Roles Section

Post Post #0 (ISO) » Thu Sep 12, 2002 8:49 am

I'd like to add to the role section over the next week (or longer), so if you know of any roles (particularly if you created them in a game you moderated) that are not included, post here. Please include the role name and a brief description (spell check and proofread and all that, please, it saves me a lot of time), as well as what page it belongs on.

Also, if you have used a role in a game under a different name (Werewolf instead of Mafia, for example), let me know that too.

And anything else you see that needs to be added to or updated or whatever.

I like my (modified) laundry attendant. Checks a persons clothes for blood stains. If the person ever killed anyone, they have blood in their clothes. I thought about having the butcher always have bloodstains, but felt that would be unbalancing in my game.

This is part of what I currently have in my files as roles that have been done before. Some info given.

P000 - Cop (Sane)
P001 - Cop (Insane)
P002 - Cop (Paranoid)
P003 - Cop (Naïve)
P004 - Cop (Random)
P005 - Cop (Retired)
P006 - Cop (Corrupt)
P007 - Cop (Methodical) - see Improbable Role
P008 - Cop (Sibling)
P009 - Forensics Detective - two kinds, investigates crime scenes and receives list of who could've done the dirty deed or investigates living person and finds out who has targeted them.
P010 - Deputy - receives info of dead Cop
P011 - Commissioner - trains one target per night in Cop abilities (random type,) alternatively discovers sanity of Cop

M000 - Godfather
M001 - Mafia Scum
M002 - Assassin - the mith version
M003 - Day Assassin - the DP version
M004 - Mafia Cop - for gang wars
M005 - Mafia Spy - the activate version
M006 - Mafia Infiltrator - Brunchma's Spy, joins recruiters, etc.
M007 - Traitor - searches for Mafia
M008 - Poisoner - used in maf39? poisons a target, the target dies if voted for
M009 - Blind Mafia - used in blind Mafia games, not particularly successful both in 38 and 46
M010 - Mafia Sibling - see Cop sibling
M011 - Mafia Lawyer - see Improbable Role, I'm in favor of Mafia getting abilities.
M012 - Saboteur - brunchmafia
M013 - Goon - replacement Saboteur

G000 - Gang Leader - a brunchma invention, the Godfather of a gang, Gangs can attempt two kills per night but only have a 50% chance at each because of their amateur tactics, I don't like the idea much, but maybe with refinement.
G001 - Gang Member

C000 - Cult Leader - the brunchma type, I really really like this role, recruits Culties and they all die if he dies.
C001 - Cult Member
C002 - Clairvoyant - Saboteur for the Cult
C003 - Psychic Friend - replacement Clairvoyant
C004 - Cult (CENSORED) - censored because this type of Cult appears in my next normal Mafia.

X000 - Serial Killer - haHA!
X001 - Arsonist - 50% SK
X002 - Evil Townie - wins if an evil group gets majority.
X003 - Opportunist - switches sides if Town lynches two townies in a row, in games with Cult can go there too.
X004 - Coward - used in an early DP game, automatically unvotes Mafia when Mafia are lynched except in lynch-or-lose situations, not sure how much I like this
X005 - Mad Scientist - yay animals! I like this role in combo with Doc too.
X006 - L33t Haxx0r - see minigame, communicates with SK at night, I like the random algorithm.
X007 - Face Dancer - my standard term for DPs ability thief. Dune. awesome role. IS sucks.
X008 - Necromancer - yay!
X009 - Torturer - variant of poisoner, except working for Town/neutral.
X010 - Igor - my standard for replacement Mad Scientist, if we ever use one.
X011 - Nightmare - appears in a DP game a while ago, anyone who investigates/targets it dies, limit of one per night. my idea is to give it a night kill on nights when no one targets it, thus turning it into a weaker SK.

