I understand why people wouldn't like them however. Also, part of the fun in mafia is finding people to trust and work together with which becomes trivial when you have a hydra.

Eh? They still have same info as you. I feel like people who say things like this...haven't been in a hydra. You still need to find people to work with. Mafia is all about the rolePM not the people

Spoken like someone whose never been a Serene

There's much joy in life in logging in and finding 75 posts in thread by your hydra partners, and fifteen more in the hydra PT

And then combing through it to realize DGB and I don't always discuss our reads before posting, and oh yeah even though you're town, one of your heads has claimed Mason's with a player of unknown alignment

Actually, Serening makes me not want to retire. DGB's sense of child-like whimsy is a good balance to my style.

The thing I don't like about alts is game selection. When you look at a game in queue and there's like 8 people with recent start dates you know some of them are alts, but you don't know if they're people that you like or dislike playing with.

Probably Glork's new alt that he's playing a few games with.

Alts are the worst ....

Pretty much Geriatric game restricted at this point ... unless there are players I REALLY want to play with.

I find it interesting. There is an intimidating looking join date next to a lot of our names, how do people really treat newbies and players they don't know? I played around with that a bit.

Turns out newbies get a fair amount of leeway, but you can get your voice heard. My impression is that some players do get respect based on their join dates, but a lot of it is just based on how well you say what you say.

I think the main issue with alts on this site is that, upon an alt being in the game, far too many people's main aim in the game then becomes "figure out who it is an alt of", which can be quite irritating when the whole point of playing as an alt is to not be identified and not to have people using your main's meta.

I think we want to know the alt though because you want to know how they think, so you can think about why they are doing what they are doing. I mean if we want to apply psychology or something to mafia, shouldn't we want to actually know the person before doing that?

Because if you do, you might apply it wrong. Also, if hydra heads have to name themselves, wouldn't you consider an alt a half-hydra-neighbor-to-itself that isn't naming itself? I don't think it makes it less annoying for the alt to know that but I think we should be aware of that.

Which also makes me think, how powerful the effect of a town that knows each other, then a town that doesn't know anyone. Isn't misunderstanding something we want to avoid? Isn't a misunderstanding something that can lead to a mislynch?

I think one of the most valid reasons to create an alt is to make it so you can try out new playstyles without getting meta-hunted.

Well, there was that game (basically a Mafiascum.net game, but it was run offsite because the forums were down) where Glork outright said he was changing his meta, and then threatened to policy hammer someone if they tried to use a trust tell (they weren't banned at the time, and this is one of the incidents that let to the banning). He was pretty much universally read as town as a result and we ended up having to nightkill him (I was scum at the time). So although alts are good for hiding from meta, deciding you want to change your meta is something you can do without an alt. (Besides, in games I've seen where people aren't playing to their town meta, they're rarely scumread for it if they aren't playing to their scum meta either.)
