{ROUND 08 TEAM CHALLENGE}

Hanabi

fireworkz

RulesFor this round's challenge, you'll be playing two 3-player games of Hanabi with your team, aiming for the highest total score between both games. No one on your team can play in more than 1 game, unless you have less than 6 members.

Hanabi is a cooperative game, in which players do not compete against one another, but aim for a common goal. They take the parts of master pyrotechnicians, who have accidentally mixed up the powders, wicks, and rockets of a major firework display. The display is about to start, so there is something of a panic! The team must work together to ensure the display is not a disaster.

The goal is to build all 5 fireworks (white, red, blue, yellow, and green) by building sets of each colour in correct numerical order (1, 2, 3, 4, 5).

At the start of the game, the 50-card deck is shuffled and 5 cards are dealt to each player in 3-player games. The contents of the deck are as follows:
  • 3 cards of each color valued at 1
  • 2 cards of each color valued at 2
  • 2 cards of each color valued at 3
  • 2 cards of each color valued at 4
  • 1 card of each color valued at 5
You will not be able to see the cards you are dealt. Instead, you will only see the hands of both of your teammates.

The turn order is randomized. On each turn, a player takes one, and exactly one, of the following actions:
1) Give a clue.
2) Discard a card.
3) Play a card.

1) Give a clue.

Your team starts with 8 clue counters. To perform this action, the player must remove a clue counter. They can then give a clue to one of the other players about the cards they hold.

Two types of clues are allowed:
  • A clue about one, and only one, colour (Ex. "Your second card is blue." or, "Your third and fourth cards are white.") You must list all cards of that colour in your clue.
  • A clue about one, and only one, value (Ex. "Your first card is a '5' card." or "Your first and third cards are '1's.") You must list all cards of that value in your clue.
If there are no clue counters left, you can not give a clue for your action.

2) Discard a card.

Performing this action allows you to gain back a clue counter. You can choose any of your 5 cards to discard, and it will be revealed to everyone. Then, you'll draw a new card from the deck to replace that card. (Note: If you say "discard my card #4", the card you draw will become the new card #4 in your hand.) You cannot discard a card if your team currently has all 8 clue counters already.

3) Play a card.

The player takes a card from their hand and places it face-up in front of them. We then check to see if it is a valid play.
  • To be valid, the card must either be a '1' card of a color that has not been played yet, or be one value higher than the previous valid card played in that color.
  • If you play a card that has already been played, or play a card that doesn't fit anywhere (ex. playing a Yellow 4 when there are only a Yellow 1 and Yellow 2 on the board), your team receives a strike. 3 strikes and the game ends.
Whether the play was valid or not, you then draw another card from the deck to replace the card you played.

If you correctly play a '5' card, your team gains a clue counter, unless you already have 8, in which case this bonus is ignored.

End of the game

A game of Hanabi can end in one of three ways.
  • The players accumulate 3 strikes, immediately ending the game.
  • The players complete all 5 coloured sets before the deck runs out of cards, getting a perfect score of 25 points.
  • A player draws the final card from the deck. Once this happens, all players receive one final turn, including the player who drew the last card. No cards are drawn if someone discards or plays a card.
Your score is totaled by counting the cards that were correctly played during the game. The scores for both games will be added together to make your team's final score. The team with the highest score wins, with ties being broken by who had the best single-game score, followed by which team accumulated the fewest strikes, followed by the team that finished their games the fastest.

Both of your games will take place live, with each player's turn having a 5-minute deadline. Failure to submit an action in that window results in a random card being discarded.

You have
96 hours
to find a time to complete both of your games. Good luck.
