Rules

Inspired by Equinox's, Glork's and Ether's rulesets.

important bit
  • Day 1: up to 10 days, Day 2+ up to 7 days, Night: 48 hours.
  • Majority lynches
  • 36 hours before prod, 24 hours before replacement, 24 hour weekends
  • Bah posts allowed (limit: 1, free of game related content)
  • I have some unusual rules about animated GIFs, tiny text, and prodging. Scroll down for details.
  • Don’t be a dick

  1. Follow all site rules.

  2. Mod colour
    – My mod colour is
    grey
    ; don't use it.
  3. Behaviour
    - Don’t be a dick. This is a heated game but toxicity will not be tolerated. Attack the play not the player. If your fellow players tell you to stop, you must stop. If you do not stop, I will tell you to stop. If you still do not stop, you will be force-replaced. Asking people to stop voting you or to stop scumhunting you entirely doesn't count for this rule and you may find yourself lynched if you try it.
  4. Don't talk about ongoing games
    - You may not talk to each other about this game outside of threads I have created for this purpose. You may not talk about other ongoing games in this thread.
  5. Animated GIFs
    - are of the devil, but they are permitted behind spoilers if clearly labelled as such.
  6. Tiny text
    - is also of the devil, keep it 70+ please.
  7. Provable randomness
    - is against the rules. Saying that you rolled a dice is fine, using dice tags or random.org is not.
  8. Claiming scum
    - by yourself is fine. Claiming scum with another player is against the rules.
  9. Cryptography
    - is forbidden. Breadcrumbing is okay.
  10. Confirmation
    - You have about 72 hours to confirm your role and your alignment by PM. Game will start sooner if everyone confirms. Posting in a private topic counts as confirmation.
  11. Days
    - Day 1 lasts 10 days and other days last 7 days. Extensions may be granted if there are replacements, or if the majority of players make it clear to me that an extension is desired.
  12. Activity
    - You must post at least once every 36 hours or I will Prod you. You then have 24 hours to post in the game thread or I will replace you. If you come back before I find a replacement, you can stay. The activity timers run at half-speed on weekends. Players can request me to prod somebody early. This will only count as an official prod if you don't post before you would have been due for a prod. If you haven't posted in the 24 hours before the thread is locked for night, you must reply to the night start PM or you will be replaced during the night.
  13. Vacation/Limited Access
    If you need to be absent for longer than this, you should declare
    V/LA
    in bold in the thread like this: [
    b]
    @Mod: I will be v/la until Thursday
    [
    /b]. While you are V/LA, you will be nudged once every 54 hours. Two nudges equals one prod. If you have not posted game advancing content in 5 days, regardless of V/LA status, you will be replaced.
  14. Prodging
    - A naked "prod dodge" does not reset the prod timer. To avoid being prodded/replaced for inactivity, include some game advancing content in your prodges, such as "got prodded; xxxx is still scum."
  15. Quoting
    - You may not quote (or copy paste) any private information into the thread, including your role PM and any mod communication.
  16. Voting
    - Votes must be in bold in the format VOTE: Plotinus or
    Vote: Plotinus
    . Strong preference for using vote tags instead of bold tags. Unvotes are nice but not required. If I think it’s a vote, it’s a vote, no tricks. Type [
    v]Plotinus[
    /v] to vote and [
    uv]Plotinus[
    /uv] to unvote.
  17. Lynching
    - Days end early when a simple majority of players (50% of living players + 1 rounded down) vote to lynch somebody. If a majority is not reached at deadline or if a majority of the players vote for no lynch, the day will end without a lynch. At evens, 50% is sufficient for no lynch.
  18. Twilight
    - Begins when a majority is reached and lasts until I lock the thread. You're still alive until I flip you so you can talk in any game threads you have access to until then, but no votes or unvotes will be counted.
  19. Night
    - Night lasts at least 48 hours. The night phase can be shortened if every living player -- even those with no night actions -- agrees to it and if I'm not busy.
  20. Action submissions
    - You may submit actions via PM (if town) or PT (if scum). If the actions are not submitted by the deadline then you do nothing. You can change your mind as many times as you like before the deadline.
  21. Reminders
    - If I don't hear from you about your night actions, I'll PM you 24 hours before the deadline. This doesn't count as a prod. If I still don't hear from you, you will take no action.
  22. Notes PT
    - Let me know if you want a private thread to store your thoughts and feedback for the other players. This thread will be made public immediately after the game. You may draft posts in your notes PT but you may not talk about your notes PT in public. You definitely may not use the notes PT to demonstrate that you've had a town mindset in private all along; just put your town mindset in public to begin with and keep your notes to yourself.
  23. Play to win
    - this particular game, not some future one, and keep it fun!
The failure mode of clever is asshole.

