The first post should, at the games conclusion, tell you what went down. If you don't know the winners, players, rolenames, outcomes, and teams, go fix it.

Post a votecount every page, or as often as possible; if you get online and your game is five posts from the bottom of the page and haven't posted a votecount for a few pages, post a goddamn votecount. If you have time to prod someone, you have time to post a votecount. It doesn't matter if no votes have changed; pages have increased and deadline has decreased.
Also try to post a votecount every day, even if there's already one on that page. This is so the players know you're alive and don't come to me worried you're dead.
is this even really plausible in something like a large theme?

I just post a link to the next vote count at the top of every page. Or multiple links, if there is more than one vote count (or other important event) on that page.

The best way to do it is to just have no life and post faster than your players

Yeah, but then the VCs don't show up in your ISO.

What RedCoyote does is he puts all of his vote counts into a post on the first page (Mini 1694: Zodiac Mafia II). He doesn't edit vote counts into players' posts, but this is a possible alternative for people who wish to do that. The downside is that you emphasize certain players' posts by editing vote counts into them, but I don't think anyone has investigated how much of an effect there is.

I thought about doing this in the last game I modded but there would've been 9 vote counts on a single page if I had. As it was I had 30 more posts than the top poster when the game was over.

Should I have done it anyway?

Personally, I stick to one vote count per page. It's easy for players to keep track of votes within a page, anyway, and they shouldn't need their hands held. If the game is moving slowly to the point where multiple days have passed on a page, that calls for prods rather than a vote count.

Nine vote counts sounds like it'd be stifling conversation on that page, though.

there were so many prods that I memorised how to type a prod in french even though i don't speak french.

page 27 started on July 3rd and lasted until July 13th. I posted 6 times on that page: 1 vote count, 3 prods, 1 notice that the site was back from the 28 hour downtime (this was accompanied by a mass unofficial prod), 1 bump.

If there had been conversation on that page, it wouldn't have lasted 10 days :P

I like one vote count per page too, especially since mine are kind of big with the picture and the get a room thing.

Some of the players seemed to only post if the game got bumped in their ego search; I don't know if more vote counts would've helped with that aspect or not. Maybe not, because they tended to need something to reply to rather than than starting their own conversations and there's not much to reply to in an unchanged vote count.

Posting two vote-counts in a row (a day apart) is an excellent passive-aggressive way to complain about the lack of activity as a moderator, and the bump to the thread will get the game to the top of people's egosearches and maybe cause them to pay more attention.

I generally post a votecount approximately every day regardless of how much activity there has or hasn't been in the meantime. (If nothing else, this makes it easier to gauge the approximate amount of activity by looking at the votecount spacing.)

I came across this thread a few days ago and am applying pretty much most of the OP to my new game.

If there's more to know and better ways to go about your game modding please keep the advice coming. :)
