GAME OF THE YEAR VOTING

Please see other Scummies Finalists Here

Please take a moment to review and vote for your favorite game or games as Game of the Year.
Game of the Year: Also known as the “Player’s Choice” Award. This award is given to the moderator of a game. It is given in recognition of the overall excellence of a game. The Game of the Year award is a "catch all" award for the best overall game throughout the entire year, considering all aspects of the game from moderator quality, to the excellent design and composition of the game, to the performance and cohesion of the playerlist. A Game of the Year is meant to be the game that we can all point to later and say "This game was the best game the site could offer that year in terms of Design, Playerlist, and moderating capability." This is a PUBLIC VOTE.

Finalists
(See below for more detail)
Adventurer Mafia
Freedom's Call uPick
Street Fighter Mafia
Gistou
SaGA Frontier Mafia

Adventurer Mafia
Reason Given:
"""To be quite honest, when I played this, I began to get bored of it due to how time-consuming, etc it was. But looking back, it was a great game; sure, it didn't have super neat roles and other aspects that make games look cool (it was a large normal after all), but the game demonstrates what mafia should truly be focused on.

Too often in theme games, people get tied up with the roles and mechanics and forget completely about the day play. The day play is the heart of mafia, and while it can be frustrating at times, it is by far the most important part of the game. In many theme games, after day 1 ends, the game is practically over in about 2 weeks or less because players suddenly stop caring about the day care and just vote the largest wagon. On the other hand, since normals emphasize day play, they tend to last longer.

What makes this game stand out is its phenomenon scum team; every step of the way, they had everything planned out. Even when they didn't have something planned, or things didn't go their way, they always were able to figure out an alternative plan that led to their success.

Another contributing factor is how the game was moderated. SirCakez is a fantastic mod (and while he did make the mistake of hinting to players there was a mafia encryptor, I'm sure many of us have had similar slips). The vote count frequency was above average, player issues were handled well, flips were timely, and most importantly, the moderator maintained interest throughout the game. The difference between a good moderator and a poor moderator in my opinion is their investment in their games: a poor moderator may be excited about their games at the start, but towards the end, they no longer care and neglect updating the initial post and stop posting vote counts on a timely basis. The moderator is the driving force behind the game, and they will dictate whether the game is a success or a failure."""

Freedom's Call
Reason Given:
"The game may have been short (the epilogue was posted before the countdown timer for D1 had expired), but it was ridiculously fun. The setup was solid, and the role PMs excellently crafted, with the actual game being just as interesting.
""">creative, innovative, and fun setup.
>modded flawlessly
>awesome and polished role pms
>chemistry of the playerlist was great and made for a fun game

not much more you can ask for in a game."""

Streetfighter
Reason Given:

Gistou
Reason Given:
The town put up a strong early-showing, and in spite of this, it was not a town sweep. The last scum was able to be fairly convincing, and was only lynched in a 4p mylo down the line."

SaGA Frontier Mafia
Reason Given:
The moderation, the setup, the flavor, the mechanics....just everything about the game was exceptional, and it all came down to an effective 3 way lylo with 7 players between 3p, town, and groupscum. Just a fantastic game, and one I'm very happy to have participated in.
"""Because it exceeds the definition of awesome.

I'm 2nd-ing Cerberus v666's nomination, so whatever he said x2.

If he didn't mention it, players actually did some roleplaying, and were really dedicated to the game. 400+ pages says as much. :D"""

Some very ambitious games in the pool this year ... good for MS that creative Mods still are keeping up the good work!

Pretty much Geriatric game restricted at this point ... unless there are players I REALLY want to play with.

I think that it's only reasonable that only people who played in all 5 games be allowed to vote.

SO TITUS WHO IS THE WINNER!?
2019 stats: Town WR 76.7%, overall WR 81.667%, 1 scum defeat involving a major mod error in lylo vs 8 scum wins.

