I hate barbarians, they always take my trade routes after I forget to protect them. I could look inside for the fault, but clearly it's because of the barbarians.

I will complain without end about trade routes being plundered until the devs add the ability to assign military escorts to them. They're a civilian unit like builders and settlers, why isn't this already a thing.

With actual Trader units, akin to caravans or cargo trucks/ships, I disagree. Elbirn is right; they should function in all ways like other civilians.

I mean...you sort of can if you're prepared to manually move a military unit onto the tile that the trader is going to move to after you hit end turn, provided you memorize where it's going and how many spaces trader units move per turn (I assume 2 tiles) and then also do this for every single trade route you have

Or maybe just don't send your trade routes through areas of the map that don't have vision on them?
When I do, I don't send them all that far (unless it's via sea) without having an Archer sitting in the 'blind' spot.

The more frustrating thing for me is the tedium of a military victory. It's especially unrealistic that it takes me over 400 years to march a standing army over to the enemy's capital, by which time they have researched superior fighting technology. I tend to build the world's smallest military ever, only having ranged units garrisoned in my towns and an occasional fast-moving unit to clear barbarians if need be.

I just lost one when sending it from my city to the Kongo, there were 4 tiles between our cities. I thought it would be safe.

Protip: keep Boudicca around and you can select her at any time to see where Barbarians are through the Fog of War. That's probably a bug, but, it sure does work! /drunkposting

Update!

I am finished making the setup. I am currently drawing up all of the Role PM's which might take me around an hour, and then I will be drawing up the game thread, which might take me 30 mins to an hour. After that, Role PM's will roll out. I am not busy today so this will definitely happen! I expect Role PM's to be out and everything ready within 2 hours of this post.
