I think secret hydras are rubbish regardless of the definiton, but not secret alts if it's the latter.
Generally have no problem with alts.
As a moderator I will not permit a secret hydra of any kind. They need to have defined players with a valid username that is able to meet the requirements to play in my game.- T-Bone

The intent of the law is more important than the letter of the law (or in this case the rule). So the rules are fine and do what they are supposed to do even if they don't spell out every ridiculous situation.- Rob14

I know I hate it when, like, there's this one thing, like, that's not allowed, and then, like, you know, there's this other, like, thing, that is allowed, and I'm like, that's, like, you know, hypocritical.- zoraster

The rule is that you can't discuss your ongoing game with another person UNLESS the moderator allows for it. Known hydras are allowed by the moderator and implicit in that is the ability to communicate with the other member(s) in the hydra about the game. If you use a secret cabal of players in a secret hydra, the moderator hasn't given the players permission to discuss the ongoing games.

The no talking about ongoing games rule made sense when hydras weren't a thing. While zero tolerance with regards to talking about games was a bit over-the-top, you have to draw the line somewhere, and that's the easiest place to draw it. The introduction of hydras has eaten into that territory - it started out as a rare thing and people dismissed it, but it has gradually grown as a concept and now people play in three or four headed hydras. That is commonplace. I think it's naive to expect it to stop there. And while it's not common for people operate hydras like "me and two scummers, but I'm the only that posts, I just talk to them about the game when I feel like it" I expect it to happen more.
If you think it's pointless to talk about things before they are actuallythings, fair enough, we'll talk about it later when they start happening more. But I think it's interesting to think about now. I'm not necessarily opposed to hydras, more that if you're relaxing that rule for people to play as a hydra, why not relax it for singular users?- chamber

I don't think that's true? I can think of a couple examples but with the exception of triforce they've all crashed and burned.Taking a break from the site.- zoraster

No one is relaxing the rule on ongoing games on anyone from a listmod perspective.
Again, the rule is that if the moderator allows it, players can discuss their ongoing game with others not in the game or other players from the game outside of the game. The moderator allows the hydra, thus the moderator allows the communication between hydra partners. If a moderator wanted to say that hydras cannot talk outside the game, he or she would be free to do that too, but this isn't typically how hydras are conceived. Moderators can also if they wish describe HOW hydras can communicate with each other outside the game thread (e.g. only at Night or only via private topic).
Whether mods should allow hydras is an entirely different discussion, though I see the related topics as valid (e.g. the fact you can discuss the game with someone else as a hydra at the very least makes your participation DIFFERENT than a solo users)..- Hoopla

I think I just enjoy Psyche's ruleslawyering on wanting to explore where the line is with hydras, because for a while I wanted to start a hydra with another scummer (or two) where I am the only one making posts and my hydra buddies are just there for occasional consultation. So, technically I am claiming credit for this idea...- Psyche

The point of this thread more than anything was to collect a large hoard of users into a secret network of secret hydras so evil and so insidious that mafia as we know it is broken down forever. Sadly, this truly sincere and noble effort has failed due to the valiant rule clarification work of zoraster and "others". - Psyche
