General Site Rules:
  • Follow all site rules. Play to your wincon but above all play to have fun. Do not ruin the game for others.
  • If you have something that you need to communicate with me bold your text or I cannot guarantee I will see it.
  • As the MOD I reserve the right to modkill or force-replace players as I see fit.
  • If you feel I have erred send me a PM and let me know.
  • That said, do not bring disagreements with me into the thread. That is what the PM is for. The same goes for disagreements with other players.
  • Do not use invisible or in some way encrypted fonts or typing.

General game rules:
  • I will use the colour #FFAA00. This is my color and only my color. Don't use it.
  • A lynch is reached when a majority of all players (half rounded down plus one) are voting for the same target.
  • If a majority is not reached by the deadline, a No Lynch will occur.
  • You may vote No Lynch in the same way that you vote for a lynch. Once a majority has voted for a no lynch the day immediately ends.
  • Abuse of an infinite no-lynch/no-kill loop will not be tolerated. Do not even contemplate it.
  • Votes must be written in bold as Vote: Player or use the VOTE: Player tag. Votes that are not tagged will not be counted.
  • Votes in quotes, spoiler tags or otherwise hidden will also not be counted.
  • Votes that misspell or have other minor errors will be counted as normal as long as I understand what you are getting at.
  • Unvotes are helpful, but not necessary. Let me know if I make an error in vote counts and I will correct them.
  • I will try and do vote counts often but if you want one just let me know. In general, I will be mainly available evenings (5 PM - 12 PM Pacific) and weekends, so you may not get a quick VC if it's in the middle of the day.
  • As the MOD I will keep communication down to the absolute minimum possible (aside from vote counts and the like). I do not want to influence the game itself – that is for the players to do.
  • Flips will have full role revealed (I will essentially post the PM you received on your flip with the obvious required reductions)

Game Flow:
  • The Game will begin and the thread will be unlocked after 7 players confirm via PM.
  • Please announce if you are going on V/LA. I prefer this announced in thread unless there is a specific reason not to.
  • If you have not posted for 48 hours you will receive a prod. If you do not post within 24 hours of a prod you will be replaced.
  • Three prods will result in being replaced.
  • Day phases will last a maximum of 14 days.
  • Each Night Phase will last 48 hours.
  • You may communicate as normal during the twilight phase until I close the thread but votes/un-votes will not count.
  • Extensions may be granted for replacements or extenuating circumstances.
  • A missed Night Action will result in a No Action.
  • The game will end when all threats to town have been eliminated or that is not possible.
  • If you must replace out, PM me privately and stop posting in thread.

important setup informationNewbie Setup
Matrix6 (as designed by Cogito Ergo Sum):

ABC
1Town JailkeeperVanilla TownieMafia Goon
2Mafia RoleblockerTown CopTown Doctor
3Town 1-shot
Bulletproof
Mafia GoonTown Tracker

Each Newbie Game will be given a setup that incorporates either one row or one column. The remaining six roles will be filled in by mafia goons and vanilla townies appropriately, to create a 2-mafia and 7-town setup.

All Newbie games use the Natural Action Resolution system for determining Night action effects. Roleblocker actions will take precedence over Jailkeeper actions should that apply. The 1-shot Bulletproof is a passive ability that cannot be roleblocked.

basic game and site functionality
  1. Using the "code" tag will let you show something in code to demonstrate, see below
  2. Voting is done by using the vote tags:

  3. Unvoting is done by using the unvote tags:
    Code: Select all
    [unvote]mhsmith0[/unvote]
gets you UNVOTE: mhsmith0, or you can simply vote someone else
  4. As a reminder, Discussion of Ongoing Mafia Games is Not Allowed. This includes discussion ongoing games here or this game elsewhere.
  5. It is not an official rule, but as a courtesy, please do not use the spoiler tags, but instead the spoiler=tag. This is because phones cannot read spoiler tag.

You can do this by going to User Control Panel, then Profile, then "Edit Avatar", and you can upload a picture or gif that will go along with your user name when you post.
  7. If you have any questions about basic rules, or the newbie setup, feel free to ask them in thread or PM me directly.

Mod note: Since I track votes in excel, I usually provide vote counts with links in them (didn't this time since it's late night and it takes a bit of time to setup). It's a bit unusual compared to most mods, but I consider it a nice service for players. Sometimes I'll phone/ipad post a VC or the like and you won't get links, but usually you will.

With 9 alive it takes 5 to lynch!

Actually, I like the Gamma Emerald wagon(for reasons other than the fact that it's a page 1 wagon, that is). His enthusiastic tone seems forced.

@Pep: I like early pressure wagons. I think it's a great way to kickstart the game and get the ball rolling, as well as teasing reactions out of people. What about you?

