Serene got town read for doing it, we lynched the BP townie they claimed mason with, and then Serene got NK'd the night before LyLo because they were the only town slot left that could potentially turn the game.

You can fake claim as a weak Doctor too, as long as you HEAVILY breadcrumb your next target

if you're starting from a position where you're run up and forced to claim, any gambit you try is probably doomed from the get go

There are other times when it's appropriate to claim.

One time as an assassin off-site I claimed CPR Doctor. All of my reasoning and night actions made perfect sense but they lynched me when people accused me of being the assassin and I kept repeating "I'm not the assassin" when people were questioning me. Oh the good ol' days.
