Notebook for your Replacement

Post Post #0 (ISO) » Mon Jun 06, 2016 10:32 am

So I have thought about this in general, but why don't we have a system that makes it easier for the replacements to get into the game?

I mean, it can be extremely difficult replacing into a game say that is 100+ pages. Especially if you are scum, since you have to make sure you don't reveal you don't know anything, and you have zero idea what your previous slot did. Did they perform gambits (such as weird role claim or feedback).

So why not make it a little easier? If a person thinks they are going to replace out. Simply make a detailed note post, send it to the moderator. The moderator will then forward that PM to the replacement(you).

I mean, this requires about two things:
1) The player replacing out has to beforehand make some notes to give to a moderator.
2) Moderator has to sanction this as acceptable.

I don't know. Food for thought.

I have done this before now using scum PT/QTs (when I was the only scum left), not so much because I thought I was going to replace out, but so that other players could see my thoughts after the game. Although if everyone was in the habit of doing this, it'd make replacements much easier.

It's also not unknown for me to do this as town, using an action PT/QT. (See here, for example, post 13 onwards.) Most games aren't complex enough to need one of those.

The last time this topic came up, we invented the concept of "dear diary Mafia" (in which each player has to keep a PT of notes about the game), and I was looking forward to it, but AFAICT it never actually ran.

If someone has life circumstances or apathy so bad that he has to replace out, he's probably not going to sit down and write a careful summary of the game. At most you'd get a "claimed jailkeeper in #112; scumread on accountant and firebringer; plotinus is probably cop(softclaimed in #302)" or something along those lines
There's nothing that says that a fake can't beat the real thing.

You must not imagine that for beings like you and us there can be laughter. The low men laugh, and we envy them. But for us, the higher ones, there is no laughter, only an unending vigil, purely serious, stretching on into the night.

Yes, but this would be great if it happened.

The most likely place for this to happen would be the replace-outs on the basis of "I want to keep playing, but have a two-week V/LA coming up a few days from now with no guarantee of access, as that's too long to wait you'd probably better replace the slot." That sort of replacement is typically more orderly than the other types.

In the opening posts of the game thread, I post my ruleset. At the top of the ruleset, in an area tag of its own for the people who aren't going to read the whole thing, I have:

important bit
  • 14-day day phase, 48 hour night phase
  • Majority lynches
  • 48 hours before prod, 24 hours before replacement, 24 hour weekends
  • Bah posts allowed (limit: 1, free of game related content)
  • I have some unusual rules about animated GIFs, tiny text, proxying, prodging, last words, quoting PTs, twilight, and fall back kills. Scroll down for details.
  • Don’t be a dick

Then if they do actually scroll down to read about the rules they haven't encountered before, they'll read:
Last words
- If you replace out, you may PM me with a message to leave for the person who replaces you and I'll pass it on to them.

Also, in my very first vote count of day 1, I write in the mod notes:

If they break one of the unusual rules, i'll quote just that rule in the game thread, but as a mod you can't really step in or prompty people, it's bad modding. You can't say "hey do you want to proxy your vote while you're vla" or "hey is there anything you want me to pass on to the person replacing you" or "hey why are you investigating him, he's obvtown."

I was modding a game recently at the fallout shelter and someone's IP was blacklisted for a little while but they could still post in their neighbourhood QTs and I wanted to say "hey you could proxy your vote to one of your neighbours and write posts for them to paraphrase into the main thread" but...I couldn't. Because the mod can't step in like that.
The failure mode of clever is asshole.
