What defines a bad/average/good/great player?
I am just wondering. For example, what strengths and weaknesses do you think each should or would portray? Sometimes I commit mistakes in my play and I wonder if I were better, that I would refrain from making such mistake. One mistake I have in mind is being wishy washy and uncertain of a player's alignment, and taking a risk and voting that person when there is a counter wagon. I took it, and D2 I got heat for it, I defended against it and showed my town. Yet, what I want to know is, would a player better than me not even try to reconsider at that point, simply to keep being read as town and not be given attention and suspicion? (That's just an example of a mistake)- Antihero

It's all about how well they can control who gets lynched (specifically, not them), and how often the person they want lynched is strategically good for their alignment (a fancy way of saying "they hit scum as Town, and they hit power roles as scum).
Those are the primary skills for this game. However they are accomplished is up to the individual.Everything you say and do matters. People will respond in ways you may never see. May those responses be what you intend.- Zorblag

Troll no actually be sure that be it.In post 5, Vi wrote:It's all about how well they can control who gets lynched (specifically, not them), and how often the person they want lynched is strategically good for their alignment (a fancy way of saying "they hit scum as Town, and they hit power roles as scum).

Troll no be a great player offhand, but Troll certainly won more games than Troll lost as both alignments. Troll no found that it was about driving the lynch in either case. As scum Troll was usually happy to let town make their mistakes and win in the path that was provided. Scum was Troll's stronger alignment, but Troll very seldom tried to get town to make particular lynches until the very end of the game. As town, Troll's reads were always decent, but nothing to write home about. In fact, Troll most often helped town just by drawing a night kill when there wasn't anything special about Troll. The better games though Troll did well by building trust among town with a couple good town reads. This no requires finding scum or driving particular lynches, but getting a town coalition that be stronger/larger than the scum's ability to overcome it.
This assumes we no be talking about super complicated games where controlling the powers of the other players becomes more advantageous and game changing, but being a great player (which should have something to do with increasing your teams chances of winning at a minimum,) need not involve as much control as Troll thinks many might assume.

Nah, I think you're talking about a different kind of control. Or perhapsinfluenceis the better word for it. You were able to influence the game to a substantial degree, and the way you did so was beneficial to your Win Condition.Everything you say and do matters. People will respond in ways you may never see. May those responses be what you intend.- Zorblag

There do be influence or control there, but it was largely the second bit you wrote that Troll was saying no actually be so important as people think it be. Much of the time, especially early in the game, a great player no actually needs to be making sure the right lynches go through to hit scum or power roles so much as them need to make sure the wrong lynches no go through.

I define a bad player by how severely the game is disrupted by the player's behavior.Video games can be educational. The Oregon Trail taught me that Manifest Destiny is fatal.

If you try it and it works, you're a good player.
If you try it and it doesn't work, you're a bad player.
Seems simple enough!My academy.

There are three skills you need as town:
1) Find scum.
2) Lynch scum.
3) Don't get lynched.
I'm fairly good at 3, moderately good at 2, not great at 1. However, I feel I can often be fairly useful to towns simply because removing myself from the lynchpool is a useful thing to do. If every townie was able to obvtown, scum would have nowhere to hide and get caught by PoE.
As scum:
1) Identify dangerous townies.
2) Eliminate dangerous townies (nightkill and/or lynch)
3) Don't get lynched.
I wouldn't consider myself above-average at scum. (I'm best at point 3 here, followed by 2 then 1, although I'm not great at any.) I've won quite a lot of games as scum but normally my scumbuddies (and occasional collapses from town) had quite a bit to do with it, as did the tendency of setups to be scumsided on average.
I think looking at the skills is a good way to assess how good someone's playing. If someone does well on all six, they're probably an amazing player. In fact, being sufficiently good at just two or three is probably enough to make you a considerable force to be reckoned with.scum· scam · seam · team · term · tern · torn ·town- Accountant

I'm actually absolute shit at actually going up to a person and pointing at them and saying "you are scum" and being right. But I can be pretty good obvtown, my townreads and subsequent townblocs are usually good, and that leads to a lot of PoE lynching right. I like to think I'm okay at getting on and building trust with other town. There's nothing that says that a fake can't beat the real thing.

My scumhunting sucks but my poe is good. Am I bad/average/good by your definition?
Currently I have never been lynched (self-lynched? Well, I was drunk.) nor nightkilled as any faction."The debate on whether short multi postings or a long wall of post is good or not is like a debate on gun control--we would never understand each other and we have to make peace with it." -Realeo

You have to be careful doing that though.
There are games where I've been so obvtown that I've actually caught scum simply because they doubted my towniness.
(There are also games where I've been scum, been the only player doubting the towniness of another obvtown player, but the other player was actually scum and cruised to victory after my death; admittedly the win was more them than me, but I like to think I contributed. I think you were modding that one?)scum· scam · seam · team · term · tern · torn ·town - callforjudgement