Introduction and Tips
Here are some helpful links (a lot of them from our helpful wiki):

-> Forum Rules and Guidelines
-> The Glossary
-> Commonly Used Abbreviations
-> The Newbie Guide
-> Articles on How to Play Well (be sure to check the dates these were written/updated, as good advice changes over time)

Key Concepts and Tips

Activity

Try to check in at least once a day.
Besides the activity requirements listed in the moderator's original post, it's just necessary for a fun and healthy game that everyone
plays
. If you post very rarely, or only post a little bit at a time, you may get scumread for lurking. Even if you are not scumread for it, what's the fun in playing a game where multiple people are hardly participating?

Site Meta

Meta is the description of how people on Mafiascum like to play mafia. Things can be different on other online mafia sites, or if you play IRL, so it's good to know what's expected of you on this site. These aren't "rules", per se, but if you don't follow these guidelines it is likely things will go poorly for you on MS. Some examples are...

Random Voting Stage (RVS)

Games on MafiaScum almost always begin with what we call the Random Voting Stage (RVS). At this point in the game, we are in a low information game state (except the mafia, which know everyone’s alignment). As a way to provoke reaction, start a discussion, and try to determine alignment, people will usually vote for non-serious reasons. As the discussion progresses, we will eventually get the game moving and progress out of RVS.

Voting, L-x, and Hammers

L-x is a way to convey how far away a player is away from a lynch. For example, you should always announce that you are putting someone at L-1 (1 vote away from a lynch) so that someone doesn’t come along and accidentally vote for that players lynch. This also prevents Mafia-aligned players from coming along and placing the final vote to lynch (“hammer”) and claiming ignorance about doing so. You may also see L-2 and L-3 (2 votes away from a lynch and 3 votes away from a lynch, respectively).

Before you hammer a player, state your intent to hammer (usually done in bold) and ask the player to claim their role. This is done to prevent power roles from being lynched, and can sometimes get Mafia-aligned players to be caught (via counter claiming). It's best to then allow other players to react and discuss the claim before hammering.

Claiming Your Role

It is almost always best to not claim your role unless you are at L-1 and have been asked to claim as part of an “intent to hammer.” This is because, as a town power role (“PR”), if you out prematurely, you are likely to be night-killed (“NK’d”). As a Vanilla Townie (“VT”), claiming early helps the mafia team narrow down the setup and possible PR candidates. An exception to this would be if a mafia player claimed your role, claiming early to counter the false claim (“CC”) would out the mafia player, and would be a benefit to the town.

Do not fake claim a power role as town!
While it may help you avoid getting lynched, you might cause a real PR to out themselves by counter claiming - then the mafia will know who the PR is, and you will probably get lynched for lying to town. Feel free to fake a claim as scum, though, if you think it would help.

LyLo

LyLo is the shortened representation of “lynch or lose.” LyLo in the Newbie Queue is when there are 3 remaining players, 2 of which are town and 1 is mafia; or when there are 5 remaining players, 3 of which are town and 2 are mafia. It is important in these situations that the town aligned players do not carelessly vote like is done during RVS or early days, as the mafia player(s) can organize and instantly provide the necessary votes to lynch (“quickhammer”) and win the game.

Conclusion

Mafia is hard!
As town, it can be hard to figure things out, and stressful when people think you're scum.
That's okay!
Just share your thoughts on who you think is scum as they come to you, and don't be afraid to change your mind. As scum, it can be hard to lie convincingly, and stressful when people think you're scum. Don't let that scare you! Try to think of what you would post if you were town, and don't be afraid to "change your mind".

This is a game.
Have fun!

All role PMs have been sent out (in the order of the signup list so timestamps mean nothing)! We will start in (expired on 2019-06-03 18:30:00) or when [8/9] people have confirmed, whichever happens sooner.

The above clock and any others used throughout this game will be accurate from the time you loaded the page.

Edit: I edited the start time to be a couple hours later so that daystart will not happen in the middle of this programming competition. Of course, if most of you arrive sooner that we can start long before it begins!

peekay, simond, and teddyHasACult forgot the mafiascum existed or something. They are replaced by Jocus Aevorum, ClearlyClarity, and Imperator, in that order. Jocus Aevorum, ClearlyClarity, and Imperator have (expired on 2019-06-05 12:35:18) to confirm before I start looking for a replacement. Day 1 will start in a minute as soon as i find something cool for the votecount.

