Is engaging less in discussion a scumtell or a personality tell?

How alignment indicative are actions during RVS?

How alignment indicative are actions during RVS?
1) Both
2) Not very indicative

(1) It depends and is more likely a spectrum than anything else. For a lot of players, it's a mix of personality and alignment, which is why so many players make metagame arguments.

(2) It's not the RVS itself that matters. It's how they react to when you blow up a very, very minor action in RVS that
very slightly
suggests something possibly questionable that becomes more useful.

I know I'm no kind of authority on mafia theory or anything like that.. But

I think getting Scum reads during RVS is possible. I feel Scum are in an unnatural state during RVS and as such you can glean some info from what they do in RVS at the least.

Ok let me weigh in.

For the first one, I agree that it's a combination of playstyle and alignment. I think there are some things that can help you tell the difference; for example if someone is putting in a lot of effort but not engaging in discussion a lot that could be a red flag.

For the second one, personally I think RVS (or at least early d1) interactions are a lot more alignment-indicative than people give them credit for. Since there's not much to go off of, I find you can sometimes tell whether players are actually trying to get discussion going, as that can be hard to fake.

if you think you can get a scum read off people from RVS because they have difficulty figuring out what to do, chances are you aren't playing against competent players

Probably, but not necessarily.

For practice, I sometimes like to read the first 5 pages of an micro and try to guess the scum team. I usually get 1 out of 2.

if a micro game isn't out of rvs by page 5 then they're very clearly not competent players

if your argument is simply that you can get reads on d1, then sure, i think very few people would disagree... that's not rvs though, and if you can consistently guess 1/2 scum (in 9p games?) from that then either you're an amazing scum hunter or they're just not very good players in the first place

Maybe not on this site RVS is not as good of an indicator for catching Scum, but other places I have played where RVS is often a gif fest, Scum have a harder time faking like they are just Town having fun.

This. I mean, I consider myself to be an extremely strong player when it comes to setting up fake associative tells, and indeed I've seen people comment to that effect about my play. I've watched towns run circles in frustration after my scum flip, trying to make sense of over 300 posts in which I managed to confuse any ties with any other players.

So I'll say this: against any player that's been scum more than once or twice, there is probably a close to 0% chance they're getting caught out in the cold by RVS. It's one of those things that very quickly becomes easy, and in fact I'd say RVS play is one of the first skills that players learn when playing scum.
Join me on my quest to play every NES game! Some of them are awful.

Kuribo's read is foolproof: one night he was high on NyQuil, and he's ancestors reveiled Aureal's alignment to him. - Dessew

RVS is by far my favorite phase as scum.
There's nothing that says that a fake can't beat the real thing.

You must not imagine that for beings like you and us there can be laughter. The low men laugh, and we envy them. But for us, the higher ones, there is no laughter, only an unending vigil, purely serious, stretching on into the night.

There is definitely a difference playing RVS on this site compared to others. Here, its just a matter of throwing out a random vote for no real reason. Other places Scum have to pretend like they don't have an agenda and are just joining in with the fun. In short, RVS here is down to the basics and Scum have no reason to act out of the ordinary while other places where more things are happening Scum have to actually act a bit.
