Have a theme, need a setup?

Post Post #0 (ISO) » Tue Oct 03, 2017 10:41 am

Post by callforjudgement »

One of the trends I've noticed in the mod queues recently is a comparative shortage of themed games that are designed in advance; the theme queues are having trouble getting mods, and there's been an uptick in upick games (which is a sign that there's a shortage of designed/reviewed setups ready to go).

I'm personally interested in theme modding (and have had some setups that I've been working on for years, not just the usual weeks), but something that's holding me back is that I don't really have the time at the moment to settle down and write themed flavour, I'm not reliably online enough to be able to mod anything remotely time-sensitive without a co-mod, and I'm not really certain as to what themes might or might not be popular. On the other hand, I'm willing to try to design a setup around a particular theme.

I think it's likely that there's prospective Theme mods out there with the opposite situation: they have a theme in mind and plenty of ideas for writing the flavour, but aren't sure what the setup would look like. Maybe there are other mods out there in my situation, too. As such, I think it'd be worth trying to get some sort of collaboration going between mods who have a theme but not a setup, and mods who have a setup but not a theme, and trying to get more Theme games into the queue. (Presumably once the game has been designed, it'd be run by both moderators together, either as co-moderators or as a mod/backup mod situation.)

Anyone out there interested in something like this? I'm not too fussy about the game size (although I'm not that experienced at balancing Larges, the setup would need a separate reviewer anyway). Note that per Mafiascum rules, you'll need one moderated game on mafiascum.net to run a Theme game (more if the player count is sufficiently large).

I'm in a pretty similar boat and am happy to join in the offer. Especially for larges, which I do have some experience balancing.

I don't want to be rude, but you have been on the site for less than a week.

I don't think there's any particular reason to think that you're up to balancing a large theme or even a mini theme.

Why is it signed up as an SE, then? Something alts are explicitly prohibited from doing?

I got special permission because the mods were sorry for banning me and not banning KK.

Yeah, but legitimately alts are explicitly prohibited from being SE until they have requisite experience on that account, which this one does not.

Bumping this because I find myself in a similar situation. Most of the enjoyment I get from being a moderator comes from the actual running of a game. I enjoy watching games play out from the sidelines while providing players with prompt votecounts and flips and fair moderation. I don't especially enjoy the creativity that goes into flavor and game design of a well made Theme Game. I'm happy to help with things like balance and role PM formatting, but building a setup from scratch is something that doesn't appeal to me. Because of this I've mostly kept to moderating semi-open setups like greatest idea and newbie games. I'd like to venture into the Theme queues because there does appear to be a low supply of moderators.

If there are prospective moderators out there who's interests lean in the direction of flavor and game design, and who would be interested in collaborating for a theme game, please shoot me a PM or post in this thread. I'm willing to take the bulk of the responsibility for running the game if there is someone out there who has a theme and setup but not the time to run it.

I'm a graphic designer and a writer. I can write flavor, find images, and design fancy things for games if desired. :) don't ask me to do setup design though, I'll break everything.

Anyone's interested, just lemme know.
