If you like smaller games, try the Micro Queue. For something a little bigger, the Mini Themed queue can be interesting, but the Open or Normal queues are great if something a little more straight forward and transparent is what you want.

I haven't played two newbie games from scratch.
I have barely played one. This doesnt seem like a fair ruling.

Amid the pressure of great events, a general principle gives no help.
You can also pm specific mods to join a replacement queue in ongoing games, and they'd notify you first about an opening if/when it popped up. That's about the mist that can be done to get you in front of the line priority wise.
