The Internet is a beautiful thing. Everybody wants to surf the Internet freely, right? Well, unluckily there are Viruses hiding everywhere just waiting to steal or destroy important data, cause harm to your computer, or use your hardware for their own purposes. The only solution is to create Webs of Trust, networks of people who trust each other and who know (or hope) the others won't try to infect your computer. The principle is simple: whoever is trusted by someone you trust, must be trustworthy.

This game takes place in two places simultaneously:
1. The World Wide Web. (The game thread)
2. The Web's of Trust. (Quicktopics)

1. The World Wide Web

In the main thread, everybody can discuss openly with everybody else.
At any time during the game you can
TRUST: Player X
. Trust is transitive, i.e. if you trust player X and player X trusts player Y, then you automatically trust player Y. If two players (e.g. X,Y) trust each other, a quicktopic will be created in which both of them may talk. Every player who is trusted by X (or equivalently, by Y) will be able to read, but not to write in that quicktopic. If a player trusted by X (or Y) trusts X (or equivalently Y), he/she will be able to post too, i.e. he/she will be added to the Web of Trust.
N.B.:
You
cannot Untrust
someone. Once you trust someone, you trust them.

2. The Web's of Trust.

As soon as someone trusts a Player X, I will open a quicktopic in which only he/she can post. Player X will be allowed to read it (I will send them the link).
In each Web of Trust everyone who is trusted may read and everyone who is trusted
and
trusts the others may post. As soon as a Web of Trust reaches 5 Players trusting each other, one of two things happen:
a) If there is at least one Virus in it, the Webs of Trust collapse and the all the quicktopics get closed. Every Trust will be reset.
b) If there is no Virus in it, the Internet Users win and the Viruses lose.
As soon as the Webs of Trust collapse for the fourth time, the Viruses win.
An existing Web of Trust can not be shut down in any way (except, of course, if it collapses).



EDIT (25.10.2010):
i) If two or more Webs of Trust would merge to form a new Web of Trust with 6 players in, then the players who were in the larger (in case of tie, the one who reached that size first) of the two groups decide on one player of the other group (by secret vote) to be excluded from the Web of Trust.
ii) If two or more Webs of Trust would merge to form a new Web of Trust with 7 players in, then the players in the two larger groups will decide (by secret vote) on one player outside of their group to be excluded from the Web of Trust.
iii) If two or more Webs of Trust would merge to form a new Web of Trust whith all 8 players in, no exclusion will take place and the Web of Trust will collapse.

The game starts with 8 sets, a (different) player in each set.
Two sets (say A and B) will be united if and only if a member from set A trusts a member from set B
and
a member from set B trusts a member from set A.
If a member from set A trusts a member from set B (but not necessarily the other way), then the whole set B will be able to read (but not necessarily post in) A's quicktopic.
of course this is true also in the case of one-player sets.
for sake of simplicity (and so that no content is lost) I will leave all 8 quicktopics open (even if two sets merge), so that a set (Web of Trust) of N persons will have N quicktopics at their disposal. Of course they do not need to post in all of them, they can e.g choose one and continue in that one.

no. If person A trusts person B, then B will be able to read (but not write) in person A's QT. A won't see B's QT. You can see the quicktopic of people who trust you, but you may write only in Quicktopics of people who trust you and who you trust. If you trust someone, but they don't trust you, you won't get anything out of it.
If C trusts B and B trusts A,C,D then:
A,B,D will be trusted by C
A,B,D will therefore be able to read C's quicktopic, but only B will be able to write, since he is the only one who trusts C
A,C,D are trusted by B, therefore A,C,D will be able to read B's quicktopic, but only C will be able to write, since he is the only one who trusts B.
B and C will form a Web of Trust, since they trust each other.

I had to make an EDIT in the rules, as there were some cases left undecided:

sorry to have let you waiting.
here my basic thoughts:

first, I expected much more scumhunting or at least townhunting from towns side in the first two phases. you basically started trusting randomly and ended the day quite randomly. I was a little disappointed by towns play, but I can understand that the game got a little uninteresting later on. maybe scumhunting early (with proxy-votes or similar) could have helped that.
second I'd like to talk a little about balance:
I calculated, that the probability for a successful WoT in the first four phases, assuming random webs is 36,45%
I thought that town could make up for that difference by scumhunting, aided by the logical helps from the exclusions/inclusions in the WoT's. I was wrong. first, I didn't consider that scum has a great power of "pushing" themselves into a WoT. As we saw in the beginning, mykonian and Wingless trusted early and basically stopped discussion easily. While it has to be said that they played well, it has to be considered.
Therefore I think a 45% town win with random play should be better, since there is comparatively more discussive power in scum's hands.
Also, the whole WoT - QT mechanic didn't come into game at all, I think the mechanic is to empty for now.

I am now working on a second version of a similar game, but I will try to:
1. make the game more balanced
2. use the WoT - WT mechanics more and encourage QT-talk
3. add some few sensible power roles. (of course here, since there are no deaths, I will have to be a little careful not to overpower the town.)

I don't know yet how many players the setup will be for, but I suspect it will be around 8 again and definitely not more than 10 (since people don't die, the game would drag with too much people.)
I will of course accept pre-ins.

I hope you enjoyed it despite the flaws the game contained and I hope to see you in Web of Trust 2
