Newbie #328 - Niceton or Naughtyton? (Game over!!)

Post Post #0 (isolation #0) » Wed Mar 21, 2007 7:15 pm

Post by Mr. Flay »

The mafia are up to no good in Niceton (home of small, defenseless newbies), and it's up to the seven of you to figure out whodunnit.

Players
(see endgame for roles and results):
  • leee
  • DogMom
  • Sudo_Nym
  • DeathSauce
  • Mojo
  • Garung,
    was
    shadowdeath

  • Machiavellian-Mafia
Game over; see page 14 to see who won.

Of course, this would all be a lot easier if you weren't sure that some of you haddunnit. Two of you, in fact, though you're not sure who else is what. Here's the possibilities:

Roles:

2 people are
Scum:
The Mod wrote:You are
Scum
, along with your partner _________. Your goal is to eliminate the pro-town players so that only you remain; you win if this happens. During the Day, try to blend in with the rest of the players, and get someone lynched (if that someone is not your partner or yourself, that will make things much easier). You may talk with your partner when it is not Day, and send me a choice via PM of who you wish to kill.

Note: You may talk with your partner privately during confirmations to plan strategy, but no kills will happen until Night One.
Either 1 person, or nobody, is a
Doctor:
The Mod wrote:You are the
Doctor
, and you can protect people from harm. Each Night, you may send me a choice via PM of who to protect; if they come under attack by the scum, they will live. You win if the scum are eliminated, so choose wisely at Night, and try to lynch correct during the Day.

Note: Doctors are 100% effective in Newbie Games (no quacks). You may not protect yourself.
Either 1 person, or nobody, is a
Cop:
The Mod wrote:You are the
Cop
, and you can tell good from bad. Each Night, you may send a player's name to me; I will let you know if your investigation shows that they are Scum or Town. You win if the scum are eliminated, so choose wisely at Night, and lynch well during the Day.

Note: Cops are 100% effective in Newbie Games (no sanity issues). You cannot investigate yourself.
The rest of you (3, 4, or 5, for those keeping count) are
Townies:
The Mod wrote:You are a
Townie
, and you've got no special powers at Night. No investigations, no protection, no gun to shoot people. But, you do have a vote, which is quite powerful (though no more powerful than anyone else's vote). Help lynch scum during the Day, and you will win the game, along with the rest of the Town.
This is commonly known as the setup, for reasons mostly known to Norinel.

Even though most games start with Night, newbie games begin with Day once everyone has confirmed that they understand their role. Scum are allowed to talk by PM in the pregame, but no other "night actions" may be taken.

Rules:
  • Votes should be in bold for them to count, like this:
    Vote: John
. Unvotes should likewise be bolded (
    Unvote: Jane
) so that I can spot them easier.
  • A simple majority of votes (1/2 the number of living players plus one, rounded down) will achieve a lynch and end the Day. Unvoting after that point will not save someone's life. If a deadline is imposed, the required number of votes will be lowered, so be careful.
  • Nights will last up to 72 hours, but may be shorter if all night choices are in before the deadline.
  • Dead men tell no tales. If you get killed, stop talking until the game is over (a single "Bah!' post with no game information is acceptable).
  • Do not discuss this game with other players outside of this thread, unless your role PM specifically stated you could do so (as scum, and then only at night).
  • Do not directly quote any PMs you receive from me; I have already posted the roles above, but this holds true for any future messages you receive from me as well.
  • If you see something you don't understand,
    ASK!
Newbie games are here for people to learn and understand; either I or one of the other players will respond to your question. If it has to do with your role, feel free to PM me directly.
  • Treat this game as a commitment; if you're going to be gone for longer than 48 hours (not counting weekends),
    let us know
. I will replace severely inactive players, but they may choose to lynch you themselves first.
  • Have fun; don't be an ass;
    participate
    !

Correct, but since Sage was never even here, I took him off the list entirely.

I will prod all players that have not posted yet, to make sure as many return as possible. I may be able to recover a few of the lost posts from the Google cache, but I'm not very hopeful, so best to restate your points if they were dropped.

Thanks for your patience, folks.

Sudo: The downtime was because we were suddenly raised to the top of the queue for a one-time move to a higher-capacity server (getting rid of the Grey Screen of Annoyance/CPU errors). Unfortunately the backup JEEP took hours before that move got corrupted, which meant we had to revert to one several days older. Hence the missing posts, which are NOT normal (and this should be the last downtime we experience for a long while).

Any vote changes in vanished posts are unfortunately gone forever (the cache was not helpful after all), though some of you you may or may not be able to 'remember' certain things that happened. Whether you trust other players' memories is, of course, up to you.

