Game Rules

Objective: Bid for the necessities of building a glorious Egyptian dynasty. When the ravages of time (or fate) tear your hard work down, do it all over again. But don't get too greedy - time waits for no one. The player with the most points after three epochs wins!

Spoiler: Setup (Board / Bag)

• The gameboard has two tracks: the Treasure Track and the Ra Track.
• The Treasure Track has room for eight Treasure/Disaster tiles and one Sun Tile. It starts out with the {1} Sun Tile and nothing else.
• The Ra Track has room for 8/9/10 Ra Tiles in a 3/4/5 player game. It starts out empty.
• The Bag starts with 180 tiles, distributed as follows:
• 140 Treasure Tiles (25 Rivers, 12 Floods, 25 Pharaohs, 8 Gods, 5 Gold, 25 Civilizations {5 each of 5 different types}, 40 Monuments {5 each of 8 different types})
• 30 Ra Tiles
• 10 Disaster Tiles (2 Droughts, 2 Funerals, 4 Unrests, 2 Earthquakes)

Spoiler: Setup (Players)

• Each player starts with 10 points and a set of LIVE Sun Tiles. Each Sun Tile has a unique numerical value. Sets are randomly distributed from the following:
• 3p: {2/5/8/13*} ; {3/6/9/12} ; {4/7/10/11}
• 4p: {2/6/13*} / {3/7/12} / {4/8/11} / {5/9/10}
• 5p: {2/7/16*} / {3/8/15} / {4/9/14} / {5/10/13} / {6/11/12}
• The player that receives the set with the Sun Tile with the highest value (*'d) goes first.
• Turn order goes down the player list, wrapping around, skipping any player that does not have any LIVE Sun Tiles.

Spoiler: Regular Turns

On your turn: choose ONE of the following actions:

• DRAW a tile from the bag. The Treasure Track must not be full.
  - I will reveal the Tile publicly.
  - If it is a Treasure Tile or a Disaster Tile, I will put it on the Treasure Track; your turn ends.
  - If it is a Ra Tile, I will put it on the Ra Track.
  -- If the Ra Track is still not full, this will start an Auction. Your turn ends and an Auction begins. You have involuntarily started this Auction.
  -- If the Ra Track is now full, the Epoch ends immediately. No Auction will occur. See the Epoch section for details.
  
• CALL for an Auction. This ends your turn; an Auction begins.
  - If you could have DRAWn a tile but chose to CALL instead, you have voluntarily started this Auction.
  - If you could not DRAW (because the Treasure Track was full), you have involuntarily started this Auction.
  
• STEAL a Tile. You must have a God Tile in your inventory to take this action. Discard the God Tile and take any Treasure or Disaster Tile on the Treasure Track. (You cannot take the Sun Tile on the board.)
  - Your turn ends.
  
• If a player can only CALL (full track, no God Tiles), I will process that CALL without waiting for the player to make it.

Spoiler: Auctions

• When an auction begins, everything on the Treasure Track - including the Sun Tile - is up for grabs.
• Starting with the player AFTER the one who started the Auction, every player (in turn order) gets one opportunity to BID or PASS.
• If BIDDING, specify a LIVE Sun Tile to bid with. (You may not bid with a DEAD Sun Tile. If you bid, you must bid higher than the most recent bid.)
• If PASSING, nothing happens. If you voluntarily started the Auction AND everyone else PASSED, you may not PASS.
• If a player has only one legal move (no Sun Tiles that can beat the high bid; required to bid and only one Sun Tile left), I will process that bid without waiting for the player to make it.
• Whoever bids the highest valued Sun Tile wins the Auction. If no one bids, there is no winner.
• If there's a winner:
  - The winner must trade their winning Sun Tile with the Sun Tile on the board. Their new Sun Tile comes into play DEAD; it cannot be used to bid on auctions. Their old Sun Tile goes onto the Board for the next auction.
  - Note: if the winner has no more LIVE Sun Tiles, the winner is out for the rest of the Epoch. They can take no more turns; they can win no more auctions.
  - The winner must take every Tile on the Treasure Track. These Tiles go directly into the winner's Inventory.
  - If the winner wins any Disaster Tiles, they must discard two of their tiles AND the Disaster Tile. (Discarded tiles are removed from the game.)
  -- Drought: the winner must discard two Floods. If they don't have enough Floods, they must discard a River for each Flood they are missing.
  -- Funeral: the winner must discard two Pharaohs.
  -- Unrest: the winner must discard two Civilizations. (Winner's choice, if they have three or more.)
  -- Earthquake: the winner must discard two Monuments. (Winner's choice, if they have three or more.)
  -- If the winner has only one of the two tiles, they must discard the one AND the Disaster Tile.
  -- If the winner has none of the two tiles, they only discard the Disaster Tile.
• If there is no winner:
  - If the Treasure Track is full, discard ALL tiles on the Treasure Track (except for the Sun Tile).
  - Otherwise, nothing happens.
• Play resumes as normal, with the next player in line taking a regular turn.

