You seem to have figured this out to some extent, but if you do literally the opposite of everything Performer suggested to you pregame, you'll do decently as scum.

i do a similar chart thing as scum but it's not really useful for figuring out who to nightkill because if someone's competent, their reads will change in response to the flip, and if they're not competent they're not getting nightkilled anyway. it's good for during the daytime figuring out which wagons are easily viable and which are viable with a stretch and also good for figuring out if the person you wanted to kill anyway, if they had any reads that point at somebody else.

oh, the reason smiles was force-replaced, it wasn't anything alignment indicative; i just was secretive about it to set a precedent that "no comment" doesn't neccessarily mean "something alignment indicative happened," because before this game the only time I had to force replace people was when they spoiled their alignments to each other by mistake, but Smiles was an alt of banned user and he was in a newbie slot from the beginning which isn't allowed; if you're on an alt you can only replace in. So his ban was extended by quite a bit.

House was also banned and won't be allowed to play in the newbie queue again or IC in the future.

I think also you two were talking at cross-purposes a bit at times. It seemed like Drixx thought you wanted a complete and polished reads list with strong, confident reads on all 8 players whereas I think even one or two reads would've been okay? I think it's okay to have tiers like "town enough for now", "town enough for day 1", "i'll look at them in more detail when they've posted more", "i don't even know", "i hate everything this person's posted but i don't know if that makes them scum or not", "scum i guess."

I think if we're honest with ourselves our readslists would look more like that except we know that you don't get people lynched by saying "i think there is a slightly higher than 25% chance that this person is scum, like maybe 29.7% I guess, maybe a little lower i don't know. sheep me to victory!"

It's ideal to have reads on as many players as you can but in larger games there might be 20 or more players on day 1 and realistically most of them aren't going to make much of an impression either way; it's perfectly fine to focus on a subset of players, maybe 2-3 and just work on having a strong read on those few players before branching out, even in a game of this size.

Here, i'll start

5. Make lists. Take all the players in the game, and make a list of them with your thoughts. Use the words “town, scum, gut, null, leaning,” and other mysterious words. Do around one per day, then fake like you forget you ever made it.

Go through the players one at a time and try to figure out how you'd be reading them if you were town and slot them into your reads list accordingly. Your buddy will naturally look a little scummier to you than they do to the townies just because you already know the answer so try to compensate for that a little bit; look at how the town is responding to your buddy and if most of them are townreading your buddy then it's okay to townread them too. Your other reads should be your own, but it's okay to match your read on your buddy to the thread temperature.

If you don't remember what your fake reads were, ISO yourself and ctrl-f somebody's name and look at how you're talking about them. are you pushing them (scum) or are you trying to work together with them (town)? don't talk about ISOing yourself; people think it's scummy. If you don't understand why someone is reading somebody else in a certain way, ask them! Let yourself be convinced by townies that another townie is scum sometimes. Find some people who are townreading you and who you are townreading and work together with them to get their scumreads lynched.

It's not scummy to be wrong about something; townies are wrong all the time. Scum are the ones that start knowing what everybody's alignment is and scum can be 100% right about their reads if they choose to be. You won't really look bad if someone you're pushing flips town as long as your push on them makes sense and sounds reasonable.

This is something that I fuck up all the time.
If someone has really confident, believable, but horribly wrong reads, it tends to be one of those blindspots on my scumdar.

I think it's because we've all had those games where everyone we scumread flipped town and we couldn't understand why our other scumreads kept getting nightkilled. For me it was this friends and enemies game i was in last august-october. i scumread everyone who wanted to know why my mason buddies and i were townreading each other because i thought they were mason hunting. they were all town. so we see someone else having a game like that and we get sympathetic.

6. During RVS, you should simply VOTE: Performer
I think this will help put any skepticism of us being teamed, on hold for a bit of time. If you do end up voting me, just naked-post that in RVS though - do NOT add anything else in your post. Later on people may look at that and pressure me for not analyzing you for naked-voting me, which I normally do as town.

Voting your buddy in RVS is one of those things that's so widely considered a scumtell in the newbie queue that most experienced players warn their newbie buddy NOT to vote them in RVS just so that they won't have to deal with it. as such it's not really a scumtell unless both newbies are scum and even then it's not that strong of a tell, but if you don't want to fend off pressure after one of your flips for distancing in RVS it's better to just not vote your buddy in RVS, especially if you're new.

