Game Rules

General Rules:

0. Read this post very carefully.
1. This is a game. Have fun!
2. Be respectful of your fellow players. Review your posts before you submit them. If you have to wonder "am I being rude here?" then you should rewrite your post.
3. Do not quote any communications between you and me. Doing so will result in a modkill.
4. Do not talk outside of this thread about this game with anyone other than me unless doing so is explicitly allowed per your role PM.
5. If I need to edit one of your posts for any reason,

. For that reason, you may use any solid colors you like, but please steer clear of any kind of rainbow gradient.
6. Do not hesitate to PM me with any questions you have about the game.
7. All general site rules apply to this game.

Game Rules:

1. The only active abilities you have during the day are voting for a lynch and talking. To vote for a lynch
Spoiler: Do This

Code: Select all

vote Untrod Tripod

            or

[vote]Untrod Tripod[/vote]

It is helpful, but not necessary for you to unvote before you change your vote.
2. Lynch is reached at a simple majority.
3. You may vote to not lynch anyone for the day cycle by voting No Lynch.
4. In general, if you have a question for me, please send it via PM. Asking me questions in-thread is fine, but I am far more likely to miss them that way.
5. If a player has not reached lynch threshold by deadline, no lynch will take place that day.

Activity Rules:

1. You must post at least once every 72 hours except in the event of V/LA (explained below). If you do not do so you will receive a prod, after which you will have 24 hours to post in this thread. Prods will be tallied in the first post in this thread. Any player who requires three prods will be force-replaced.
2. If you anticipate that you will be unable to post in the game for a period of time, post in the game what you expect this period to be like so:

Spoiler:
Untrod Tripod wrote:Sorry all, I will be V/LA from 2/22-2/25

3. Each game day will last for a maximum of 21 days.
4. All deadlines will be posted in votecounts and the current deadline will be in the first post of this thread.
5. Each night will last 72 hours. If you fail to submit a night action during that time, no action will be used.

More Rules:

1. Do not use invisible text or tiny font size to hide things.
2. If there is a modkill during the day, the game will continue as before without ending the day.
3. As the mod, I reserve the right to change any of the above ruleset (within reason) at any point. I will tell you all in the thread if the ruleset has been changed and quote the change.

IC and SE Guidelines:

The purpose of the IC and SE players in this game is to help newbies understand how this game is played and how this game is played on this website. If you have any questions about abbreviations, etiquette, mafia, etc. do not hesitate to ask your IC. Newbie games are meant to be educational. That said, remember these things
1. Because roles were assigned randomly, do not assume that your IC or SE players are town. They will provide you will good information, but they are no more likely to be town than any other player in the game.
2. There are no stupid questions! If you are unclear about any mafia-related questions ask your IC in thread. The answer to your mafia-related questions will be helpful to everyone in the game.
3. The tells and advice listed in the wiki will only get you so far. Your IC and SE are vastly more useful resources than the wiki. They will help you use analysis for this particular game.

Setup

This game uses the 2of4 setup. This is a semi-open setup, meaning that there are several options for what this setup could be and these options are known to you. I used random.org to determine both setup and role distribution. I sent proof of randomization to the Newbie Game List Mod.
Spoiler: The six options for this setup:
1. 1 Mafia Goon, 1 Mafia Role Cop, 5 Vanilla Townies, Sane Cop, Doctor.
2. 1 Mafia Goon, 1 Mafia Role Cop, 5 Vanilla Townies, Sane Cop, Jailkeeper.
3. 1 Mafia Goon, 1 Mafia Role Cop, 5 Vanilla Townies, Doctor, Jailkeeper.
4. 1 Mafia Goon, 1 Mafia Role Cop, 6 Vanilla Townies, Sane Cop.
5. 1 Mafia Goon, 1 Mafia Role Cop, 6 Vanilla Townies, Jailkeeper.
6. 1 Mafia Goon, 1 Mafia Role Cop, 6 Vanilla Townies, Doctor.

As promised, my standard IC introductory material, split up into two posts.

Part I of II:

O hai thar. I’m your game’s IC, or “Inexperience Challenged” player. Feel free to call me Yoshi or DY. My behavior in this game is governed by the rules in the wiki article “Being a Good IC.”

What this means: I spend way too much time playing Mafia and am happy to help teach the game here in the hopes that you too will end up spending way too much time playing Mafia.

What this does NOT mean: That I am necessarily the most talented or most experienced player in the game, or that I am automatically town-aligned.

Like all of you, I am playing to my win condition and should be treated as such, but I am also striving to model un-lamerz play for you and am available to answer any questions you have regarding site norms, game theory, etiquette, those sorts of things (except for questions regarding the setup—those should be directed to our moderator). You can trust me to answer any and all such questions honestly, regardless of my alignment. Your SEs (Semi-Experienced players) have also met certain experience requirements, but are not bound by the “Being a Good IC” rules like I am.
On hiatus from any new mafia commitments.

Part II of my stock IC material--below is some general advice for playing in MafiaScum games that have Normal mechanics (such as Newbie games). IMO, these are very good rules of thumb to follow, but at the same time, it’s your world, I just live here.

Don’t be afraid to use your vote as a part of your regular play—your vote is the most powerful scumhunting tool you have. However, times such as casting the final vote for a lynch (a practice known here as “hammering”) may call for caution. “Quickhammering” refers to hammering before the lynchee has a chance to claim or post a final defense, and it is generally quite frowned upon. “Self-hammering” refers to casting the final vote against yourself, and it is arguably a viable tactic as scum (in order to cut off discussion), but it is almost NEVER, EVER okay to self-hammer as town.

