How do you become a backup mod? Is experience necessarily required and does it pay well? What is the benefits package like?

Generally, to be a backup mod you need to satisfy the modding requirements. I think Large backups need to have actually modded a large and Newbie backups HAVE to have modded a newbie. Other than that, nah, go nuts.

Basically you're a spectator with access to all PM's who's expected to post VCs and help with action resolution if necessary. Sometimes you're called on to weigh in on mod decisions. Sometimes you do absolutely nothing over the course of a game. All depends on who you're backing up. (For example, I try hard to make sure my backups are unnecessary, but some people really appreciate help with frequent VCs and such.)

Does that mean I can backup mod a theme or normal even if I have never modded a game onsite?
The (purported) altruistic part of me would like to help with a game and grant it more reliable votecounts and flavor posts sometimes. But I deliberately never mod because I don't think it would mean as much to me as it would to someone else to see a certain setup run, so I don't want to take away anyone's spot in a queue.

Hello!

I'm going to be running Chain of Command (not in signups yet) which has essentially 2 layers of roles, so I'd really like to have someone who can double check that I'm sending all the correct information to the correct people, for peace of mind.

I'll be fine to run the game otherwise (VCs, Day/Night start posts, sending PMs etc.), I just need you to keep an eye on the Mod PT where I'll be posting my draft flips and PMs to check that everything looks alright.

I'm looking for someone to backup mod for Pokemon Ruby Mafia. I will be traveling out of the country from July 20th to 29th would like to fully hand the game off to a backup over that time. I don't expect to need assistance beyond those dates. Backup must meet the requirements to moderate in the Mini Theme queue.

I have surgery tomorrow and will be in the hospital for at least two to three days, and will need someone to manage votecounts during that time. Looking for a backup mod for my upcoming 13-player Mini Normal. I have three planned periods of V/LA over the next 1.5 months, each only two days long, so I'm looking for someone who can post a few vote counts during the brief periods I'll be away. Also looking if possible for a game integrity consultant for the same game who will know the setup but not the role distribution. If necessary, I will consult this person about any game integrity issues that may arise. I'm fine with having these two roles performed by separate people or to have a backup mod who agrees not to read certain spoiler tags in the Mod thread (unless something happens to me and they need to take over moderation duties permanently, of course).
