In post 4573, Varsoon wrote:I think that flavoring the lynch mechanic as a 'Liberation' mechanic would reflect this theme pretty well, but in order for that to work right, it'd have to be set up such that when all the scum are lynched/liberated, town loses.
Is this something that could work, mechanically?
Have there been other setups built around AVOIDING lynching the informed minority/scum?
The hilarious thing is that you posted this
while there was a game ongoing that worked like that
. It tore me up, because I couldn't mention it because ongoing game rules.

The game has now ended, though, so feel free to go look at it and/or discuss it. (It's an Open; the setup is called Vote for Town Mafia.)

The setup as linked there is one of the simplest possible versions of the idea, but it would probably work in something more complex. Note that making a faction bigger is a disadvantage for that faction, though, so it's hard to make the numbers work if the town has positive utility power roles.

My first thought was players would design their own post restrictions, and the roles/setup would be based around that.

I am thinking of running a Slenderverse themed mafia, the thing I was wondering is-are you allowed to use names as roles? Also, what are the rules regarding custom role mechanics? I plan on having an...interesting mechanic for one of the factions (SK).

Bastard Setup: Mental Illness Mafia.

Everyone has a role that is a mental illness. Examples of roles:
Paranoid Schizophrenia: player receives a role PM that says "FBI Agent" which looks like a regular cop and works like a paranoid cop. (Delusions of Grandeur)
Narcolepsy: You can't change your vote after the first IRL day of each game day
ADHD: You have to change your vote at least once per IRL day and you can't unvote. Failure to change vote will cause your vote to be moved randomly to a different player.
...

It could probably be made serious, but I haven't put a ton of thought into it.

Overwatch Mafia
Vanillaless, any of the heroes can be scum, so nameclaims are guaranteed safe. Every player has a 1-shot ultimate that can each be used after a certain game day. Lots of day powers. Many are wagon-centric. HP mechanics. No flips on daykills until end of day.

Examples:
Mercy: 200 HP, refreshes at the beginning of each game day
* During the day, can have a heal target, healing at 40 HP per real time day
* 1-shot resurrect a player that has been killed during the day phase
* Night protects up to 250 damage.
* Ultimate: 2 resurrects, available for one use starting on D3

Lucio: 200 HP, refreshes at the beginning of each game day
* Healing Song: heals 20HP per real time day to all players on the same wagon as you
* Night protects up to 100 damage on all players that were on the same wagon as you when the day ended
* Ultimate: Sound Barrier - protect up to 800 damage dealt to all players on the same wagon as you until end of game day. Available D3

Reaper: 250 HP
* 8 shots per game day dealing 30 damage each, self-healing for 5 HP on each hit. Shots must be spread apart by at least 1 hour (You can plan several shots in advance though)
* Wraith form - once/game day become immune to damage for 24 hours.
* Ultimate: Death Blossom - Deal 200 damage to all players on a single wagon. Damage done in 50 damage increments every 6 hours. Available D3

Mei: 250 HP
* Night Roleblock + 20 damage
* Ice wall: Prevent 1000 damage to a wagon for the next 24 hours
* Ultimate: Blizzard - Wagon Roleblock. Available D3

...

Would be a crapton of bookkeeping but would be very interesting.

Mental Illness Mafia seems super cool but also runs a high risk of being mad-un-PC and potentially offending people. So tread carefully I guess.

Overwatch HP mechanics seem to take a lot away from the fundamentals of mafia which is the day phase. Also seems near impossible to balance, with a lot of players doing things with their roles that they don't necessarily intend to.

You could definitely do a role madness game around Overwatch hero abilities, but not like that I think.

I was in a theme game once that had HP mechanics and day powers. But this was like 6 years ago when things were a bit more lax here. I see what you mean though. Even when the idea was swishing around in my head, it didn't really feel like mafia anymore.

Resurrection abilities can definitely work with delayed flips though.

One role that I thought would be fun in a theme game is something like a "phantom" When the player is dead, they can continue to post in the game thread, but not vote. Maybe while dead, they can roleblock too. ("haunting") So they're basically a VT while alive and a voteless roleblocker while dead. You could probably make an entire game around death mechanics.

Phantom powers might be kind of interesting to apply to all players. Then you could add an Exorcist or something that removes dead players from the discussion. Would probably be a mafia role, actually.

The biggest thing about Theme games that a lot of mods don't get is that the game should still be, at its heart, mafia. And that's why Varsoon is so hugely successful at creating his games. He has intricate flavor and mechanics, while also still keeping his games "mafia" at their core.

If you haven't played one of his games, I'd highly suggest you play one, and then you'll see a little bit about what a theme game like that can be.

Speaking of, I have a bunch of theme ideas in my back pocket but no clue what people even want to play.

Megaman Battlenetwork, Dragon's Crown, Legend of 5 Rings, Magic the Gathering, Sacrifice, Sengoku BASARA, Samurai Jack, Mike Tyson Mysteries, Yakuza, Heroes of Might and Magic 3, Gundam: Universal Century, Undertale, the list goes on...

Basically, I just don't know what I want to commit 6+ months to again. :P

To be fair, I've had to have a lot of rules conceits and come up with little rules for myself; like that every game I create should have a 'vanilla' MYLO/LYLO state. I do that so, regardless of mechanics present, players still have to win a game of straightforward mafia with straightforward voting mechanics.

Cheetory6 proposed an awful/great idea where I just mash all those setups into one.

So.
Would anyone actually want to play a game where, each day, players must vote on a new setup to play for the next day/night phase. Each setup swap would completely give people all new role cards and public mechanics, abandoning the old ones?

I won a game like that recently, except the mod chose every setup.

This sounds an awful lot like Storybook mafia, which I really need to finish.
2019 stats: Town WR 76.7%, overall WR 81.667%, 1 scum defeat involving a major mod error in lylo vs 8 scum wins.
