  • Currently, games will have staggered starts according to supply and demand.

Players

  • On signups: games have their own separate threads. This thread is not for signups or for individual games. Most games use a private messaging-based application process.
  • Most games do not accept pre-ins. If any do, I will note that in the queue. If you are interested in an upcoming game in the queue, please PM the moderator(s) of that game about it. Most moderators will agree to notify you when the game enters signups.
  • Casting decisions are made by game moderators. I am not involved in their selections of who to include in their games if they get more applicants than needed, and what system they use to do this is their prerogative.

Spreadsheet tracking and ranking players currently active in Large Social games

Moderators

  • This queue is for Survivor and other Mish Mash games like it. In general, said games take several months to complete, involve 12 or more players, and require a substantial time commitment from players. The primary mechanic of such games is social interaction between players. They are often anonymous and use an offsite forum for this purpose, but do not have to be. If you are unsure whether a game you would like to run falls under the rules of this queue, please send me a PM.
  • If you would like to run a game, please be aware that there are some guidelines as to who may run a Survivor game, specifically. As a bare minimum, you must have played Survivor on this site before. First-time moderators must have one or more co-moderators, and would be wise to choose an experienced moderator but do not have to.
  • Moderators with a history of flaking must also have co-moderators (I will be the judge of this).
  • Given the time burden imposed by running these games, all moderators are advised to have at least one co-moderator, but at this time this is not required.
  • If you would like to change the positions of games within the queue, please contact the moderators in question and inform me of the change once everyone has agreed.

Review System

  • Reviews are a fully optional, but highly advised, process. Through this system, game mods can get an experienced player or moderator who will not be playing to review their game for flaws. Reviewers do not have authority over setups, but are present to provide guidance and to help you, the moderator, maximize your design.
  • I assure you, nearly every game ever run here has had flaws; no matter how wonderful your design is, it will benefit from another set of eyes. If you are interested in this, please inform me, and I can set you up with someone or do it myself.
  • Alternatively, if you know of someone who would like to review, you are welcome to use other channels.
  • Please do not publicly announce who your reviewers are for anonymous games.
  • If mods are interested in this, I would be willing to add "review status" to queue items.

As an aside, this post is not currently intended to be exhaustive. If you feel anything is missing from it, as this is still essentially under construction, please notify me to help improve our system. Thank you.

Mafiascum Large Social Game Newbie Guide: What You Should Probably Know!

There are some things about these games that may not be immediately clear to someone just thinking about getting into them for the first time. The purpose of this post is to give new players a bit of baseline and background to help them assimilate into the social game culture a bit more smoothly, have some idea what they're getting themselves into given that it is not necessarily apparent, and ultimately help new players to compete with veterans.

I. Involvement

You will have the most fun in these games if you are willing to commit a lot of time to them. Part of the fun comes from working hard at something and investing yourself in it. People talk to each other a lot. In general, these are called social games for a reason; the primary gameplay consists not in the minigames, but in the socializing. If you do not like socializing, you will not like this. If you do, it may well be the greatest thing you've ever found on the internet.

II. Homework

By no means do you have to do this, but you may feel better prepared if you do a bit of reading before your first game to get a handle on how these things work. From the Survivor wiki page, you can find pages for many of our more recent games (the ones at the bottom of the table – you'll want to start near the bottom) and on each of those pages you can find a link to the board on which it took place. These are what you'll want to read. You can see what types of games you might expect for challenges, and read confessionals to see how experienced players think. Even a quick skim through one or two recent games can be immensely helpful, and anything you learn here aside from the mechanics of the particular game is just as applicable to similar games, such as Big Brother.

III. What to Expect in Your First Game

The beginning of the game can be a very critical time. It's not uncommon for alliances to form very quickly, and certainly you can get a jumpstart on your connections by being online at the very beginning of the game. At the start, it's important to appear active. If your teammates perceive that you are not around, you are very likely to be the first boot. The more you can be around here, the better. Just signing on and making a post to say you're present can do a world of good, because if you are inactive long enough, the players may start to assume you are the first vote, which can be hard to recover from even if you later show up and become more active. Mods often start looking to replace players who haven't showed up within the first 24 hours. Also, the beginning of the game is often accompanied by a flurry of activity, with private messages flying about everywhere. It's important to be as involved in private messaging as possible. In general, it's a good idea to try to put in effort with those who are putting in effort with you -- if someone sends you a long message and you reply with a short one, they are likely to assume you are not interested in them.

IV. Non-anonymous Games

Please be aware that you will need AIM/Skype for these (but also that we don't do them very often).

V. Undying Adoration

We really like having new people. We might even go out of our way to be nice to you! Come play, what's the worst that could happen?

Ah, right. I'll stick you above Crazy and PI, since you had asked for a reservation in the old thread.

Since this is a thing now, I'd like to tentatively reserve a spot for a non-anonymous challenge-based game along the lines of Pokeocalypse for sometime this summer. It won't require as much time from players, so it should be fine running at the same time as Arkham or whatever Survivor that's running at the time. If I remember correctly, I started up Pokeocalypse around the time Game of Thrones began last year.

Well, does it need a queue slot or doesn't it? :P

I think we should probably discuss this tomorrow or something, and look back at how the first one panned out.

PokeOcalypse ended up being more social than I thought it was going to be. It could have just been because I was going out of my way to be as antisocial as possible though...

If this is anything like that, there shouldn't be too much trouble with it going on at the same time as a Survivor, just as long as any live challenges are far away from important events in whatever other game is happening at the time.

Posted: Tue Feb 17, 2015 5:16 pm
by Cephrir
Well, good luck scheduling that to run together. Survivor games don't run according to schedules even if you want them to.

Posted: Tue Feb 17, 2015 5:19 pm
by PrivateI
I didn't feel as though Pokeocalypse was really social at all. I don't think I talked to more than five players over the course of the game, and I made it to F4. (Which is not to my credit. xD.)

Like KA said, so long as the game is planned out with whoever is running the other game at the time, it should work well!

PEdit: Not a strict scheduling, I don't think, just consistent communication going on between the Pokeocalypse mods and the other game's mods.

Well, I'm mostly referring to Sky Pillar's shipwreck, which was posted half an hour before a live challenge was set to start in Kingdom Clash. I can't actually think of another time that has actually been a problem.

So you're saying that the most important ability this time won't be how well you can play Flappy Bird?

Also, I just looked back at the thread. Nice Table of Contents.
