Hey guys?

I self-voted as town, and it was totally the right choice under the circumstances.

http://forum.mafiascum.net/viewtopic.php?f=83&t=67199

tl;dr: 3:1:1 Day 2, I am top suspect, but people are refusing to lynch me because of my supposed partner or some shit. Townies are bulletproof, so I would for sure be lined up for a Day 3 lynch in what would most likely be MYLO or LYLO, so I try to get myself lynched while a mislynch is still okay.

Turns out this just ended up turning away suspicion from me, plus we lynched the actual partner of the guy I was supposed to be scum with instead, so I lived all the way to a town endgame.

Pointing out the 1 time it works doesnt invalidate the 500000 times it doesnt

The only situation I can see this potentially being useful is if you're a Cop and you have innocent results on over half the remaining playerlist (in which case, proving you aren't lying with your townflip gives town an immediate victory). Even then, I wouldn't risk it unless it was known that scum had no way to have interfered with the investigations.

Obviously, this situation doesn't come up very often. (It could theoretically happen at 4:1 in a Mini Normal that has an unlimited Cop, or even at 5:2 if two nightkills failed somehow. That doesn't mean it
does
happen, just that it could.)

Self-voting at 3p lylo when you're Vengeful has become common enough that I'm surprised that people still try it; you'd expect scum to be aware of the trick by now. I guess Vengeful is still rare enough for the trick to work.

What if a cop is trying to prove results?

If you have a claimed cop guilty, treat it as a 1v1. In most cases, the correct action is to lynch the player that the guilty was claimed on, then lynch the "cop" if the guilty was a lie. This is because it's not normally in scum's interest to trade themself for three townies by faking a guilty, and thus guilty claims most often come from town.

If you have a claimed cop innocent, then play as though it weren't there, except that any time you would want to lynch the innocent, you lynch the cop instead (as the innocent can't be scum unless the cop is).

Most likely the scum will prove the results for you by nightkilling the cop – it's incredibly risky for them to leave the cop alive. On the offchance that the "cop" is scum, you'll still get mildly useful (if WIFOMy) information from the nature of the claims, and it'll considerably cut down the number of scumteams you have to consider at lylo. At least, following this sort of strategy makes a lot more sense than lynching the cop, as you aren't sacrificing a lynch + a nightkill in order to gain a marginal advantage.

(Note that if the cop claim is made
during
lylo, there's a rather different set of considerations. But of course, lynching a town cop during lylo would lose you the game anyway, so the only reason to consider it is if you're pretty sure that the claim is fake.)

Voting yourself doesn't prove anything, unless it leads to a lynch.

Getting lynched and flipping town does prove something, but the gain is incredibly small compared to having a lynch available and denying Mafia the nightkill they'd get in response. (Not to mention that if you have shots left, you're also denying town the benefit of your future investigations.)
