Spoiler: Total aside, Mafia game design rant
I think it's dawning on me that this setup is actually kinda... normal.
And I'm helping someone else balance a theme game right now and it's like--they just wanna kinda make a fairly normal role madness closed setup with light theming too.
I just get so damn wrapped up in the games I make, where I put tons and tons of effort into public mechanics and unique private roles and theming that it comes as bit of a slap in the face when I realize my design sensibilities are not reflective of what mostly gets run even in the same 'genre' of game on this site. It's not that this kind of theme game is bad--in fact, it's probably far closer to the sort of mafia game that most people are traditional used to playing and want to play, but still. Is a theme just a coat of paint to slap onto your regular ole closed setup? I don't want it to be. Part of me hopes that there's something more to this setup, but I also rationalize it's likely just like most the others. Again, not a bad thing, just not
my
thing, which can surprise me, because after running my things for the last few months, it's easy to go "Oh, this is what a theme game is, it's my thing!" but that's not true at all and in a way that kinda makes me feel bummed out. Like, I know people enjoy my games and like to play my games but I kinda wanna play my games too, y'know? And when push comes to shove, it's like, people don't really want to make my games or even conceptualize of theme games the way I do and while, at first, maybe I should feel shiny and novel and unique and smugly contrarian for doing something different, it's really that difference that I crave, and having to realize the world isn't like that and theme games aren't like that--it makes me feel really 'other' and small and as though what I do is dumb and contrary. Then I feel unique and novel and shiny, but, like, gaudily and cheaply so? I don't know. It bums me out. Man.

I could really go for some pizza right now.

Varsoon the Fantasy Gerblin powers exist so I'm kinda hoping those offer something exciting as well.
One day I will make an exciting mafia game with exciting mechanics :]

Bro you designed a setup that had the second SK endgame 5 townies. That's some bullshit. I lost every one of your setups to scum because your mechanics and roles defy all logic. Like all five games I played we lost to scum due to some BS iirc. I enjoyed the journey but not the destination.

It's nice to have predictable setups. Look at GoT large theme mafia that just ended. It was an awesome game, with simple roles. It built up throughout, suspense grew, and ended with a bang.

You should create a topic in mafia discussion and talk about what you learned in setup design and make a god damn game that I can win in as town.

Your setups are incredibly unbalanced to the point I want to laugh just at how your evil mind thinks it's acceptable to do some of the things you do. A huge criticism of your games is the losing side always feels like the mod fucked them. You should make games where the focus is on who is the best at lying, or the best at finding the lies. Forget about everything else because if you miss the core point of the game then it will always end up creating animosity and resentment at not being dealt a fair hand.

Varsoon you need to make games where the mod feels invisible. Where you don't need to give too many reminders, rewrite too many rules, answer too many questions, and when you do it's clear cut and dir

Play some Mastin games. They are complicated enough for you, have complex public and non-public mechanics, and manage to make it worth struggling to win for, with a ton of payoff at the end that reward your emotional investment instead of making you feel like the mod screwed you over royally.

Suzane :

- very careful play which can come from eaither town or scum.
- didn't really impcat the game in any directions even though she is active
- her reads feel genuine and consistant and I can follow their pov imo
- still waiting to see what she meant from that last post about whit knighting

I certainly want to see more from her but null slight town pile

pim :

- seems there was a misunderstanding between he and varsoon that you jumped right at it though I'm not really sure
- pim is responding to pints calmly and consitant though his points are not really strong overall.

He is practically still meh - neither way for me.

I hope you take the feedback in stride Varsoon, I get obsessed with playing mafia just like you get with designing setups. You know how it crushes you when your setup misfires, that's how I feel too, maybe even worse. We pour our heart and soul into this. Of course it's personal.

The game was awsome, flavor awsome, though it wasn't varsoon type of games. Balance argument that game wasn't balanced as town were way more powerful but in general it was way more satisfying than Bloodborne. Saga, flavor wise was really awesome but it was crippled cause of that modkill (or maybe balance issues - shrugs)

I made a really complicated game (maybe even more than the above 3) named "code geass" btw which I think was balanced - town won the game in a really close fight for instance -

I love complicated games but they have to be 100% clear setup wise and winnable for everyone. which I think saga was that way too.
