heh, pagetops when I don't expect them. This is in response to Psyche:

Ooh, nice idea, I definitely agree with the concept.
For body of work awards it would be really cool to be able to add a newly completed game to the body of work. Any ideas on that?

And the scraper would know to update the same nom? It might be a different submitter but I suppose the nominee and category tie them together.

i imagine for a given nominee and category that the set of games can be a pool of links shared between nominators

yes, we should. I think 1 or 3 is smart. I don't think there's any reason to stick with my form if you can put together something user friendly that doesn't use it. This way avoids having to scrape as well, right?

To the extent that I understand it, option 1 scrapes the bbcode form, which isn't really a big deal as long as people don't mess with it too much. :)
I've been following along with some other things being done with the same codebase (mod bot, automated page topper, etc), and it's very cool.

oh, and what are we doing about incomplete or poorly formatted forms?
i'm thinking an automated pm warning the user that their nomination is invalid, but a post might be make it more of a teaching moment

I am also going to actually say something, its pretty important.

Post of the Year vs Kodak

I kinda want to point something out about how post of the year is discribed.
Post of the Year

This award is awarded to a person that made a post. But not just any post, this post is important! This is the post...
that on any part of the
non-Mafia/non-Mish Mash part of the site
... had the
biggest impact.
It made you
laugh
. Maybe it made you
cry
. Maybe it just made you
blow air out your nose
.
In any case, this post belongs in a shrine to great forum posts.
First, there are a few things I want to point out (also wow that looks really spooky am i high?)
1st thing - the non-mafia/non-mish mash part of the site
2nd thing - Had the biggest impact.

A good example is our current kodak winner:
It was the video
it was really funny
people liked it

it became apart of site culture.

Thats ultimately what this award is about.
Now this is Kodak
Kodak Moment

This award is awarded to the player or players who were involved in the most memorable event in a
game of mafia
.
Fake claims, funny claims, awesome exchanges, etc
. may all be considered for this award.
The award importance is mafia.
If there was a gamewinning posts or a post that was heavily influencial to the game, it should go here.
Plus, that stuff is not going to win when its going against things that have became apart of site culture. Thats the reason why Reck's video won, its an influence on site culture while the rest of the nominations weren't.
Why are you trying to compete against that level of? You're gonna die dude.

So I am going to just clear up some stuff.
- We're probably going to change up the definition a bit to clearify influence on site culture.
- Context is super important for this awards. They need descriptions and context!
- So I am going to police this a bit more for context.
- While noms from mish mash or mafia games are cool, I'm probably going to be more strict on them, since I want them to into categories where single posts fit in. If its enough to influence site culture, it needs to go to post of the year. If it influences the game and impacts the game but not the site, it goes in kodak moment.

Thats all :]

But yeah if you disagree with this you should let me know, because I am willing to hear ya out.

Hard agree.

One of the main reasons why my nominations were so last minute is that I didn't realize that the deadline--which in literally every single year prior to this year was on the end of January--was so early, until like one week before the deadline.

I thought that I had a whole month, but then had Iess than a wekk…
…During the incredibly busy holidays.

And I am a member of the SSC.
If a member of the SSC wasn't aware of the month-earlier-than-traditionsl deadline, most scummers sure as fuck weren't going to be.

Psyche since I was managing the nominations thread alone for this year, I decided to scrap the spreadsheet and just keep track of everything in thread.
I switched to doing things on hand because its easier with the new formatted thread and there was a lot of garbage that was sent through the google form.

But everything is in thread

For a few awards we have open voting, following the intent of a fan-favorite Game of the Year etc. The SSC and volunteer judges select finalists for those (and other) categories, then debate and select the winners of the rest of the worlds.

Volunteer to be a judge next year :]

The question I'd have on that is what makes Micro special? Isn't it pretty commonplace, where marathon is periodic?

They're a little too periodic and infrequent nowadays. The likelihood any given player viewing the awards played a marathon that year is getting lower, so the award is less relatable.

The category is the same as "best game", and all its contenders are eligible for "best game", but it's meant to give some games that don't "stand a chance" at winning best game their own examination and spotlight and one more award for us to do. I don't mind the idea of doing that, but ideally I think it's best if it's something everyone in the audience was highly likely to have experience with in the past year.

ALL the nominees for best game were large themes (maybe with one rogue in there) this last year, so there are lots of Fourth Graders Only divisions you can make up, it doesn't have to be Micros, and if you think something with a smaller pool is more interesting, as long as the pool doesn't preclude some of the audience systematically I think several things other than Micros are worth considering. Many players prefer to avoid Opens, but most of those capitulate occasionally so best Open could be an option. (Maybe best Mini Open because lots of Large Themes that are actually get nominated, but based on experiencing the character of those games I don't think the distinction between a Mini Open and a Large Theme Open is as arbitrary as it seems). Best Normal could be an option for similar reasons. Best Micro Normal would be cool, the quality of micro normals is often surprisingly high. Best Large Normal is probably the most infrequent type of game you could pick where the audience was highly likely to play one, since 15 people were involved for each one. There are some creative types of categories you could come up with with a narrower pool of nominees also, Best Nailbiter (has to go to 3p LyLo), best game-with-no-replacements, some other stuff I maybe can't think of. I don't think Best Marathon is a great category though.

I'd like to point out that MBoS, a micro, and Vengeful Ghosts, a mini, were both nominated for Best Game.

But, most scummies nominations are indeed for larges with only the occasional mini and very rare micro.

This is a trend across every scummie tho, not just Best Game.

Doesn't mean it's not an issue, mind you, but it is still worth noting.