Official Vote Count 1.00
Problem B was pretty interesting in today's coding contest. I made it out to be more complicated than it was and spent a while writing some pretty complicated logic (that worked, but exceeded the timelimit for very large inputs), but there's actually a trick to it that you can solve a couple lines.
Spoiler: The key thing I was missing
was that either the array can be sorted perfectly or it can't.

LynchingWith 9 votes in play, it takes 5 to lynch.

Everybody
(0): Nobody

Not Voting
(9): Jocus Aevorum, zeebu, ClearlyClarity, pema22, Imperator, wolfcub, TTTT, Robbnva, LuckyOtter

Deadline:
(expired on 2019-06-13 19:00:00).

Please take a moment to familiarise yourselves with my ruleset because I have some rules you may not have encountered in other games before regarding animated gifs, tiny text, prodging and perhaps some other things.[/area]

Official Vote Count 1.01I started this Differential Equations course today. It is pretty fun so far. I am probably going to be relying heavily on Paul's Online Notes for practice problems because math isn't a spectator sport, it's really easy to watch the lectures and watch the stream of symbols flowing from the professor's chalk and imagine that you could do it too -- and by the tenth practice problem or so, it'll be true, but without them? nah.

Official Vote Count 1.08For me the hardest part of mathematics is the notation. I don't have a good memory for symbols, and especially remembering the orientations of the various squiggles is difficult for me, so I wondered if I could blame this on my inability to visualise stuff and found a cool question on math overflow about mathematicians with aphantasia, who approach math the way I do, just keeping track of connections with no pictures.

Official Vote Count 1.09I was curious about how blind mathematicians experience mathematics, assuming they would also have techniques to get around an inability to visualise things, and found an article about The World of Blind Mathematicians. It actually turns out that blind mathematicians can imagine things just fine, they just imagine things spatially, using proprioception, touch, and sound. If you've seen that videos of a sphere being turned inside out, the models for that video were created by one of the blind mathematicians in the article.

And of course when it comes to visualising things in the higher dimensions, the blind mathematicians were surprised that anyone would think being sighted would make it easier to imagine a 4D hypersphere, which is a pretty good point.

Official Vote Count 1.10
“Counting isn’t easy. Suppose your boss wants you to work from 8am to 11am, and mop floors 8 to 11. Simple – it’s one floor per hour, right?”

That sounds good if you’re not thinking clearly. But of course, if you follow that leisurely schedule, you’ll find yourself with one unmopped floor (and one angry boss) at 11am, three hours after you started.

It might seem that we count floors and hours differently, which is weird enough. But Azad isn’t done with his example. Here’s his kicker: he points out that if the boss had instead said “Mop floors 8 to 11 from April 8th to April 11th”, and you’d thought “Great, I can do one floor per day”, you’d have been right. So it seems we also count hours and days differently!
More about this kind of problem

Official Vote Count 1.12I am really excited about differential equations right now. I am only just starting to learn it, so what I am primarily excited about is just the basic concept of it. So in regular calculus you have an equation like f''(x) = x and maybe you take the derivative of that and get f'''(x) = 1 or you take the antiderivative and get f'(x) = x2/2 + c, and you might have more than one variable like f(x, y) = xy and then you can take the partial derivative with respect to x, fx = y, or the partial with respect to y, fy = x, or you can integrate it like ∬ xy dy dx = x2y2/4 + c1y + c.

So far so good, right? But if you're taking a derivative, you're doing it to the whole function at once, or maybe to each part of a vector. You might have a vector <î, ĵ, ǩ> and you might take the cross product with <fx, fy, fz>, but that's still basically the same operation to everything in the equation.

In differential equations, we get to work with problems like: y' = 2y. It looks so similar to the y' = 2x that we know and love and recognise as y = x^2, but it's different. Watch:

dy/dx = 2y

dy = 2y dx

dy / 2y = dx

integrate both sides

(ln |2y|)/2 + c = x + c

the c's are just constants of integration, they can be combined.

ln |2y| = 2x + c

eln |2y| = Ce2x

2y = Ce2x

y = Ce2x, where C is the constant of integration.

Isn't that fun?

LynchingWith 9 votes in play, it takes 5 to lynch.

