Personally I find aliases very confusing. For some reason it really hinders my ability to follow games, and as a result I've decided against signing up to any alias mafia games.

Amen.

After my :@~£-up in Greifswald mafia, I have decided not to play in any mafia which uses aliases.

I'll like them a lot more when I get new software. :)

Anyway, I agree they are confusing at times, but I like them *~shrug~*

Definitely confusing! I have found that my interest is also lowered because I don't want to bother with looking up the password. There were times when I wanted to say something, but didn't remember the password, so I just didn't bother.

I will probably not play in any new games with aliases.

Part of mafia for me, is figuring out a person's play style. That is, if this person is mafia, they tend to act like this.

Aliases take that aspect of it away from me in most cases.

Some people are just easy to figure out even under an aliases when they act the same as normal...like IS in the invitational.

In otherwords, I'm with the rest of you. :D

the one where you ran around mispelling things and made the whole town sick of it, so they lynched you to get you to stop?

Sounds familiar? :D

I quite like it. Not saying it should be used too much, but if it can be used for some interesting twists the mod might have up his sleeve, I'm all for it. I'm not too good with figuring out people's play styles and such anyway, and I don't see "confusing" as a problem when it comes to Mafia.

I rather (very much actually) dislike it.

I think aliases are usefull. They don't have to be used in every game, but sometimes it can be fun since you don't know who's who. This way, you can't compare play styles from a player with other games they played. It's also fun to try and figure out which player has which alias. And even if you think you figured someone out, you're still not sure (except for DP and IS ;)).

It is quite confusing though. I can't remember who did what since all the names are unknown to me. A good example is Greifswald Mafia on the GL. The names used in that game are hard to remember. I mean, how can you not mix up Albrecht and Lebrecht or Heinrich and Friedrich ;).

In short, I like to play with aliases once in a while for the fun of it. But it's somewhat confusing sometimes and like Jeep said, those damn passwords are a pain in the ass.

Jeep & Cadmium: Which browser are you using? My browser (galeon), you can remember names & passwords, and can have separate accounts on one site, so on GL, I can just select from rm, mjt, and my Salem Mafia account. I'm not sure if that feature made it into recent versions of Netscape, though.

Hey, that's interesting! It would be a lot easier that way.

I use more than one browser. At work, I'm working on a Linux system at the moment. The browser I use there is Konqueror. But X-windows also includes Mozilla and Netscape. My PC at home has Windows as well as Linux on it, so I can always use everything there. Maybe I will try Galeon or figure out how to configure another browser.

Anyway, thnx for the advise :).

The that you don't know who's who doesn't really bother me that much. What does, however, is that you have to sign on as that alias and remember or constantly haev to look up your password. That part is just plain annoying.
Like what Jeep said-

i like aliases, simply because i don't play enough mafia to know everyone's playing styles. accusations of being scum due to A doing this in game 1 when A was scum, and A didn't do this in game 2 where A was townie, so since A did it again in game 3 means A has to be scum always go right over my head. if a person's playing style changes mid-game it's a more valid reason for suspicion, in my opinion. just because someone did something once or multiple times as scum doesn't mean it won't happen if they're a townie, or vice versa.

They make it hard to remember who is who and who it is you're posting to. It also makes it harder to remember who did what and stuff.

Well, I have as of now officially never held an alias without messing up and posting my name in the aliased thread or using the alias instead of my name in another thread.

I would be much happier with Aliases if like mith said, the software was better, and thus would allow me to log out of one of my user names and into another without closing the browser and deleting all my cookies.
To avoid this, I have to log in everytime I come to the board. Not a big deal, but I associate the very small inconvenience with aliases.

Aliases are less annoying on GL, which has spots for UN & PW on each screen, but puts up the last one used, so it is easy to change on one page, without requiring the user to reenter them for the bulk of the posts.

mith, could you look into setting mafiascum up so it works like that?

I have no problem with alias games on the GL. I find logging out and logging back in here very annoying and I really can't remember to do this. If this were fixed I would play alias games here.

As it is, I am resigning the one I am currently in.