Hi, I’m Accountant, your friendly neighbourhood Inexperience-Challenged player, or IC. This means that I have a few games under my belt, so I know the ins and outs of mafia and can show you the ropes. For those of you who hate reading long rants, or have read a similar post already, check out the link:
A Beginner’s Guide to Being Awesome At Mafia
Anyway, as the IC, it’s my job to teach you theory concepts, which means I will never lie about theory questions. Ever.
Before we start the game proper, I’d like to cover a few key concepts.

Hammering, Lynching and L-1
When the number of votes on a player exceeds half the number of players for that game, that player is lynched instantly and the Day ends. For example, we have 9 players. If that means the hammer is 5, so if there were to be 5 votes on someone, that player would be lynched. Do not recklessly hammer, especially early in the game, or you’ll risk accidentally lynching town members and cutting short discussion time.
The concept of L-X is used to indicate how many votes a player is to hammer. L-1 means 1 vote to hammer, L-2 means 2 votes to hammer and so forth. So for this game, if someone were to get 4 votes, they would be at L-1. When you place the vote that puts someone at L-1(for example, if someone has 3 votes and you’re putting the 4th vote down, with a hammer of 5), you should usually announce it with a statement like “He’s at L-1”, so people don’t accidentally hammer. Even more importantly, it means that mafia can’t hammer a town member and then claim ignorance the next day.
If someone is at L-1 and you want to hammer him, you should usually state “intent to hammer”, which means “I want to lynch you”. When you do this, you can also ask for a role claim. That way, if the player is a power role being mislynched, he can claim before you place the hammering vote, and thus save himself.

LyLo
LyLo is the shortened form of a phrase which means “lynch or lose”. The simplest form of LyLo is 3 players, 2 of whom are vanilla townies and the last being a mafia goon. Then, it’s easy to see that if they do not lynch, the mafia goon will kill one of them at night, stalemating the lynch the next day, and killing the last town member on Night 2 – although the mod will usually recognize this and end the game early instead of dragging it out.
When town is in LyLo, it’s important not to carelessly vote like you would on any other day, because of the potential for a mafia coordinated hammer(a “quickhammer”, happening before anyone else can react). Let’s say we have LyLo with 3 Vanilla Townies and 2 Mafia Goons. One of the vanilla townie carelessly puts his vote on another VT. This allows the two mafia goons to instantly rush in and simultaneously vote that VT, bringing his vote count to 3 in a game of 5 players, which is a hammer and loss for the town.
It’s good practice to try to recognize LyLo situations when you see them, but in Newbie games a more experienced player will usually point out that it’s LyLo and caution people from recklessly voting. Learning how to deal with LyLo is a very important part of playing mafia, and it comes up more often than you might think.

RVS
We are currently in the RVS, or Random Voting Stage. As none of us has any idea who is mafia(well, except the mafia members themselves, but they’re hardly going to admit it), we’re mostly poking around and slinging votes like hot curry at a food fight, trying to provoke reactions, start a discussion and basically probe around to try and determine player’s alignments.
As it is the Random Voting Stage, it’s common for players to vote for very silly reasons, such as “your avatar is ugly” or “your username has too many numbers in it”. Don’t worry, they don’t have a grudge against you or anything. It’s just part of RVS. Without RVS, it would be a lot harder to get the game moving.

Conclusion
Thank you for joining this newbie game, and I hope that all of us will have fun playing, win or lose. If you have any questions at all, feel free to ask me. I’m an IC, so it’s my job to be active and respond to questions from newer players. I live in Singapore, which makes my timezone GMT+8, so don’t be surprised if I answer in the middle of the night or appear to be inactive at high noon(I’m probably sleeping).

Have fun and good luck!

Hey, I'm from video mafia and have played a very little bit of forum mafia on Teamliquid. So yeah, I'm not a complete amateur but I guess we'll see how this goes.

I currently think that gamma emerald and accountant are lightly townie. No scum reads at the moment.

Gamma Emerald: Very weak fluffy read. I just personally feel like if I were scum, I would be reluctant to be the first poster of the game... especially with a vote. Even if it's "RVS"

Accountant: I liked that our IC decided that reads were more important to give out than the general IC post that I've seen in other threads. Made it feel like accountant really felt the need to say something that they couldn't ignore. I feel like an IC post is more likely to be townread (even though this isn't something that should be read for at all) just because it makes people feel comfortable with the IC but to post a scumread before trying to get on peoples' good side seems like town.

I think mewtaph is lightly townie too after a reread. I think that the way he addressed charloux sounded like he was potentially pushing scum on char, but wasn't really too accusatory and instead, felt more inquisitive. I also feel like I threw in random vocabulary words that could potentially be synonyms for the words that I meant in the last sentence but was too lazy to really check the precise definition.
