We could also start a rating system for each alignment.
Using something like msoft's true skill.
Can x10 or x100 it to make the numbers prettier.

Everyone starts at same amount now and after every game just take avg rating of each team before game with the result and do + teamratingchange/teamsize to everyone.

and just not count multiball and bastard and 3p games and stuff like that for simplicity.

I'm also too lazy to do this (mhmsmith0).

edit: actually if we're compiling stats from the last year might as well count the last year in the above too...

there's a pretty large inherent bias at work here from the kind of approach you suggest
namely that there's a WIDE variety of win rates by queue, which is to say nothing of the winrate variance inside most of these queues due to setups (i.e. a lot of people are really shitty at balancing games reasonably and so you get a big RNG for whether you randed the faction screwed over or not), as well as due to SK/multiball (i.e. the win rate of town or scum in single ball is likelier to be higher than their respective win rates in multiball or games with SK's)

Basically there's a pretty good reason why I restricted my player rating analysis to the newbie queue, which is at least a decently large sample size of games with a rigidly fixed setup... and even there you see a lot more noise than I'm really comfortable with.

I don't think it matters that much.
And SOME rating system is better than no rating system imo.
The point would be to just look at average team ratings and be like "ok this side was favored by about this much assuming the settup is fair".
Games that are not just town faction vs. 1 mafia faction or are but have bastard/sufficiently crazy mechanics can just not be counted.

but we're both probably sufficiently lazy even for that so.

Or you could have a relatively closed group where you play regular games among the group. Something like a year-long series where you have I dunno like 17 people, and then you start up a new game every month (either all 17 or some subset of the 17, depending on availability), and then you just track the stats for that group. It's not QUITE the standard norm, but if you have a group of people who all like playing with each other, I doubt it'd be all that problematic to set something like that up.

I think that games are too long and people don't play enough of them for any elo system to matter
there's also a lot of noise regarding how different queues and games line up, the newbie queue is the closest to reasonable in this sense

Let's also not forget that an elo rating is only meaningful if, the system it observes is competitive in nature, and the players under the system are symmetrical

I'd leave it as an empty quote but this seems to literally be a thing that people complain about anytime anyone tries to create a ruleset that is 'different.' No one is forcing you to play so if you don't like it just... don't.

Also last time I checked which admittedly was a while ago site meta was moving in the opposite direction as the Geriatric ruleset so I doubt it's going to become a mafia standard anymore than any other kind of different ruleset ever has in the ancient history of everything on this site.