T000 - Townsperson - yay!
T001 - Doctor
T002 - Nurse - standard for replacement Doc
T003 - Mason (Standard) - know each other
T004 - Mason (Verbose) - don't know each other, share characteristics (no Ks in verbose, colours in IR)
T005 - Mason Leader - knows the Masons in a game with Verbose masons.
T006 - Mason (Bladerunner) - linked to a leader, start dying if leader dies.
T007 - Mayor - power of two votes.
T008 - Priest - no deciding vote in lynching, one protection from night kill
T009 - Saint - when lynched, first on bandwagon also lynched
T010 - War Veteran - 50% chance of surviving night attacks (bulletproof)
T011 - Detective - Cop with percentage chance of getting specific info
T012 - Vigilante - one kill per night
T013 - Hunter - one kill per game
T014 - Vigilante (JDTAY) - sweet role devised by JDTAY, vigilante that gets penalized for killing innocents.
T015 - Reporter - I dislike this role, broadcasts a target's role to the Town anonymously.
T016 - Inventor - yay!
T017 - FBI Agent - tries to find specific targets (SK, et. al.)
T018 - Caterer - DP, yay!
T019 - Gunsmith - another DP, finds out if target owns gun. I like this one.
T020 - Faith Healer - 50% chance Doc
T021 - CENSORED, in next game.
T022 - Protector - Doc for day as well.
T023 - Brewer - the Town role-blocker. brew!
T024 - Armed Townie - see mini11
T025 - Politician - forces vote a certain way.
T026 - Actor - can only cast deciding vote
T027 - Neighborhood Watch - work thousands of different ways depending on mod, yay!
T028 - Village Idiot - votes randomly, not much fun
T029 - Preacher - see brunchma, works well opposite a cult leader
T030 - Mason (Cursed) - see Egyptologists and Mummy, Mafia 48
T031 - Weatherman - changes night to day/day to night once per game at any time in a strict day night cycle game
T032 - Elder - combo doc/cop

Heh, I have a handful of variant roles that I'm going to use in my Normal Mafia. I'll list them after I get my shot (which I'm really anxious to do, by the way) I've spent a LOT of time working on balance and done a lot of thought exercises. Only 8 more games to go ;) At the current pace of 4 games in 5 months, it's not even a year away. *sigh*

I think I have some good roles prepared.

Hm. I had a role named "Coward" in one of my games. The coward would choose a house to hide in at night. If that person (where he's hiding) is attacked by the mafia, the coward dies as well. If the mafia attack the coward directly, he survives (because he's not home). Moreover, the coward finds out if the person he's hiding at is doing anything during the night (though not the type of the activity).

Prostitute (as seen in Neo's game) is combo Brewer/Detective (blocks someone's role and has a % chance of learning it.)

Vindictive SK (Gollum in LotR) gets a list of people he can kill each night. Personally I think this is a very interesting mechanic (the FOSing and voting producing a night effect.)

I didn't tell the whole truth about the Armed Townies in mini game 11, because 1. it didn't make a difference in how the game played out, and 2. I had planned to use the role again in a future game. But I didn't realize there was a War Veteran role that was identical to what I described.

So anyway. In addition to having a 50% chance of surviving night attacks, if the Armed Townie survives, he has a 50% chance of learning the attacker's identity, and if he succeeds there, he has a 50% chance of killing the attacker.

I liked the idea at first, but I think it would be better if it weren't so determinate on chance. Maybe if he only has one bullet. He kills his first attacker, learns his second attacker's identity, but succumbs to a third attacker. That would only be usable in a game with multiple killers, I suppose. If more than one person attacks him on any night, he fails.

I'd like to see the BURGLAR added. I like that one.

Other roles that I have introduced include

PRIEST cannot cast deciding vote
ACTOR can only vote if it is the deciding vote
(not particularly useful ones these two, won't use them again)

COMMUTER is out of town (and safe) every other night

I have used Firemeboys MAYOR as well: has the power of execution during the day (once).

X011 was Antrax's "Paranoid". IS played it and managed to kill a cop and the mafia spy on the first night or something.

One I liked was DP's Gunsmith, who could investigate people and got a response based on whether they were armed or not. It's a good way to give someone a 50% chance of success in their investigations without introducing a random factor.

Oh yeah. Anyone who targetted the paranoid at night was caught in one of the many traps surrounding his house. The paranoid was aware of this ability.

DP, Antrax, and mole, I know the three of you have modded quite a few games, and DP's in particular have a wide variety of roles. Would it be possible for each of you to go through your games and make a list of roles and what they do for each? You don't have to write a summary for how the game actually went or anything, though that would be nice too. :) I'm just going to work on getting a complete list of all roles the GL, brunchma, and mafiascum have used, along with what games they appeared with and what they do and such.

I'm planning to do just that as soon as my current game finishes. (Twin Peaks mafia, of course, will have quite unique roles, by its nature)

Are you just looking for roles on MafiaScum, or are you interested in roles from elsewhere too? I think I have two or three novel-ish roles in BrunchMafia6:

Werewolf: does not know that they are the wolf, has a 50:50 chance of killing every night, with a victim chosen at random by me.
Chance of biting a villager if lynched in the first three game days (50%, 20%, 10%), turning that villager into a wolf.
If targeted by a killing group would kill one member in retribution.
Could not be recruited.
Bit of a wild card, but fun; could work as much for the town as against it.