You jest, but I actually think that the opinion of a player who WAS in all of the games is, objectively, one of the best possible metrics to have, whose input would be disproportionately helpful compared to anyone else. They have the first-hand experience to rank all the games appropriately. Nobody else can say that.

I do think Street Fighter Mafia was good enough to be a GOTY contender, but it has no chance of winning without a description of some sort. I'm not the one who originally nominated it, so here's my opinion of the game.

Spoiler:
The Mafia team had a Neighborhood Spy (essentially a Neighbor whose presence in the Neighborhood was unannounced) and a Private Topic Cop fake-claim (checks to see if a player has access to a private topic of any kind) that were intended to be used in conjunction with each other: the Spy would tell the player pretending to be the PT Cop who was in the Neighborhood so the PT Cop could "clear" people and distribute fake guilties as needed. It was a formidable combination that was going to be the Mafia team's best weapon.

On Day 2, Antihero, using the PT Cop fake-claim, faked a "guilty" on beeboy (who was neighborized in the pre-game) that almost got him lynched. When beebs was at L-1, Antihero explained the nature of his "guilty" result, everyone facepalmed at the misunderstanding, and Antihero vs. beeboy was universally regarded as Town vs. Town.

The Mafia team was in an excellent position and everything was going according to plan...until the Town Dayvig shot the Neighborhood Spy. That flip practically confirmed the Neighborizer as Town. Then, as an extra kick to the gut, Titus, the Mafia team's Roleblocker and Strongman (a direct counter to the Town Bulletproof/Double Doctor) was the Day 2 lynch. In one fell swoop, the Mafia team lost its two best roles while several Town players were practically confirmed Town in the process. They were screwed, and I was already preparing to apologize to the Mafia team for creating such a Town-sided setup.

They lost another member, Varsoon, on Day 4. In the meantime, Antihero, who was actually a Reflexive Poisoner, was putting in some overtime by enticing Town PRs to visit him so they would be marked for death. He poisoned Heat. He poisoned TiphaineDeath. He poisoned Almost50. TiphaineDeath was doing a good job keeping people alive as the aforementioned Double Doctor, but there was still at least one death per night thanks to the rampant poisonings. Due to the events of Day 2, nobody suspected Antihero of being Scum.

Then, Day 7 happened. With three red flips in a 21-player game, Town knew they were looking for two more Scum players. Both zakk and Suzune had independently been very scummy and suspicious, so there was a consensus that those two were the last Scum players remaining. When they revealed that they were actually Masons, every other player in the game unanimously said, "Bullshit. This is just a last-ditch effort to save yourselves." However, zakk and Suzune decided that they would not go quietly into that good night and fought tooth and nail to convince everyone that they were Town. Eventually they succeeded and, despite loads of opposition, strong-armed a lynch on Antihero. He flipped red, and there was much rejoicing.

zakk died on Night 7, and as soon as Day 8 began, two votes were placed on Nosferatu, putting him at L-1. Ranger, the last remaining member of the Scum team, could have
easily
just hammered him, but she was more patient and cautious than that. She spent almost the entire two-week Day phase deliberating and weighing her options before finally hammering Nosferatu. It was a risky move to make since she was also at L-1 and could have been hammered herself at any time, but it paid off. On Day 9, with confirmed-Town Suzune trying to decide between Ranger and Dwlee99, she reasoned that Scum-Ranger would not have been so hesitant to hammer Nosferatu on the previous day. She hammered Dwlee and that was that.

Both Town and Scum played very well in this game and fought their hardest to win for their respective teams. The Mafia team, despite being so thoroughly screwed over at the very beginning, stuck it out and pulled off the improbable victory against a formidable Town faction, which included a Dayvig, Double Doctor, Tracker, and two Masons. It was a very exciting game to follow, with players who tried their hardest to win and only a small handful of replacements.

if anyone is interested in how to lose an unloseable game.

read street fighter.
As the last rays of sunlight fade, one killer chases another through the tangled madness of the city.
A flash of steel announces the presence of his quarry.
The stage is set.
The night explodes.
