Movies and TV Shows like Mafia

I was talking in scumchat about this movie I saw on Netflix recently called Circle. The basic premise (from wiki):
Fifty people wake up in a darkened room, arranged in two concentric circles around a black dome. Noises sound when they attempt to move or touch the others. When someone ignores the warning and leaves formation, a beam from the dome kills them. As the others panic, a man attempts to calm them. In mid-sentence, he is killed by the device. Thereafter, every two minutes, another person is killed. After several people die, they realize they can vote for who dies. When nobody votes, one is selected randomly.

The movie is literally just this - people talking, arguing, discussing, who should die next. It's fantastic and very much reminds me of the discussions that occur in games here.

There are actually a lot of times when I come across situations in movies or tv shows where I'm like, ok so it's basically mafia

it also reminds me how far lurking can get you in a game.

Probably not what you had in mind for this thread but the BBC has a panel show called
Would I Lie To You?
that feels pretty Mafia-ish in a lot of ways. It's fun to play along with at home. You start getting meta tells on some of the regular contestants after a while.

The Mole series works a a sort of "Town versus Serial Killer" set-up ... one player motivated to sabatoge the other players and escape discovery.

Circle was a decent movie, but its better not knowing much about it going into it because it adds to general emotions of characters early on. A interesting part for discussion after watching it is

Spoiler:
Who actually are the antagonists and protagonists in the movie, if there even are any.

Light would have gotten away with everything if he had just lurked instead of responding to L's challenges

Congratulations that's literally the whole point of the series

And I don't even watch anime

Except I saw Akira in high school

But I didn't understand it

But then again no one does

in the alternative storlyline where light just lurks, he doesn't have as much knowledge about or control over the course of the investigation, leaving him vulnerable in other ways

Well, the whole point of the story is that Light is an egotist who thinks he alone knows who should live and die in order to create a perfect world. He can't help but interject himself into the events because his ego won't allow it.

Essentially the summary is that Death Note is a mafia game where there are 7 billion players and mafia autowins on Day 500(or whatever, to represent Kira taking over the world and everyone bowing down to him - we see the US and others doing this in canon). In that kinda game lurking is basically the best strategy

What was your interpretation of it? My interpretation was that Light's mistake was to do stuff that narrowed down the suspect list, such as using police information or that thingy shamingy with Lind Tailor

it's a description of what he did wrong, not a prescription for what to do right
article says ideal play is constant misdirection