Official Vote Count 2.04So I've done almost two weeks worth of complex analysis in two days but I hit a snag. At first I didn't even know the name for the concept I was having trouble with, all I really understood that there was some thing with a φ and an iterative function of a z and that you map the z to some other function with the help of the φ thing to make it easier to calculate -- I understood why it worked and when you'd want to do it, I just didn't know...what...to do to create it on my own.

After some aimless googling, I was able to realise what I was missing: a few decade ago in my algebra class, we learned how to find the inverse of a function. I didn't really understand it at the time and then I went on to not need this information anywhere in the intervening years. So I read up about inverse functions and it's so much easier now than it was when I was a kid. Literally all you have to do is solve for the other variable and swap the names.

So you have φ(z) = z2 + 3. Swap the variables: z = w2 + 3. Solve for w: sqrt(z - 3) = w. So now you have φ-1(z) = (z - 3)1/2.

This is, I think, a fairly common stumbling point in higher mathematics: you can be missing some puzzle piece that you were supposed to learn in childhood and it won't make a lick of sense until you relearn it. But since this time, you know why you're learning it, you know what you need the puzzle piece for, it's a lot easier to learn.

I think i would have been a much better maths student in general if every step of the way the teacher had been able to say stuff like "Knowing how to take the inverse of a function will make it a lot easier for you to evaluate what a fractal is doing because you can put an equation through a function to make it easier to work with, do what you want to do, and then put it back through inverse of that function later, to undo the bits you added in.

LynchingWith 7 votes in play, it takes 4 to lynch.

Official Vote Count 2.05Here's a fun probability puzzle. Suppose you have a fair 6 sided dice, just one of the ordinary ones that has the numbers 1 to 6. Each time you roll the dice, you add the new number to the sum of the previous numbers. On average, how many times do you expect to roll the dice before the sum is divisible by 3? What about 2? 7? I'll tell you in another vote count.

Official Vote Count 2.06So you have a dice and you are adding up the numbers you roll until you they divide by 3.

On your first roll, you need to roll a 2 or a 6, so you have 1 in 3 chance.

But suppose you don't.
Spoiler: Last chance to work it out yourself
Suppose you roll a 1 or a 4 instead. Then on your second roll you need a 2 or a 5 to be divisible by 3, so still a 1 in 3 chance for that roll too.

Or if you rolled a 2 or a 5 on your first roll then you need a 1 or a 4 on your second roll. 1 in 3 chance.

So the key insight here is that every single turn you have a 1 in 3 chance of meeting your goal, so on average, it will take you 3 turns to meet your goal.

I think it's pretty clear that the same logic applies to being divisible by 2: on your first turn you have a 1 in 2 chance of getting a 2, 4, or a 6, but if you get an odd number your first time, you have a 50% chance of getting another odd number on your second turn, so each turn that's half a chance of finishing, so on average it'll take 2 turns.

But what about 7? Did it only work because 2 and 3 divide 6 evenly? Let's reason it out. On turn 0 there's a 0% chance that you'll roll a seven. But on turn 2 there's a 1 in 6 chance that you'll roll a number that adds with your previous number to get 7:

1 -> 6
2 -> 5
3 -> 4
4 -> 3
5 -> 2
6 -> 1

So 16.7% chance we're done on turn 2. Suppose we're not done on turn 2, what would that look like? Well then our number, whatever it is, when we divide it by 7, the remainder will either be 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6. So after the first turn where we had 0% chance, we would expect that it would take another six rolls on average to be divisible by 7.

Spoiler: But is is true for all n and for all k?
I am pretty sure it is true for all n and k where n is a multiple of k, and for some other cases like 5 and 3 where there is some symmetry in the intervening steps, and according to my monte carlo simulation, for large n and k, the answer is very close to k, but not exactly. And I've found a counter example with n = 4 and k = 3, where the sum of the probabilities at step 3 is 95/96 which is almost, but not quite, the 1 it needs to be for the answer to be 3. So what is the real answer? What is the pattern to the answers for when it is k and when it is not k? I'm trying to find out!

Official Vote Count 2.07The hardest part of the dice problem was some of the arithmetic. I'd draw out a little table of 0s, 1s, 2s, etcs, and the multiplier for each row, and then I would try to count how many 0s were in the table, and uh it turns out "how many 0s are in this string of 7 numbers that I just wrote down" is a really hard problem to solve actually. Hard enough that I'm starting to wonder if I have acquired a new disability.

2340123 <-- these numbers count twice
3401234 <-- these numbers count twice, too
4012340
0123401

How many 0s are in that rectangle? how many 1s? how many 2s? 3s? 4s? The hardest part of the problem, I swear.