It is almost never in the town’s interests to vote “No Lynch,” because you are reducing the town’s chances of lynching scum to zero and thus giving the scum a free night kill. A player who suggests a no-lynch, especially during Day 1, is almost certainly either scum or really bad at Mafia. Or both.

…That being said, there is one exception to the above rule—MyLo (“mislynch and lose”). This differs from “LyLo” (“lynch or lose,” where town must lynch scum or they lose) in that while if the town lynches an innocent, they lose, they can no lynch and not lose. The most common example of MyLo is an endgame with four players left, one of whom is scum.

Publicly claiming your role is done generally as a last resort. If you’re a vote away from being lynched (this is known as being “L-1”) AND an undecided player says they’ll hammer, you should strongly consider claiming. Contrary to popular newbie belief, I don’t think you must claim just because you’re at L-1, or even when you’re at L-1 and a player who has already voted for you demands a claim (because that player cannot hammer you). Wait until a player who hasn’t already voted for you demands a claim.

...That being said, if you’re a VT, NEVER, EVER make a false role claim (ie, claim to be a cop or other power role, or “PR”). The town is predicated on truth; there’s a reason why many, many players have a meta policy of “lynch all liars.” If there is a player who has the PR you claimed, you could well be counter-claimed by that player (who will believe, with justification, that you are scum). You could get lynched anyways, and the real PR risks being night killed by the scum.

Talk! Ask questions, take stands. As a general rule, try to post content at least every day, because the scum aren’t begging to be caught, and lurking townies are doing their faction no favors. A passive town is almost always a losing town.

Read the wiki! Some of the theory is definitely outdated, but it is still a great introduction. But don’t make the newbie mistake of treating the wiki as gospel—again, some of it is outdated.

Be both thick-skinned and civil. Accusations should happen. Personal attacks should not.

If you have to be absent from the game for a few days, that’s okay, just write “V/LA from (date) to (date)” in bold so that you won’t get prodded. “V/LA” stands for “vacation/limited access.”

There is one site feature towards the bottom of the page that I want to point out—the “display posts by user” function, which allows you to read any player in the game in isolation (ISO for short), including the moderator (which you can use to get all of the game’s vote counts if you’re trying to analyze them). The ISO function is your friend.

And try not to post walls o’ text like this post here. Detail is great, but brevity is the soul of wit. Say what you need to say, and sometimes that will be a lot, but just be concise.

Finally, and quite importantly, always be playing to your win condition. Don’t ruin the game for your fellow players.

Thus endeth the introductory post o’ gobbledygook. As ever, feel free to ask me any questions.
On hiatus from any new mafia commitments.

Finally, a few questions for my benefit (this helps me especially from an IC standpoint in offering feedback, but also in just playing the game well)

What timezone are you in? If the deadline becomes a factor, this info is important in ensuring that we avoid a no-lynch.

What experience with playing mafia do you have, either on or off-site?

About how active a player can we expect you to be?

More cowbell?

To answer my own questions:

Pacific Daylight Time (GMT-7)

About 25 completed on-site games. You can find a list of all of them on my wiki page (click on the "wiki" icon at the bottom of my posts), although some of the games were lost to a couple of recent site crashes that zeroed our servers.

I try to post content every day, but it can sometimes be hit and miss. My job entails a certain amount of immediate response to crises and emergencies, so sometimes I have more time to devote to mafia, sometimes less. If I think my job will get in the way for a day or two, I will be sure to let you all know.

And, yes, more cowbell.

I didn't see anything in the ruleset prohibiting it, so I went ahead and tried an RVS (random) vote. UT can feel free not to count it if I infringed upon the sanctity of pregame. :)

Oh well, it can't hurt to VOTE: kalbim, because he starts with a lowercase character.

To answer YT's questions:
  1. I'm currently in CEST = UTC+2.
  2. I started a game of mafia here about 6 months ago but sadly wasn't able to finish it. Else I played some IRC mafia.
  3. I'll try to post regularly (= atleast once a day), but RL always is prioritized.
  4. No cowbell!

That was a very helpful introductory IC post, Yoshi. I am a newbie to this site and to the game of mafia in general, so I spent some time lurking and spectating a few games to learn the rules and such before signing up. Your post helped clarify a couple of things for me that the wiki and spectating other games didn't, so thanks for that.

Now to answer your questions:

1. CDT (GMT -5)
2. None whatsoever. This is my first time ever playing a game.
3. I will try to post at least once a day when I'm not V/LA. Sometimes my work can get demanding. But if that happens, I will let all of you know.
4. Sure

When does the game/Day 1 begin? From what I've seen in other games, the mod usually specifies that Day 1 will start when x number of people have confirmed. Saw nothing of that sort in the mod's posts here.

To answer the questions:

1) PDT (Pacific Daylight Time) which is UTC-7
2) Enough that I could qualify for IC status myself if most of them hadn't been lost in the Great Reset (aka Tigerpocalypse 2012)
3) I try to post at least once a day, time is variable due to my work schedule (retail so it's never a set, reliable time.)

And the game will begin when the mod says it begins. Typically in newbie games this is when 8/9 have confirmed, but every mod has their own system.

A couple dozen games, all but one off-site
I tend to be kinda quiet unless I have something I really want to say, but I will most certainly be checking the thread at least once a day, if not more often.

What experience with playing mafia do you have, either on or off-site?

I've played only 1 game before this, and that resulted in a town win. (Jackal was mod for that game)

About how active a player can we expect you to be?

I try to post about once a day, sometimes more. However, school is over so I expect to post more often than my last game
