Well done @ removing best claim award. It was funny and appropriate when maybe a dozen memorable claims might happen in a year, site-wide. Right now site meta already features too much anti-town claiming and gambiting for the hell of it. Anything that can be done to stamp out this trend is A+.

The Best Role Claim award is just way too limiting an award. There's so few instances of situations where a single person could be nominated. 99% of townies shouldn't ever claim anything except their own role PM, and being able to successfully fakeclaim something believable is just general good scum/sk behavior instead of an isolated point that should be rewarded.

But I understand IceGuy's argument and think that maybe we could have a

Best Moment in a Mafia Game

award to highlight particularly good plays or particularly funny or memorable moments.

Also, I really think we should have a

Hall of Fame

. Now that mafiascum.net is 10 years old, those whose join dates are more than 10 years should be eligible for induction (n number of inductees per year or whatever).

Hmm - not sure judging funny moments against good play works? It's even harder to judge than judging which role claim/role use is best. I think I'd limit Best Moment to things like role usage/role claims/other things I can't think of?

I'm in agreement with Faraday and SKrew here. It doesn't make sense to judge them against one another; they're too different.

I strongly disagree with Faraday, SleepyKrew, & quadz08. You guys are monochromatically categorizing potential nominees as either funny or "good play" without really knowing what's going to get nominated. Some moments are going to funny, some are going to be "good plays" and likely most are going to be a mix of "funny" and "good play" because it was a moment in a mafia game that nobody who participated or read it afterwards is going to forget it anytime soon.

Insisting that they be judged separately will mean that most people will throw the nominees into both categories and get annoyed when they don't win either for not being a strong enough nomination when considered separately.

Very rarely have I seen a truly hilarious moment also be a moment of truly good play. For example, in Fate's Destiny Mafia, Spyrex posted an image in-thread that I think literally every player in the game fell of their chairs laughing at. Would I have nominated it for funniest moment? Absolutely. Good play? Hell no. While the categories are not mutually exclusive, the overlap is so small that it makes no sense to group them together.

I'll grant that strategic genius will trump a comedic moment of no legitimate value, but there already is a "Funniest Poster" category for the latter so I'm not too concerned.

The winner of the award will most likely be a great play or a great play that was also very funny. I don't see what the problem is with that.

And SpyreX won "Funniest Poster" exactly for posts like that. If it had been a brilliant post/play/gambit/maneuver/analysis/whatever on top of being funny, shouldn't it have deserved an award by itself in case SpyreX lost out to Thor665?

The problem is that a lot of people (us) want to reward something that's just funny, regardless on if it was good play. A lot of people (us) also want to reward a good play. So the people (we) want two separate awards. Maybe something will win both, that's cool, but not the majority of the time.
