Who should a tracker investigate with multiple scum alive?

Post Post #0 (ISO) » Thu Nov 10, 2016 3:36 am

Post by Summer Night »

If there's 2-4 scum in the game, should a tracker follow her biggest suspect or try to check for power roles?

From the scum's POV, should they send the most suspected (expendable) member, or the least suspected?

I'm just curious to what the general strategy should be. Trackers are so much weirder than cops and I couldn't find much advice with the search button.

The same can be said about who doctor/watcher should protect/watch. Can be WIFOMed, hence why there isn't a fixed strategy.

There's enough WIFOM around that I think the best strategy is probably to investigate your (or the town's) second-strongest scumread. Someone who's universally read as scum probably won't perform the kill (unless the scum are planning to sacrifice/bus them), and most people are sufficiently bad at finding scum that there's enough randomness in this investigation that scum can't really WIFOM it. (Besides, someone who's looked sort-of scummy all game, but not enough to be lynched, has an above-average chance of being town power.)

Personally I'd never go for players who have been very scummy on the given day to track because they are highly unlikely to perform the NK. I'd target a player who has been a little scummy and in the lurking territory.
I've observed that scum players who aren't really being town read or scum read, people in the nullish pile perform the kill.

It's complicated because some scum play differently than others.

One game I was scum playing against ranger who we knew was roleblocker.
We as scum knew she wouldn't roleblock the obvious scum member, because people wouldn't normally kill using the obvious scum. So to counter that, we killed using the obvious scum :D
And it turned out she was targeting between the other two of us, was 50-50 as to which and almost switched choice, meaning neither of the other choices would have been safe/good.

I'd track whichever of my scumreads are more townread by the majority/consensus, but who I still feel somewhat confident are scum.
I'd target a player who has been a little scummy and in the lurking territory.
I don't think lurkers are that good an option though, because people like to investigate lurkers and I think scum know that.

Obviously in the end it is mostly WIFOM like call says.

I agree with this.

As a Track I'm pretty sure most Mafia's will have the person least likely to be investigated kill.
Generally that would be the person most widely town read of the scum team.

There are two main strategies for killing with scum: killing with the least scummy in the hope they won't be tracked, or killing with the scummiest so that you don't lose much if they are.

This makes it very hard to aim a track, especially as the former strategy is likely more common. (The difference is if you're planning to bus someone; in such a situation, you may as well have the bussee make the kill.)

Someone who fits as under the radar scum or claimed a power role earlier in the game and is still scummy.

I prefer tracking players who are playing towny because I feel like mafia would want their least suspected player to perform the night kill + in the situation I am successful, it would be harder to build a case on such players without hard evidence.
