Spectators in Newbie Games

Post Post #0 (ISO) » Tue Nov 06, 2018 3:47 am

I notice that ICs serve to teach newbies while also playing, but I think it's hard to do that while also maintaining zero bias.
They also sometimes get NK'd/lynched early, and their teaching experience stops there.

How effective would spectator IC/SEs be in Newbie games? They'd only comment on mechanics/theory, explain abbreviations/posts etc, last through the game, and carry no bias.

Newbies need more newbies, not more experienced players in them.

A day is enough to play by example. The fundamentals gone over in day 1 should help newbies when they're on their own.

Nah. If anything, treestump the existing IC as a neutral alignment.

Then the only bias involved is the IC's alignment preference.

Not that I'm advocating this option, but it would make more sense than interlopers.
Does this post forward a scum win con, or do you just think I'm strange?

Strange != Scum

well, explaining mechanics, abreviations, etc should be host's (or other players) duty, as long as newbies ask for explanations, as for explaining posts and discussing theory i'd say it's too much, be it spectator or someone else not involved with the game

Bias in a spectator/dead IC is impossible to avoid.
  • If they're as uninformed as a spectator, they're more likely to be game-solving and thus pro-town.
  • If they know who PRs are, they're probably going to be subconsciously biased towards advice for those roles.
  • If they know who the scum are, they're more likely to accidentally have advice for their exact situation that players can link.
  • If they're as informed as the mod, might as well have the mod do the job, and it's generally considered that's not good.
This should be required reading for...everyone for anything, really.

Also having SE's and IC's as players kinda gives newbies a better understanding of how to play than just telling them
