Trying to distance responsibility from your vote.

At the most extreme, it's setting up an objective, transparent set of conditions that will inevitably bring your vote. For example, "If X is killed tonight, we are lynching Y no matter what." Then, if Y flips town, you can say, "Don't blame me! You know why I lynched Y!"

In practice, this rarely happens to this scale, but I'm willing to go after smaller degrees of this. I'm not one of those people who thinks mafia is about how good your logic is, but if I feel I need to argue against the conditions you've stated and it's not about you thinking Y is scum, that's a huge red flag.

Note that this isn't saying, 'Policy lynching is bad.' Shit, I love policy lynching. The kind of thing I'm against is people voting because some previously stated condition has been met - when you can't attack them for making that vote, because they already said what conditions would make them vote. At the end of the day, if you're not accountable for your votes, it's going to be very hard to catch you if you're scum and I don't want to deal with that.

Can't find who said it, but someone in one of my early games made the comment that if all else fails, vote for the lowest post count. Remains disturbingly good advice.

A bit broad, as "having to hold two contradictory ideas in mind" is implied by "being scum in a game of Mafia". If I can find anything that indicates that someone doesn't actually believe what they write, that's the best tell to me. Lying, obviously. Contradicting themselves, sometimes. Finding a tell really significant in one case but not another with no obvious change of context. Apparently forgetting what they `thought' earlier. Stuff like that.

The problem with things like "lurking" is that some players do it no matter alignment. Some players do it more as town! But a townie should rarely be saying something they don't actually believe (maybe if they're a PR hiding information or something).