--------------------------------------
When it comes right down to it, one vote can make the difference between life and death? Democracy is dead? Far from it, but DeathSauce certainly is, as he swings from a high tree in the city square. After all is said and done, though, it is discovered that he was just another citizen of your not-so-fair down; as the lights go down, you wonder what will happen to you next?

DeathSauce, Townie, was lynched Day One.

It is now Night One; any and all night decisions are due to me by the end of Tuesday, April 24th.

Mojo's wrongful execution of his fellow townsperson might have driven some people to drink or suicide; but his reaction tended more toward disbelief and shock. He sat in the dark of his house, rolling over the day's events and the tragic final moments, until midnight had come and gone. With the moon high in the sky, he finally roused himself from his torpor and walked to the living room window, looking out over the dewy grass. A movement outside caught his eye, and he twitched the curtain aside for a better look.

Another wrong decision, as it pinpointed his location for the hidden shooter. The plate glass window crashed to the carpet moments before Mojo's body fell, and stayed there until morning, when some of you discover it. Tragedy piled upon misfortune, and the town dwindles further...

Mojo, Townie, was killed Night One.

It is now Day Two; with five of you left alive, just three votes will cause a lynch.

You know what
omertà
is, don't you? It's a code of silence and tacit approval of the criminal activity going on within your town. That silent endorsement allows the Mob to flourish and take over, if nothing is done to stop it. Is that what you want here?

Machiavellian-Mafia could see the writing on the wall. It wasn't hard to see, in fact, since it was spraypainted on the side of his garage in two-foot tall letters.
YOU'RE DEAD!
is sort of hard to miss... but it seemed to be an idle threat, until he went back inside and the gas heater underneath his kitchen exploded.

You find most of him in the morning. It's just as well that some parts couldn't be discovered....

Machiavellian-Mafia, Townie, was killed Night Two.

Final Vote Count of Day Three:

leee - 2 (Sudo_Nym, DogMom)

Not Voting - 1 (leee)
----------------------------------
With quiet finality and a sense of dread, DogMom pulls the lever and leee's body is soon swinging in the courtyard. She was pledged to save lives, not take them... and now another person has died because of her actions. Was it the right choice? Depends on your definition of right, I suppose, because Sudo_Nym puts an end to her suffering very shortly thereafter...

leee, Townie, was lynched Day Three.
DogMom, Doctor, was killed in the endgame.

Sudo_Nym (and Garung/shadowdeath, posthumously),
Mafia
, win!

DeathSauce, Mojo, and Machiavellian-Mafia were townies.

DogMom protected Sudo both nights; he really did play a tight game. Actually everyone did a good job though, and sometimes the endgame comes down to a coin flip that goes bad. Sometimes scum are so airtight you can't even see them coming... I could have wished M-M had been a little more active while he was alive, but I'm not sure it would have made a big difference. I especially enjoyed reading DM's "Wall of Words". This was kind of a long game, but never really got to dragging too badly...

DogMom wrote:I'd still like the Mod and our ICs to pop back in and critique the game...
Err? I'm not sure what else I can add - you guys actually played a pretty solid game, Sudo was just bloody airtight. Let me look back over the thread...

shadowdeath was kind of shady in the early game, which people picked up on. He did a lot of "I think Person X has a good point", or "I'm just voting randomly", which might have been a clue. He also never really paid much attention to/put much pressure on Sudo, but there wasn't much to go on. Post #90 stood out to me, in the "I won't vote for sd, but I want it known that I would vote for him if he wasn't so close to being lynched" sense. Sudo had also been largely lurking up until that point, letting sd draw fire. #173 is also useful in retrospect. MM's 199 points out that the lack of DeathSauce lynch was probably due to shadowdeath's absence, which I'd say was spot on. Unfortunately MM himself had been lurking and this point, and probably just looked hypocritical. ;) And then shadowdeath was replaced, which I always hate in games, and messes up everyone's read temporarily. Garung stepped up to the plate though and gave it a good try... but that self-vote at LYLO should have set off alarm bells for the townies. When someone votes themselves (or anyone for that matter) in lynch-or-lose and no one dies, it almost always means that either the voter or target is scum. In this case, you had nearly a 100% chance of being right.

I also find it's scummy to place your mafia partner right smack in the middle of The List™; then you neither clear nor implicate them if you happen to get lynched. Sudo did this several times with shadowdeath, who really was lurking hardcore and deserved to be lynched, but I suspect he didn't want to off his only partner on D1. D2 he waffles between leee and sd, waiting for someone to place a vote... and then waffles on what he thinks of the replacement, Garung (which is natural, as I mentioned above, but scummy in this case, probably). Probably waiting to see if someone would jump and vote out of frustration, so he and his newly energized partner could speedlynch.
