Quickpick

Post Post #0 (ISO) » Wed Feb 12, 2003 11:32 am

Hello again friends and foes!

How about a "quickpick" game. This would be a forum for rapid fire users who would probably visit the site twice per day (making loads of posts in the process we hope).

A moderator would send out the details to players and change to night after 1 and 1/2 days, converting back to day by end of 2nd real time day. The process would continue until then game ends (within 2 weeks or so I should think).

Anyone think that's a terrible idea?

Or a reasonable idea?

Hmm?

Anyone?

Not a well designed poll....

Anyway, I think it would be great, but one of the advantages of a forum like this is that you CAN skip a day of checking in. If you want rapid file, try playing live on IRC... I never have, but I'm interested.

I like the idea of everyone participating multiple times per day...

Ah, speed mafia. We're currently on speed game #7 on Brunchma, and I've been having Evil Thoughts about modding one here. They're very popular, I'd say more so than the long-form games, largely because one doesn't have problems with the game moving too slowly (unless the mod goes AWOL or something).

A 48-hour day/night cycle might be a little short, though. 72 might be a little better.

If you start one, count me in. Ill mod one once I get to grips with how it all works and I pass all the criteria necessary to make me a mod. :)

I'd definitely be up for this. I like the idea of "speed mafia" -- I'm always terribly let down when I check to see that the last post in a game is my own from two hours ago....and then I have this horrible habit of filling the silence with my another of my own posts...

I'd love to be in a constant deadline game; maybe I wouldn't be talking to myself so often!

MeMe, I think that I agree with you there. The deadline game would add a little bit of stress to it all and when you didn't have time to check the messages for a while you would be rewarded with loads of Mafia goodness when you finally did (because everyone else would be posting like hell fire). :D

Worst... Thats a disgraceful idea... You blaggard! Grumble grumble (Or something to that effect)
Bad... I have my doubts buddy...
Average... It could work, I suppose, but it's not my cup of tea.
Good... It would be great, if we could get enough players!
Great... Bring it on! I need more Mafia!

That's not really a lot better because it asking "what do you think" but then the choices are for different questions.

Someone could think:
It would be great, if we could get enough players, but I have my doubts buddy.

What would he choose?

The good choices are really responses to: Would you play this?
The bad choices are really responses to: Can this game be successful?

That's a much better poll (in terms of data collection). Of course it means I should change my answer, which I can't, but...

This is a good idea for people who are tired of games moving too slow, but I doubt that I would play (at least at this time of year) because I might not really have time to check twice a day and keep up with deadlines. OTOH, if there was one like this running in the summer, I might try it because I'd have more opportunities to check the game.

I happen to check this site a lot and post often, but if everyone posted a lot, it can make it hard to have enough time to read it ALL, AND post about it yourself. Do you follow? (the question sounded confusing to myself  )
Ever wonder why that edit button is obnoxiously placed in the center like that? Yeah, that's cause of me.. and trust me, it's better off there.

Yay, I can spoil your idea again!

I already tried a very similar idea, called "realtime mafia". The days and night were real. It was very taxing on the mod, and several people died from inactivity (3, if memory serves). Basically, you can't find 20 people who're online 24/7.

DS, that would be a big problem alright. Perhaps there would have to be very few players so that there wasn't too much to read when you came online. Do you think that would make a difference, DS, or do you think that the player count would be irrelevant?

GOD DAMN IT Antrax!
Can't you just let a guy feel like he's really original for a while? :D

Back to the drawing board...

PS
I'd still like to give it a go, if not at a Real time pace, maybe a Half time pace.

In respose to bob's question anyways- yeah, that probably would be better- just don't forget that this also shortens the game- and being in real-time is espescially faster.

I think part of the reason that this Mafia board is so successful is because people like it the way it is. I think I'll stop trying to think of ways to improve or diversify something that already works perfectly.

It's far from perfect. If you can figure out how to ensure continous participation by all the players, we'd all be eternally grateful to you. And by "all" I mean "I". :)

Monetary incentive?

Or what about (prepare yourself for this cracker of a plan...) Mods voting one person out of the MafiaScum site each week... Like a sort of Mafia for the moderators... They would kick someone off the message board if they disrupted gameplay through non participation... and ... and then people would be too scared to not participate... and.. and...

... Yeah, yeah, that's a terrible idea. God loves a trier.

Sebastian.

You mean the mods get rid of someone each week until there's no one left but them? I'd better start moderating quick. :)