Weak Willed Townie: had to vote as instructed by cult (although did not know where instructions came from) untill their nominated 'controller' died. they could change vote as often as they liked, so long as, by deadline, they obeyed their instructions.

Scourge of the Undead: made one attempt at a kill per night, 1 in 3 chance of 'making a mistake' (i.e killing a human role, or not killing an undead role - recruiters and killers in my game)

I don't believe I've had many new roles per se, just odd dynamics between them. But I'll look through mine.

I do remember a Psychic type (forget what I called it maybe clairvoyant) who could check one person and they will be given a name that is connected to them/part of their group. If they're not part of a group a townie's name is returned.

I think I've decided to put any roles that involve any random percentages in a separate section. They just make the game very different.

But anyway, AF, if you'd like to look through the other brunchma games to get a complete list of roles used... :)

This is what I can recollect so far from my games (will update when I remember more) as roles I think I introduced to this game.

INVESTIGATIVE ROLES

Retired cop: takes over from cop when cop dies. Usually does not get that cop's information.

Armed cop: regular cop with gun; has a 50% chance of killing a mafia who attacks him

Caterer: can deduce from client information whether said client is mafia, cop or something else.

Gunsmith: can deduce whether someone has a gun or not (mafia, police, ..)

Clairvoyant: can see someone's role in detail (with 50% chance)

Forensic scientist: can deduce potential killers from selected corpses (with a 1/3 chance)

Burglar: steals item from selected players every night; gets indication of that players role

SPECIAL MAFIA ROLES

Assassin (DP version): can make a daytime kill once in the game

VARIOUS ROLES

Commuter: is out of town (and invulnerable) every other night

Mayor: vote counts twice

Abilitystealer: takes over ability from selected persons every night

Army veteran: can make one night-time kill during the game

Village idiot: always votes randomly

Priest: can never cast deciding vote for lynching

Actor: can only cast deciding vote for lynching

Neighbourhood watch:
Version 1: can protect people from mafia with 50% chance of success (and 50% chance of dying)
Version 2: can select the house of one player and capture killers on the scene (do not prevent the kill)

Bodyguard: for hire, protects during the night (with a chance of dying instead of the intended victim)

Lawyer: for hire, tries to prevent his client from being lynched. If unsuccessful, he dies as well by suicide

Second-hand bullet-proof vest: 50% chance of surviving mafia attack

Faith healer: doctor with 50% chance of success (cannot heal himself)

Note for he/him, read he/she or him/her.

Well, now that my game is finished (and Twin Peaks has, of course, unique roles), here are the (unique) roles I've used:

  • Paranoid
    - Whoever targets a paranoid at night dies. The paranoid is aware of this. On the town's side. (Alt: doesn't know about this).
  • Polygraph Guy
    - Can check one post each night (from whichever day). The mod then tells him which parts of the post are lies (in the opinion of who posted it) and which are correct (again, in his opinion).
  • Cop's Brother
    - Starts the game as a mason with the cop. Once the cop dies by the hands of the mafia, takes his gun and goes to exact venegence on the mafia (read as: becomes a vigiliante). (Alt: if cop is lynched, becomes SK)
  • Bodyguard
    - like a reverse doc -- protects an individual, if that individual is attacked by the mafia, a mafia member dies at random. (Alt: Also immune to night kills himself)
  • Evil Townie
    - Like a mason, only on the mafia's side. Only know each other, but it's the intention that counts.
  • Opportunist
    - Starts out as a townie. If the town lynches two townies in a row, joins the mafia's ranks. (Alt: two innocents)
  • Coward
    - Targets a player every night. If the mafia target the same player, dies as well. Immune to night kills. Learns whether the player he targeted went out at night or not.
  • Mafia Cop
    - A mafia member who can also investigate to learn the roles of people.

That's about all the unique things I've done, off the top of my head.

Two variants on the Vigilante that I thought up (which as far as I know haven't been used):

Deranged Vigilante: On town's side, but must kill each night.

Berzerker: If he kills an innocent, he becomes deranged until he kills a guilty. May start out normal or deranged.

The closest I've seen to the DV was the Hotel Detective in Vegas Mafia (becomes deranged if the Burglar is killed before being arrested, stops being deranged if he kills the Manager).