So I wrote a computer program that could do it for me, not just the cases where it's just a 7 sided dice and counting modulo 5 which a child could do for single digit addition practice, but also the cases where you are trying to get a sum divisible by a thousand, which isn't reasonable for a human to solve on paper.

The thing about maths is that a lot of people who feel bad at maths mean they are bad at sums, but most mathematicians use a computer for sums that are unreasonable to carry out by hand. Computers are good at sums!

Edit: I wrote this vote count before it was pointed out to me that I'm calculating the wrong thing, that I need to factor in the chance of getting to step i at step i and to weight things by the length of the turns, so probably the story of the probability problem will continue in future vote counts.

LynchingWith 7 votes in play, it takes 4 to lynch.

Official Vote Count 2.08I will return to the probability problem soon but I was up past my bedtime watching the first few of these topology lectures on youtube from the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences. the professor has a very engaging style and does lot of demonstrations and making the students guess what will happen before he does the next step. The first couple lectures are mostly about playing with möbius strips and the importance of drawing pictures.

Official Vote Count 2.09When I was younger, I noticed a cool thing about iterative squaring: sometimes this leads to what I called a dead end, where the last digits of the answer remain stable. An easy example of this is 10. no matter how many times you multiply ten by itself, the last digit will always be 0, and the number of zeros will grow. Dead ends are kind of boring, though the one with the 5's is the least boring of these: progressively more and more of the final digits will be fixed in place but they differ from each other:

5

25

0625

3
90625

152587
890625

2328306436538696
2890625

Other numbers cycle, for example there's a 21 -> 41 -> 81 -> 61 pattern:

21

4
41

1944
81

378228593
61

14305686902419853283
21

Other numbers feed into cycles, such as 11, 31, 71, 91 which feed into the 21 -> 41 -> 81 -> 61 loop

But not 51 or 01, which dead end.

You can divide the two digit numbers into 7 groups based on which system they end state they feed into, and then you can subcategorise them by whether they dead end immediately (like 76 does), feed into a loop, loop, or feed into a dead end (like 24, 26, and 74 do).

It turns out there are maths words for this game! Dead ends are called
fixed points
in maths. Numbers that feed into loops are
preperiodic
and Numbers that loop are
periodic
. I am not sure yet what feeding into a dead end is called in maths.

And studying numbers in this way is useful in complex analysis -- you examine the orbit of a complex number to see what happens to it through iterative squaring. Does it blow up to infinity, getting larger and larger? Or does it stay really close to where it started? Does it approach a number and then stay there or does it go back and forth between a few numbers?

Spoiler: What do you call a map of how the complex numbers behave when we play this game? Pretty picture inside
Yeah, it's this thing:

Image

Outside of the Mandelbrot, all the points go to infinity under iteration, and the usual colourings let you see how fast that happens. This is a map of the inside of the Mandelbrot set, the part that is usually left black in the images you see. You can play with an applet here.

I have thought about the deadline situation. I don't want to extend it by too much because newbie games are supposed to be fairly quick and it is important to maintain momentum, but the deadline does fall fairly early in the day in parts of the world, so we can push it back a little so that everybody will be awake in the hours before the deadline. There's a codeforces contest starting at 16:35 UTC tomorrow that I would like to participate in so I have changed the deadline to end a half hour after the contest ends. All of America will have been awake for a few hours by that time probably and it will be late evening Europe and Africa will just be getting home from work, and Asia and Australia will be able to cast their final votes before they go to bed. This will be about 2.2 days since the last replacement, and a little over a full day's extension compared to the original deadline.

edit: realised that was only 2 hours, so how about after the contest instead

There are 5 votes in play, not 7. It takes 3 to lynch, not 4. I have edited the votecounts for this dayphase to reflect this. Sorry for any confusion.

Official Vote Count 3.04In order to apply L'Hôpital's Rule to complex numbers, you must perform some extra tests on the function to make sure you'll get a correct answer. The first check is that the magnitude of the derivative divided by the derivative of the magnitude of the bottom function needs to be defined and continuous near zero (not necessarily at 0 itself). I'm not really sure how you would apply the other three checks without already knowing the limit.

Four straight roads cross a plain. No two are parallel, and no three meet in a point. On each road is a traveler who moves at some constant speed. If Blue and Red meet each other at their crossroad, and each of them meets Yellow and Green at their respective crossroads, will Yellow and Green necessarily meet at their own crossroad?
