Spoilers in dead threads

Post Post #0 (ISO) » Sun Nov 29, 2020 10:22 am

Personally, as a player, I hate when dead threads are left unspoiled, so as a mod I let my dead threads be fully spoiled. I'd love others' thoughts on why they do what they do, and players' thoughts on what they prefer. Furthermore, for mods who don't give spoilers, how do you deal with it when members of the mafia die and want to say their piece in the dead thread?

i thought the thread title was "spiders in the dead thread" and i was so confused

anyway, as a player i prefer unspoiled dead threads. as town, it's fun to read what the rest of the townies were thinking was the solve and whether they'd fared better than me, and as scum it's fun to read how soon were people onto me after they died lol

however, the real question for me is what is going to get the dead players more engaged. i love reading dead threads, and whatever is gonna make the dead players discuss more in a given game's dead thread is the option i'd prefer. obviously this is kinda difficult to know / get right as a mod, so /shrug
I will straight up disregard all reason if you have a PR dream again. You can come back and be like, “I dreamt that Locke is a N2 Bulletproof Multitasking Cop and Self-Targeting Doctor,” and I will go, “Okay, Locke kill it is then.”

Spoilers should always be marked in some way so that those who want to follow along still and scumhunt are able to.

Anything other than yes with spoiler tags is wrong.

Given how long the games are here, un unspoiled chat is pretty much a story without conclusion for the dead players.
I always offer spoiled and unspoiled dead chats.

i'm gonna quote myself here:
ever since RAS attempted unsuccessfully to cheat in my game and succeeded in cheating in multiple other games through the use of spoilers and multiple acounts, i have been more hesitant to give out spoilers. (to be clear – i'm not accusing you of being a potential cheater)

i believe that spectator threads are made more interesting and less toxic through being unspoiled. it is also the case that the knowledge of people's alignment in this ongoing game could influence people's reads in other ongoing games, a situation which i think is undesirable and thus should be kept to a minimum.

it sounds strange to say, but i just think that players (especially scum) have the "right" for people to not know until it's actually revealed. i think that scum victories where people were spoiled are often cheapened by people going "that was so obvious, town played so bad" when they already knew the answer, and that leaving things unspoiled prevents this from happening.

these are just a few of the reasons why i consider it to matter.
i also agree a lot with datisi that player engagement is pretty important. of course, it depends on the playerlist whether they're more engaged still trying to solve after they're dead or whether they're more engaged just watching / agonizing over how things play out when they already know the answer. like i said, nowadays i tend to keep things unspoiled, but often i might spoil things when it gets to lylo, or let the dead thread have their own cop investigation each night or something (which i think is fun and engaging)

The option I prefer was not listed on the poll:
Two separate dead threads, one with spoilers, one without.

Exactly this, but I do really enjoy the sense of still participating in the game that comes with the dead PT cop checks or similar so I voted for that

Probably like

Dead PT NAs giving spoilers gradually > unspoiled > spoiled

sometimes I do really want spoilers (I’ve been NK’d just before I pushed someone, I lost a 1v1 and I’m *sure* the person was scum) but on those occasions i normally PM the mod
"we knew everything... And we knew nothing."

Well not impossible if you are strong willed.

Ok... that is bullshit, even the strong willed players would check as spoiler if it will solve a doubt lol.

yeah I mean, we've caught cheaters in the past. if it's an established player who's never cheated or someone I trust, then id just share full spoilers. if people are gonna risk the perma ban for game interference, thats just sad.

Dead thread access is often given pretty freely to spectators.

sometimes it's fun knowing the full setup and watching all the moving parts position themselves in real time.
sometimes it's fun trying to crack the code backstage with the other spectators. i think this option is better for a larger game, or one that has a lot of spectators.

but ultimately, whichever creates more engagement. now that i think about it, i've liked dead threads where mods have gradually trickled out info throughout the game.
