Calling a Canadian an American is about the same as calling an Irishman/Scotsman English.

Only if you refer to the entirety of the UK as England. Which would be incorrect.

Canada actually resides on a plot of land called America. North America. Ergo, All Canadians are Americans but not all Americans are Canadians.

I fail to see the problem with referring to inhabitants of a geological landmass as inhabitants of a geological landmass.

For example: When someone says "That person looks Asian", one doesn't generally think they're referring to a Russian, Israeli, Syrian, or Saudi Arabian, but they technically could be.

I'm with you on the Russian bit, but Israel? Syria? Saudi Arabia? From all definitions of "Asia" I've seen, it generally starts around Afghanistan/Pakistan.

And just because when someone says "That person looks Asian" they're intending to say "that person has physical characteristics attributed to the lineage of far-eastern geographical locations", doesn't mean they're wrong. Just as all Far-Eastern Nations are Asian but not all Asian Nations are Far-Eastern Nations, All Canadians are Americans but not all Americans are Canadians.

Also there is an underlying sense of "it is horrible to be an American" if it is qualified by being horrible to be called an American if you are not.

Just like it's horrible to be called a racist if you are not. Or horrible to be called a murderer if you are not.

Zoraster, the continent thing was originally stated as just being a technicality. Nobody is saying that it is generally used. It was then pointed out as being wrong which simply isn't true. It's really not a big deal to me personally, but it's not wrong to say anyone in North America or South America is technically American which is all I'm getting at. It's a technicality and I'm fully aware of that.

This only matters in the scope of the argument if China is designated as a greater landmass than the country itself by Taiwan.