I am really sorry it took me so long to get to this; real life has been terrible.

I think you did a really good job of being active and engaged. You were interacting with everybody and scumhunting everybody and I thought you did a good job of being transparent with your thoughts and looking town. You had very early correct scumreads on both Zyf and Performer. You did let go of your Zyf read but I don't blame you; he did exceptionally well for his first time especially considering that his scumbuddy wasn't doing anything to help him. I don't know if I would've caught Zyf either if I were playing.

There were things I noticed about him because I was the mod and I already knew the answers, like the way he was flitting back and forth between the Gyrlander and performer wagons, how he really really wanted to lynch Gyrlander and really wanted to look like he wanted to lynch performer, and he did ultimately come down on the side of Performer but he spent so many pages going back and forth hoping he could get Gyrlander instead that it kind of stopped being town indecisiveness and became something more but I don't know if I would've seen it if I were playing either, maybe only in retrospect after I saw Performer's flip.

You did a good job of wagon driving to get Performer lynched.

On page 17, you told zyf to just just hammer and I think it was meaningful that he didn't, but instead went onto dither for another 38 pages before finally hammering ploben. I think this game would've been a lot easier if day 1 hadn't lasted 55 pages because you run into a needle in a haystack problem where there only maybe 2-3 sentences in those 55 pages that are going to unravel the mystery and you have to sift through 213462162 sentences of noise to find those 2-3 sentences and recognise that they're meaningful sentences. It would've been a lot easier for everyone to reread the game and to process what happened on day 1 if there had only been 17 pages to read, not 55.

Activity is good, but in this game there was too much of a good thing. Too much activity is just as bad as too little. I played a game that was in LYLO on page 6 last year and there was hardly anything to analyse at all. It sucked. 15-20 pages is plenty for a newbie game day 1; you don't need more. You reach a point where what you need is a flip and information from that flip and seeing how people react to the flips. There were thirty pages in which it was clear that it was going to be one or the other and nobody else and letting that go on is a bit antitown. This wasn't your fault though because you were wagondriving pretty strongly and you spent a lot of those 30 pages begging someone to put Performer out of his misery, so it was more of an everybody problem. but I'm rambling.

Your read on Gyrlander was good. I am surprised that Gyrlander was a viable wagon at all on day 2 and Zyf pushing that was pretty scummy. Gyrlander was a counterwagon to Performer for over 30 pages and in my experience when both wagons are on scum in a game of this size, they don't stay as counterwagons to each other like that for pages and pages and pages with one person dithering back and forth between them like Zyf was. It's not a stable game state; one of them will be hammered much quicker than happened here or they both will fall apart.


I think in this game people were a little too eager to read Drixx's real life issues as scummy. I think you went after Drixx because everyone else was participating and Drixx was not really sharing reads and was mostly just talking about theory and I think that's a fair reason to go after somebody; I'd say that's a scumtell more often than not in fact -- I know my first time I was a scum IC I had a lot of trouble doing actual scumhunting and kept falling back on IC theory stuff instead because it's so much easier to talk theory than to talk reads. I think where you went wrong though was not letting House catchup and then not waiting for a replacement IC. What House did was shitty and got himself banned from the mafia games for a while and the newbie queue indefinitely but it wasn't alignment indicative.

This is also an area where meta can help; Drixx almost never gives any reads at all on day 1 because he's a cautious player who likes to be sure before he says that he thinks something. I think most players, if they say on page 2 that they're townreading somebody they mean it in a page 2 kind of way: it's not a read they're going to bet the game on, just a feeling that will either pan out or it won't. Drixx likes to wait until it pans out before he says something. He doesn't think it's worth saying something below a certain confidence level, and that's something you'll see across all of his games. You'll know for next time.

I really think you would've figured it out that it was Zyf after the nightkill even without Zyf's mistake; that kind of unexpected nightkill is a prompt to go back and see what you're missing and I think if you'd reread you would've figured it out.

I think also that you did a decent job of pushing people without crossing the line into making the game unfun for them but you'd have to ask your fellow players for feedback on that aspect; it's one of the harder things to judge as a mod.
