[SETUP] Sliding Scale Mafia

Post Post #0 (ISO) » Sat Apr 20, 2019 11:16 am

Post by TemporalLich »

This setup is based on Jingle's feedback to remove the Levelers from Leveler Mafia (my March Challenge submission).

Sliding Scale Mafia is a semi-open setup where pregame voting determines roughly how many PRs are in the setup. The Mafia can collude of course.

The intended effect of this setup is to encourage the Mafia to pick low or high power level, with the more townsided options being medium and special.

Sliding Scale Mafia
13 players

3 Mafia

10 Town

During the setup phase, Townies and Mafia receive PMs of their alignment and must confirm with the choice of whether to slide up or not. The Mafia may privately communicate during the setup phase. The main thread won't be open during the setup phase.

After the setup phase, roles are randomized between the Townies and Mafia and then sent out. Then Day 1 starts as normal.

Three or less slide ups indicate
low power level
. All Mafiosi are Goons. 1 Townie is a Tracker, the rest are VTs.

4-6 slide ups indicate
medium power level
. One Mafioso is a Role Cop, the other two are Goons. 1 Townie is a Tracker, a different Townie is a Jailkeeper, the rest are VTs.

7-9 slide ups indicate
special power level
. One Mafioso is a Roleblocker, the other two are Goons. 1 Townie is a Tracker, a different Townie is a Neighborizer, the rest are VTs.

At least 10 slide ups indicate
high power level
. The Mafia roles are Role Cop, Roleblocker, and Goon. 1 Townie is a Tracker, a different Townie is a Jailkeeper, yet another different Townie is a Neighborizer, the rest are VTs.

Mafia have multitasking and a factional nightkill, and may privately communicate at any time.

The Neighborhood has daytalk.

Mafia Roleblocker
takes precedence over
Town Jailkeeper
.

I think all of those are weak. You could add a named or informed (what powerlevel it is) town to each of them and be better I think.

High power level is probably the best for town. I'm not sure if that means that it will always show up though. (If all town realize that it's the best for town they can force it, but I'm not sure they will.)

I assume every town player will just choose to slide up.

To fix the setup being scumsided overall, the informed (of the chosen power level, does not flip with that info) townie seems like a good idea.

To fix high power level being townsided (especially since the neighborhood can nab the informed townie), the Neighborizer would need to be replaced with something that doesn't synergize with the other town PRs in high power level. I'm thinking Mailman or Friendly Neighbor may work.

Or just switch Special and High.

If the town choosing all the same means that you get a scumsided setup, you actually have an interesting choice at the beginning of whether or not to up the power.

The Neighborizer would still benefit the town if the Informed Townie got into the neighborhood. If this is a special concern I'd have to go with replacing the Neighborizer.

Oh, I'm not saying that special or high is bad by itself, I'm saying that high is better for town than special, so every townie should choose to up power, which means you should get the same setup (high) every time.

I think you should intentionally set this up so town’s best choices go in the order D > A > B > C so town are incentivized to pick the choice that leans toward D but if they all do it they give scum the most scumsided setup

That was my original suggestion too.

have it be

mildly scumsided
mildly townsided
mildly townsided
mildly scumsided

That way you actually have an interesting shot at each setup.

Sliding Scale Mafia v1.1
13 players

3 Mafia

10 Town

During the setup phase, Townies and Mafia receive PMs of their alignment and must confirm with the choice of whether to slide up or not. The Mafia may privately communicate during the setup phase. The main thread won't be open during the setup phase.

. The Mafia roles are Role Cop, Roleblocker, and Goon. The Town roles are Tracker, Jailkeeper, Neighborizer, and Informed Townie. The other townies are VTs.

At least 10 slide ups indicate
special power level
. One Mafioso is a Roleblocker, the other two are Goons. 1 Townie is a Tracker, a different Townie is a Neighborizer, yet another different Townie is an Informed Townie, the rest are VTs.

The Informed Townie is informed with the power level that has been chosen (e.g. "You know that the chosen power level is
special
"). The Informed Townie does not flip with the chosen power level.

Mafia have multitasking and a factional nightkill, and may privately communicate at any time.

The Neighborhood has daytalk.

Mafia Roleblocker
takes precedence over
Town Jailkeeper
.

Spoiler: All Possible Setups
Low Power Level

3 Mafia Goons

1 Town Tracker

1 Informed Townie

8 Vanilla Townies

Medium Power Level

1 Mafia Role Cop

2 Mafia Goons

1 Town Tracker

1 Town Jailkeeper

1 Informed Townie

7 Vanilla Townies

High Power Level

1 Mafia Role Cop

1 Mafia Roleblocker

1 Mafia Goon

1 Town Tracker

1 Town Neighborizer

1 Informed Townie

6 Vanilla Townies

Special Power Level

1 Mafia Roleblocker

2 Mafia Goons

1 Town Tracker

1 Town Neighborizer

1 Informed Townie

7 Vanilla Townies

Hopefully this is closer to the intention of the setups in the middle of the sliding scale being more townsided than the ends, it's more like the original Leveler Mafia with special (or B) being "At least 10 slide ups" and high (or AB) being "7-9 slide ups".

But my thought is

Definitely scumsided
Definitely townsided
Slightly townsided
Slightly scumsided

I think it makes for an interesting level of reading into people’s personalities to figure out if their pick was because they were town wanting to take risks or scum (though this would probably only actually matter for like one slot every other game in practice)...
Still I think it’s interesting
