The roles are NOT distributed at random. Instead, each player gets 3 points at the start of the game, who each must spend them on another player.

Then two pairs of players are selected at random by the following distribution: Each pair of players has a weight 1 plus any points spent by a player in the pair on the other player. If the pairs overlap, reselect both pairs until they no longer overlap. Randomly select one pair to be the Mafia Goons, and the other pair to be the Masons. Further select another pair with the same distribution, and reroll until it is neither the Mafia pair nor the Mason pair (It can be VT/VT, VT/Mafia, VT/Mason, or Mafia/Mason).

In other words, a player is more likely to be in a PT with someone they spent points on, whichever PT it is.

After the setup, the distribution grid is published, and the game proceeds as normal.

Many variations can be made to the setup phase. The number of points can be altered: fewer points means that the desired pairs are less likely to be chosen, while more points may make the grid provide too much information.
