Newbie Game Queue (Players and Mods)

Welcome to the Newbie Game Queue!

List Moderator: PenguinPower

Newbie Game Specific Information:Newbie games allow both new and seasoned Mafia players to more seamlessly transition into playing elsewhere onsite. We recommend all new users start here, even if they have previous Mafia experience.

To join a game, please reply to this thread with something along the lines of "/in for next". You'll be added to the queue usually within a day or two, and your game will start as soon as it's full. Upcoming games will be full when there is at least three Semi-Experienced (SE) player and four Newbie players available. More SEs may be used in any given game to relieve a backlog on those specific areas of the Queue, or in an effort to fill a game quicker.

Here are some helpful links (a lot of them from our helpful wiki):

Types of Players and Their RequirementsThere are two types of players in a Newbie Game; New Players and Semi-Experienced (SE) players.

For purposes of Player Game Limits:
  • A
    finished
game is one in which you are out of the game (by elimination or night kill) but the game is still being played by others.
  • A
    completed
game is a game in which a winning side has been declared and the game is over.
Taking on too many Newbie games at one time, getting overloaded, and replacing out of those games can get you banned from the Newbie Queue!

You may join the queue as a New Player if:
  • This is your first game on site.
  • You have not completed 5 Newbie games from the beginning (replacing in after Day 1 does not count towards this).
  • Brand new players may either play a Newbie game from scratch or replace into an existing Newbie game for your first game.
  • Once you have played five Newbie games from scratch you are no longer allowed to play Newbie games (except as a replacement) until you play a game outside The Road to Rome, thereby qualifying as an SE player. See the SE section below for more information.
You may join the queue as an SE if:
  • You have completed 4 games onsite, with at least one of them being outside of the Road to Rome.
  • Players qualified to be a SE may play in as many games as they think they can handle.
  • Replacing out of a game does not count as a completed game for the sake of SE status, outside of exceptional circumstances.
Replacements:
  • If you want to replace into a specific game you should send a PM directly to the Mod instead of posting here.
  • Unless specified, all requested replacements are newbie replacements.
  • Moderators are welcome to replace any slot with a player of a greater level of site experience at their discretion if they are unable to fill the slot with a player of the same level (SEs may replace Newbies, for example. Newbies may NOT replace into a SE spot). Moderators should take into consideration the overall game state when making this decision.
  • Please notify the ListMod if you notice a player replace out who then signs up to play another Newbie game within the next 14 days. Replacing due to boredom or any other similarly selfish reason is NOT acceptable and the offender will be suspended from placement into the Queue for a period of two weeks.
IF YOU ARE SIGNING UP AS AN ALT ACCOUNT:

Established players starting Alt accounts (an account different from their primary account, usually used as a means to play against their established meta)
may not
/in as a Newbie since they'd be taking a spot away from a true site Newbie. Additionally, since the Alt account itself doesn't qualify, you may not function as SEs under the Alt account either, even if the player behind the account does qualify for one of these positions.

The ONLY way in which a new Alt account may play in a Newbie game is to offer to replace into existing games. Once the account has met the requirements of a SE, you may then /in as a SE player as normal. You may always instead use your primary account to function as a SE if you qualify.

Hydras are sometimes considered a type of alt account, but for the purposes of keeping Newbie Games as normal as possible, they are not allowed in Newbie Games. Hydra accounts will be force-replaced immediately if discovered playing Newbie Games.

Any player is, of course, welcome to join other Game Queues as they feel ready.

Moderators
Moderator Requirements:
  • You may only be in the modding queue twice at a time.
  • Potential moderators must have one completed game on this site as a Moderator, and first-time Newbie moderators must have a back-up moderator. See the Modding Requirements wiki article for exact details.
  • Potential moderators MUST visit the Newbie_Game#Moderators wiki page to see what is required of Newbie game Mods.
  • Potential moderators must include links to their completed games
when they make the request to be added to the modding rotation
. If you have more than two games as a Mod, please link the latest two.
  • For purposes of quantifying eligible completed games, three completed micro games will count as one completed game in another queue. Blitz games do not count as experience.

Returning Users
Since the e-mail has gone out and there may be returning users who have not played in a while, users who would feel more comfortable playing as a newer player may /in as a new player to be added to the queue regardless of the number of games they have previously played.

Returning users who feel comfortable playing as a SE may, as long as they meet the criteria, still /in as an SE.

Please specify:

/in newbie
or
/in SE

when you sign-up, and welcome back!

Introduction and Tips
Thanks to Irrelephant11 and others for their contributions to these tips.

Here are some helpful links (a lot of them from our helpful wiki):

-> The Glossary
-> Commonly Used Abbreviations
-> The Newbie Guide
-> Articles on How to Play Well (be sure to check the dates these were written/updated, as good advice changes over time)

Key Concepts and Tips

Activity

Try to check in at least once a day.
Besides the activity requirements listed in the moderator's original post, it's just necessary for a fun and healthy game that everyone
plays
. If you post very rarely, or only post a little bit at a time, you may get scumread for lurking. Even if you are not scumread for it, what's the fun in playing a game where multiple people are hardly participating?

