Hi everyone!

So I've noticed that there are a good amount of newer people on this site who want to learn to how to mod and how to improve as a mod (myself included). The purpose of this thread is for newer mods to be paired with more experienced mods when they are modding their first few games. I've noticed a lot of people asking me (and others) for advice on how to mod.


Here's an example. Virtuoso signs up as a new mod. He goes into that section of the list below. Mastina (just as an example) is already signed up as a regular moderator, so Virtuoso gets paired with Mastina, and they mod a game together. Virtuoso, the player who wishes to better his modding skills, gets some good knowledge / experience with someone who is willing to give it.

This thread is different from the backup mod thread in that this is primarily a teaching thread. The backup/co moderator must be wiling to give advice and help keep the game moving smoothly.

Guidelines

/In as a Learner if:

You are a first time moderator or a newer moderator who has questions about how modding works and how to create setups.

/In as a Teacher if:

You have a significant number of games as a successful moderator (at least 4 or 5) and are willing to show new moderators how modding works.

(I'm not sure if I'm allowed to do the NRG review if I'm going to be teaching and therefore the backup mod, but I'll let the listmods sort that out; my guess is yes, on the basis that setup reviewers often get roped in as emergency backup mods as it is; they at least have more knowledge of the setup than a random emergency mod would.) If you're interested, create a private topic for the setup, give me access, and I'll review it there. (If you can't create private topics, let me know and I'll create one for you.)

i'd appreciate that; i think virtuoso offered to just review it but i don't think he was offering to backup mod(he's already backup modding too much shit tbh)

I know I've run right up against backup modding limits before now (never exceeded them, but there was one point where I would have had to decline more backup modding duties if people had asked). It's a bit quieter at the moment, though (mostly because I've been mostly away from the site for months).

soliciting a collaborative partner. not so much a co-mod, reviewer or learning/teaching relationship. just someone that wants to bounce ideas off one another with some vague intention of running games in the future. i don't really have a clue who would be into this and i don't feel like asking people that are probably overgamed. thanks

I guess what I want to see/learn is how a game is made. Do you post stuff into a PT first to keep track and then roll to figure out who gets what? I have no idea! I'd like to see behind the curtain. Is that how stuff is reviewed?

I make my "behind the scenes" moderator information public once the game's ended. Here's a particularly good one if you're interested to see what goes on from the mod point of view; it contains a bit of review at the start (although the setup was an Open setup that had already been reviewed in its own thread, so there's no setup discussion in the mod thread; that's fairly common because Opens/Normals/Newbies all have their own review processes), mod/backup mod interaction, standard day-to-day game running things (like linking to threads that are created, recording confirmations, noting game results, noting PMs from players, etc.), and handling of a rules breach (which lead to the game being restarted). (One thing that's worth noting is that things that are posted in the game thread often aren't also posted in the mod thread, so sometimes you need to read the game thread to understand the context of the mod thread.)

I've hit three months on site and want to mod games. Maybe in the towards November or something. While I do have experience modding games on my home site, I have no experience with the finer points on how things work here behind the scenes.

I like running larger themed games, usually based on some content that I have lore knowledge of, usually those tend to have varied mechanics and sometimes special rules while still following the basic mafia game running style, I'm going to start small scale with a mini normal.

So, I'm looking for a co-mod to run that game with me... anyone game?

Specifics about IRL for me that affect me modding games:

Limited internet access at work: I'm on mobile until I get home, and while I can read and respond and so dome things, vote counts might not happen from me until evening (CST US). Also depending on where I might have to fill in at work, I might be unavailable completely until I'm home in the evening. So help with vote counts would be great.
