If you're willing and able to talk with a group of people for an extended period of time, and you're willing to learn a little bit about the setup/strategy of the game before it starts, then you should be alright. It's tough to play well in a first game, but that first game will also usually be an indicator of whether the game is for you or not. And it's not unheard of for first-time players to win, either.

Spectating is also an option if you want to see what a game is like without committing to playing one.