Site Meta

Meta is the description of how people on Mafiascum like to play mafia. Things can be different on other online mafia sites, or if you play IRL, so it's good to know what's expected of you on this site. These aren't "rules", per se, but if you don't follow these guidelines it is likely things will go poorly for you on MS. Some examples are...

Random Voting Stage (RVS)

Games on MafiaScum almost always begin with what we call the Random Voting Stage (RVS). At this point in the game, we are in a low information game state (except the mafia, which know everyone’s alignment). As a way to provoke reaction, start a discussion, and try to determine alignment, people will usually vote for non-serious reasons. As the discussion progresses, we will eventually get the game moving and progress out of RVS.

Voting, E-x, and Hammers

E-x is a way to convey how far away a player is away from elimination. For example, you should always announce that you are putting someone at E-1 (1 vote away from an elimination) so that someone doesn’t come along and accidentally vote for that player's elimination. This also prevents Mafia-aligned players from coming along and placing the final vote to eliminate (“hammer”) and claiming ignorance about doing so. You may also see E-2 and E-3 (2 votes away from elimination and 3 votes away from elimination, respectively).

Before you hammer a player, state your intent to hammer (usually done in bold) and ask the player to claim their role. This is done to prevent power roles from being eliminated, and can sometimes get Mafia-aligned players to be caught (via counter claiming). It's best to then allow other players to react and discuss the claim before hammering.

Claiming Your Role

It is almost always best to not claim your role unless you are at E-1 and have been asked to claim as part of an “intent to hammer.” This is because, as a town power role (“PR”), if you out prematurely, you are likely to be night-killed (“NK’d”). As a Vanilla Townie (“VT”), claiming early helps the mafia team narrow down the setup and possible PR candidates. An exception to this would be if a mafia player claimed your role, claiming early to counter the false claim (“CC”) would out the mafia player, and would be a benefit to the town.

Do not fake claim a power role as town!
While it may help you avoid getting eliminated, you might cause a real PR to out themselves by counterclaiming - then the mafia will know who the PR is, and you will probably get eliminated for lying to town. Feel free to fake a claim as scum, though, if you think it would help.

ELo

ELo is the shortened representation of “Eliminate or Lose.” ELo in the Newbie Queue is when there are 3 remaining players, 2 of which are town and 1 is mafia; or when there are 5 remaining players, 3 of which are town and 2 are mafia. It is important in these situations that the town aligned players do not carelessly vote like is done during RVS or early days, as the mafia player(s) can organize and instantly provide the necessary votes to eliminate (“quickhammer”) and win the game.

Conclusion

Mafia is hard!
As town, it can be hard to figure things out, and stressful when people think you're scum.
That's okay!
Just share your thoughts on who you think is scum as they come to you, and don't be afraid to change your mind. As scum, it can be hard to lie convincingly, and stressful when people think you're scum. Don't let that scare you! Try to think of what you would post if you were town, and don't be afraid to "change your mind".

This is a game.
Have fun!

Please note, there have been a few changes. So make sure to read through the OP.

Changes:
  1. Newer Players are allowed to play 3 completed games from scratch before having to qualify as an SE, instead of being restricted to 2 games. (7/30/2017)
  2. 2d3 is the new Newbie Setup (1/2/2018)
  3. Deadlines have been updated to 10 days for Day 1, and 7 days for all further Day phases. Prodding now occurs after 36 hours of inactivity. (7/2/2018)
  4. Replacement requirements for Newbie slots have been updated to allow Moderator discretion depending on the current game state. (7/11/2018)
  5. IC role eliminated and replaced with an additional SE slot. (2/6/2019)
  6. Increased the number of Newbie games newer players may play from 3 to 5. Increased the number of total completed games require to /in as an SE from 3 to 4. Requirement that at least one has to be from outside RtR remains the same. (4/11/2019)
  7. NewD3 replaces 2d3 as the Newbie Setup (8/12/2019)
If further changes are implemented this post will be updated.

This is a newbie slot and may be replaced by anyone except a newbie currently playing and alive in his/her first newbie game. Newbies will get preferences for newbie slots for the first 24 hours.

Please PM me if you are interested
It is now night 1. Not 24 hours since the announcement, so newbies still have priority.

Newbie 1808 needs a replacement for WhaleBarnicle. Day 2, 37 pages. This is a newbie slot, so players not currently playing their first MS Newbie game are eligible to replace. Priority will be given to true newbies for the first 24 hours. Deadline is paused until this is filled. Additional time for a catch-up will be added once a replacement is found!

PM me if you'd like to join this game!

Sweet, I've immortalized myself on a page one.

Also, how long is the IC queue? Because I might want to give that a shot, but after a month or 2 when I have a bit more time

Usually pretty short meaning you get into one of the earlier games to run soon--the main thing contributing to speed from my understanding is how many newbies we get signing up to play.
