A matter of etiquette

Let's look at the following situation. In the middle of the game, a cop sees an innocent being bandwagoned. He decides to come out (the second cop to do so) and state that he is a cop and that the intended lynch victim is innocent.
The moment he posts this, he realises that he has mixed up the names, and that he did not investigate this player at all. Given the fact that the post has been upthere for just a minute at a moment when there are not many players around, he decides to delete the post. He also informs the mod of what he did by email.

Two questions for debate:
[1] Is this acceptable?
[2] If not, what should the mod do?

Tough. On this board, it would be difficult to figure out that something fishy happened (since the post numbering doesn't exist.) It is good that the person e-mailed the mod.

It's a tough call, but I think that it should not be considered acceptable. (There is no way to know that someone else didn't read it.) I think that the mod should force the cop to come out, but that he need not reveal his investigations if he doesn't wish.

It shouldn't be allowed -- the potential for game degradation is just too much. There is no way of telling whether someone's seen it or not, and that hypothetical someone would have gained information similar to out-of-game conversations had he existed.

Thanks for the feedback. This confirms my own feelings.

I have corrected the situation.

Another game degradation is revealing one's true identity while playing an alias mafia game. Dad, behave :)
