Backups and Normal Games

Implo and I got to discussing on site chat about interpretations of backups for normal games.

Basically, if you have Backup Doctor and an even-night doctor dies, what happens? What if you are a Backup Even-Night Doctor and a (modifier-less) Doctor dies? Etc.

This is very terse and I could go into more detail, but that will come later; for now, think about these and discuss your opinion on the matter.

I always interpreted it to mean that you become the role that died. So:
Even-night Doctor dies, Backup Doctor becomes Even-night Doctor.

Backup Even-Night Doctor is not a normal thing IMO, but if it did exist, nothing would happen to it upon the death of a normal Doctor.

Meanwhile, if you have an Even-Night Backup Doctor, do they only become a Doctor if a Doctor dies on an even night?

One of the main judgement calls we have to make in the NRG is figuring out what a combination of Normal modifiers does if you apply it to a role that isn't obviously compatible with those modifiers.

the solution is to not be stupid and instead design unambiguous roles

(These two are often mutually inclusive, by the way. The Normal Review Group
highly
advises the practice of not being stupid and/or ambiguous in design choices, since we're just gonna have to fix it anyway. :P)
