game 1

Holiday policyDuring the week of Thanksgiving, I'll act as if everyone's on V/LA (no one can be replaced) and adjust the timers to 3 days for Draft Phases and 5 days for Build Phases. This will be my policy for holidays, so it'll be the same arrangement for Christmas/New Year.
Exact times are 23 Nov 00:00 to 29 Nov 23:59 and 24 Dec 00:00 to 1 Jan 23:59. All times in UTC.

Mod ErrorI discovered that I noted the Mason's abilities incorrectly from the board game. To balance the game and ensure a smooth transition, this change will be performed after the end of Build Phase 2. I apologise for the inconvenience.

Clarification on ApprenticeAdded these lines under the Apprentice's clarification section:
If you play an Apprentice on a locked villager, it will need to be unlocked using the same rules.
If you play an Apprentice on a Monk, you're free to use it as a Wild, without any consideration as to what role the Monk played on the previous Village. The Monk must still be covered by the end of your turn.

Clarification on AgentThe Agent scores Silver equal to coins on top of one of their villagers. This has always been the intention, but currently the ability text can allow for alternate interpretations of this rule. As such, the ability text will be updated the next time I send hand updates. Sorry for any confusion caused.

Spoiler: Game 2

Game 2 Variant: Developments ExpansionThere are 12 Developments, split in three categories. Each Development has a certain requirement, like having the most Hay symbols, or the most villagers with coins, and so on. Fulfilling a Development gives the player a reward; most of the time it's coins, but a few give out advantages for the game.

At the start of the game, one Development from each category is randomly drawn and the three of them stay for the entire game. After each Build Phase but before any Markets, there will be a
Development Phase
where the winner of each development is announced. That player would keep the Development and its benefits until the next Development Phase, even if someone else beats them before that. If there's a tie for a certain Development, no one gets it. Developments are not scored during Markets.

Clarification on Windmill (dev)
Ore Chain
Image

Image

Image

▼ C
Because it may cause confusion, I want to clarify that for the purposes of evaluating who gets the Windmill, chains with two branches only count as one chain altogether. As an example, the table to the left is counted as one chain, not two.

The Developments section in the first post has been updated to reflect this. You still need two or more villagers per chain for the chain to be counted.

Mod Error - Windmill affecting Market(place)I missed one line on the clarifications section of the expansion rules regarding evaluating the Developments. Turns out,
Symbols on other Developments are not included.
This means that the Food gained from the Windmill
does not count
towards evaluating the Marketplace. I think I must have missed it because there's a similar sounding line in the main rule text:
...the symbols on the Developments are not included when scoring the Silver (...) Symbols in your Village.
and I must have thought that they're describing the same scenario. They aren't, in fact, and I apologise for the error.

The correction will be applied on Development Phase
4
. The next Development Phase (#3) will still be evaluated on the previous assumption of the Windmill affecting the Marketplace, because of the possibility that Draft Phase 3 was played with this assumption in mind.

While here, I also want to point out that the Food gained from the Windmill will not be counted on the Second Market. This was implied here:
In post 293, vincentw wrote:Developments are not scored during Markets.
but it was worded more explicitly in the second quote box above.

New ruling pushed forwardAfter a further deliberation with all players, everyone has agreed to apply the corrected ruling on Development Phase 3 instead of 4.

Spoiler: Game 3

Same-person unlocking choice and AgentDuring the game, I often thought that if a person holds 2 of the same Unlockers, then it doesn't matter to whom does someone looking to unlock pays the 2 coins. In fact, this
does
matter when evaluating the Agent, as the Agent scores equal to coins on one villager and, say, a 10-0 split is more advantageous to a 6-4 split. We haven't had someone win by single-digit amount of coins, but 2nd place downwards have been decided by Unlocker coins in the past, so this would serve as a preventive measure.

Going forward, unless mentioned otherwise, I'm going to assume that in the event this happens in the future, a player using their own Unlockers would pay to the one with more coins, while anyone with a choice of 2 Unlockers belonging to the same, other person would pay to the one with fewer coins.

Welcome, Farren, Sirius, and Felissan! The game will start soon.

We have 2 pre-ins left to confirm: Mizzytastic and Nancy Drew 39. Sign-ins are still open for the replacement / Game 2 queue; I'll open 3 slots. Mizzy and Nancy will have until the timer is out to reconfirm their ins before I start pulling from the queue.

Every Village has drafted its first villager. Now might be a good time to look at your PM'd hand and figure out what villager to draft next.

It's now time for the second cycle. One more villager for each player. First, as before, is the village of

.

Mizzytastic
, it's your turn. You can pick a face up or a face down villager, the latter of which will be revealed after you select it. You have (expired on 2020-11-11 20:09:00) to pick a villager.
