Role descriptions

This'll help later for the wiki, but right now I'm trying to get my game analysis database up and running. I need some sort of way to "generalize" roles, at least the majority of them. Here's what I've got so far, off the Wiki and personal experience:

Code: Select all

RoleName	RoleType
Unknown	Unknown
Townie	Vanilla
Cop	Investigative
Doctor	Protective
Mafia Goon	Scum
Serial Killer	Scum
Godfather	Scum
Traitor	Scum
Mason	Associative
Roleblocker	Controller
Vigilante	Killer
Bomb	Killer
Miller	Misleading
Psychopath	Scum
Psychiatrist	Investigative
Arsonist	Scum
Fireman	Protective
Cannibal	Scum
FBI Agent	Investigative
Bodyguard	Protective
Lassie	Investigative
Caterer	Investigative
Deputy/Backup Cop	Investigative
Nurse/Backup Doc	Protective
Mayor (lynch stopper)	Controller
Role Switcher	Controller
Gunsmith	Investigative
Coroner	Investigative
Sibling (Town)	Associative
Sibling (Scum)	Scum
Mason (Scum)	Scum
Cult Recruiter	Associative
Cultist	Associative
Inventor	Controller
Survivor	Neutral
Bulletproof Vest	Protective
Noble	Vote-modifier
Suicidal	Misleading
Commuter	Protective
Reporter	Investigative
Reflector	Controller
Mailman	Associative
Soothsayer	Investigative

So which ones as I missing? Which are miscategorized? Siblings, obviously, are one of the hardest... maybe they and Traitors go in a separate type, but it's really nice having all Scum in one block. Neutrals are also problematic.

Wouldn't a fireman be protective?

I assume it's more to do with how they would be played in a game as opposed to what they're theoretically meant to do. I wouldn't really call a Fireman a protective role, considering how he can only protect against the one guy.

I would say neutral is more of a catagory then a role...there are any number of different types of roles that could be loosly catagorized as neutral.

Otherwise, though, I like it, I think most roles could be catagorized as one of those. For example, mailman (GG who can somehow send messages to other people outside of the thread; different rolenames but a common role) would be "assosiative", role manipulator would be "controling", and there are lots of roles that could be grouped with "investigative".

Psychiatrist seems like more than investigative.

You might need:

Bulletproof roles (commuter or vest)
Reflector
Governor (lynch veto power)
various tracker/watcher (same as Lassie maybe?)
Hider roles
Lyncher maybe?
Vengeful roles (harmful side effect to death)

Also I don't really understand what the official definition of "traitor" is.

Also a double-voter (not really sure what that's called, though in the past I called it a Noble), can't say I'm sure what category it would go in.

Mayor

Guard Protective (stops lynches)

"hybrid" roles (doc/vig, cop/doc, etc)

Jack of all trades (see^^^)

I'm guessing "cannabal" is similar to vampire (gains the abilities of the people he/she kills).

I believe a Cannibal is just form of SK.

Survivor (must live to endgame to win in addition to normal requirements) and Sucidial (must be lynched to win) probably should be added. I'd guess that Survivor is either it's own category or Vanilla, while Suicidal should go under misleading.

Mayor
I'm not talking about a mayor, I'm talking about a role with
just
doublevote, no pardoning/daykill abilities.

Also, don't forget about roles with no vote (traditionally called a 'chinaman') and Kamakazi (or is that what 'bomb' is?).

Yeah, Bomb is Kamikaze/War Veteran/Crazy Man On Porch w/Shotgun... they kill roles that target them (sometimes all, sometimes just killing roles).

I'm not looking for all name variants, and I may just end up with a "Special/Special" category, as I can't normalize everything, but it'll help get a grip, especially on the C9 debate. That's where I'm starting, all the other roles will come in later... thanks for BP Vest/Commuter, and Survivor/Suicidal... I may make Survivor/Neutral a combined entry, since they function virtually identical in most cases. Thanks guys, keep it up!

I'd put those both under "neutral" I think. Lyncher is also a good example of a neutral role.

There might also be a catagory of people who manipulate votes; double voters, people who can manipulate your vote directly, vote stealers, lynch protectors, mayors, ect.

Looking for common roles, not one-game roles.
(BM's Mafiascum Mafia Mafia doesn't count)

Cults probably ought to be classified as scum.

Cults aren't always scum, that's just how they're most commonly used.

Well, in most games these days, good guy groups that recruit are usually called "recruiting masons" or something like that, to differentiate them from evil cult groups.

Fireman is protective.

Fireman is protective, good catch.

I've not seen a recruiting cult that was on the town's side in recent years; it sounds a bit like the "searching masons" (Ren looking for Stimpy, Luke looking for Leia, etc) idea. Associative, definitely, like regular masons, though. I may have to pick out things like Mason (scum) and Cult* as special cases in analysis...

How about the matchmaker/cupid role?