Spoiler: Epochs / Game End

• The game lasts for three Epochs.
• An Epoch ends when one of the following happens:
  - All players are out of LIVE Sun Tiles.
  - The Ra Track fills up with Ra Tiles. (If this happens, the Epoch ends immediately; no final Auction is held!)
• Scoring occurs. (See Scoring for details. Note - Third Epoch is scored differently than the other two!)
• If this was the end of the First or Second Epoch, the game continues.
  - All DEAD Sun Tiles go back to being aLIVE; all players that were out are back in, taking their previous slot in the turn order.
  - Some Tiles are discarded after scoring. (See Scoring for details; Rivers, Pharaohs, Monuments, and Sun Tiles are kept; everything else is discarded.)
  - The player with the highest valued Sun Tile starts the new Epoch.
• If this was the end of the Third Epoch, the game is over.
  - The player with the most points wins.
  - If tied, the player amongst the tied players with the highest valued Sun Tile wins.

ACTIVITY / CONDUCT RULES

All site rules apply.

Spoiler: Deadlines / Holidays

Players have 48 hours from the time I announce their turn to take their turn.
When starting a timer, I will start the timer from the top of the next hour.
Any player may request a 24 hour extension for any reason or no reason at all - limit one extension per player per turn.
Note - no turn may ever last for more than 96 hours, even with extensions. (Exceptions: mod errors, holidays.)
Holiday Policy:
- All timers will be frozen on Thanksgiving (11-26-2020), Black Friday (11-27-2020), Christmas Eve (12-24-2020), Christmas Day (12-25-2020), New Year's Eve (12-31-2020), New Year's Day (1-1-2021), starting from 11:00 PM PST the night before until 11:00 PM PST the night of. Players are free to take turns while the timer is frozen, but resolution may be delayed.
- Additionally, all deadlines that fall during the *week* of a holiday will receive an extra 24 hours added, as if everyone was V/LA. The 96-hour rule will not be enforced during these weeks.

Spoiler: Missed Deadlines / AutoPlay

If a player misses a deadline, I will do the following:

First time: I will prod the player, giving them another 48 hours.
Second time: I will prod the player, giving them another 24 hours.
Third time (or if a prod is ignored), I will auto-play their turn, using the following rules:
- If no Auction is occurring: I will PASS if there are fewer than FOUR Treasure Tiles; I will CALL if there are FOUR or more Treasure Tiles. If any Disaster Tiles are present, the threshold to call increases by one for each Disaster present. I will not STEAL.
- If an Auction is occuring: I will assign a priority based on the number of Treasure Tiles. For each Disaster Tile present, increase each number by one:
- <4: PASS.
- 4: BID lowest tile if required or if 3+ LIVE Sun Tiles in stock, otherwise PASS.
- 5: BID 2nd-lowest tile if 3+ LIVE Sun Tiles in stock; bid lowest tile if 2 Sun Tiles left.
- 6+: BID highest tile.
If Auto-Play is invoked, I will contact the player to see if they wish to keep playing the game. If they do not, or if they do not respond within 48 hours of my contacting them, I will seek a replacement.
If the player wishes to remain in the game, they may - but their turn timer will be cut back to 24 hours with no more prods or extensions; AutoPlay will act for them if they miss any deadlines.
If a player on a 24 hour timer meets four deadlines in a row, I will restore their turn timer to 48 hours.

Spoiler: Takebacks / Error resolution

If a player wishes to change a decision:
- the player may change their decision up until I resolve their turn. Once resolved, their decision is final.

If a mistake, error, or illegal play occurs:
- If a player makes an illegal move, I will refuse the move and notify them both in-thread and via PM. The player will have until the timer runs out to change their move to a legal one.
- If the timer runs out on an illegal move, I will change the move instead of invoking AutoPlay or prodding.
- - If a player bids a DEAD Sun Tile (or a Sun Tile they don't have), I will change the bid to a legal LIVE Sun Tile, as close to the value of the DEAD Sun Tile as possible (higher over lower in the event of a tie).
- - If a player attempts to STEAL but has no God Tile, I will change the STEAL to a CALL.
- - If a player DRAWs but cannot legally do so, I will change the DRAW to a CALL.
- - If a player PASSes but cannot legally do so, I will change the PASS to a BID with their lowest LIVE Sun Tile.
- If a player changes their mind while I am resolving their turn and I do not see it before I post it, I will revoke the resolution and process their turn with the updated action.
- If I inadvertently reveal a tile that should not be revealed (if the above occurs, or if a mod error occurs), I will put that tile back in the bag and reshuffle the bag.

I'm not sure what changes may have occurred between editions of this game; I did find a game board implying the existence of a 2-player version (which my version does not support).

The only rule change I deliberately made is that used Sun Tiles are public knowledge in this game; in regular play, they are turned face-down (and thus private). I figure that since they start out 100% public, anyone who wanted to figure out what Suns someone had could just read the game's history and figure it out that way.

Since this is a four player game, the first space on the Ra Track will be permanently filled (marked with a FULL tag instead of EMPTY or RA). This space does not count against the 30 Ra Tiles in the bag; it will remain filled throughout the entire game, including the resets between Epochs.

Now rolling to distribute the Sun Tile sets. The player with the highest roll gets the set with the 13; second highest gets the set with the 12; third highest the set with the 11; fourth highest the set with the 10.

The person who gets the highest roll will also go first during the First Epoch; turn order goes by player list order from there.
