Twelve Janggi

TWIE
vs.
Kdowns

Another favorite game from The Genius, today's Fortress is Twelve Janggi. Players will face off today, where the winner will return to the game and can choose to mutiny or return to their own team. Twelve Janggi is a variant of Chess, in which only 12 spaces are available between the two players. This variant is also called Dobotsu Shogi as developed by Madoka Kitao. We will be conducting this Fortress live. Please complete the following doodle to determine your availability within the next 24 hours. This Fortress will be completed in the forum and should take no more than 1-2 hrs.

In Twelve Janggi, each player starts with 4 pieces. The objective of the game is to either capture the opponent's king or advance your king to the other edge of the board. The playing board has 3 columns and 4 rows and each piece will start in their starting positions. The three spaces in the row closest to a player is their territory.

The four different pieces that each player starts with in the game are the General, Minister, King, and Pawn.

Image
  • General (Begins on the Right) - It can move along any row or column (forward, backward, left, right)
  • Minister (Begins on the Left) - It can move along a diagonal (forward left, forward right, backward left, backward right)
  • King (Begins in the Center) - It can move one space either along any row or column or one space diagonally. If you capture the Opponent's King, you will win. You may also win if your own King gets to your Opponent's territory and survives one turn in that territory.
  • Pawn (Begins one space Forward) - It can only move one space forward. However, if the Man is able to get to the Opponent's territory, it will become a Feudal Lord.
  • Feudal Lord - It can move in any direction except diagonally backward. As such it may go forward, backward, left, right, diagonally forward left, diagonally forward right). If captured, it will revert to a Pawn.

When the game begins, the starting player may move one square with whichever piece. The following player may then take their move. When a piece is captured by an Opponent, it will move into the Opponent's Captive Bank and can be dropped back into the game as a future turn as their own piece. However, Captive pieces may not be dropped into an occupied square or the opponent's territory. When you capture a Feudal Lord and use it as your own Captive, it will be used as a Pawn instead. Please note that the graphic below is viewing it from the referee's side. Each player should see three columns and four rows from their own viewpoint.

To begin the game, the player whose team performed better in the last Challenge will be able to select going First or Second. Once the order has been selected, players will have 2 minutes per turn to move. If a player does not move within the 2 minutes, they will forfeit their turn and their Opponent may go again. We will be using the code tag to draw the board. Players are expected to demonstrate their moves using the code tag on the forum. As such, one player will be viewing the board upside-down and should remember to make moves accordingly. One player will be using capital letters, and the other will be using lower-case letters.

If a player makes an incorrect/illegal move, they are allowed to rescind the order and make the corrected move as long as it is within the 2 minutes. If a player fails to make a legal move within 2 minutes, a moderator will notify the player of the illegal move, and the player will have 1 minute within notification to make a legal move. If the player fails to make a corrected legal move within that 1 minute, they will forfeit the turn and their opponent may make their next move. It is advised for players to have a moderator on Skype during the Fortress to have the opportunity to ask questions about moves if confused. Please notify the moderators of questions in advance of the Fortress.

To make the game a bit easier to visualize, we'll use this spreadsheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... sp=sharing

TWIE, since Yellow did better in Biohazard you choose who goes first. From this point on, you can not use outside sources or consult with other players before you move.
