Mafia Game Rules

The MS global forum rules and guidelines can be found here.

However, a lot of situations that players may, for whatever reason, feel ought to be disallowed are not covered by that ruleset.
For those rules, it is the longstanding stance of the mod team that it is the responsibility of the individual game mods to prohibit and deal with.

What other rules do you feel should be put in place by players moderating games?

Activity requirements, for example, are part of individual game rulesets as opposed to a sitewide rule governing posting.

It hasn't come up recently for me, but it has in the past, and I think it's often overlooked:

"No conveying any sort of message, hidden or otherwise, using your avatar"

What counts as a message becomes a hard thing to define so I guess it's up to the mod.

Generally, site rules cover these already; you can't use quotes from an ongoing game in your Sig, and avatar/signature modifications off of role are bringing outside influences into the game--which is explicitly forbidden.

Changing your avatar for one game (as long it doesn't contain any non-public info) should be finish though, right?

You can change during signups, but not change in a game-related way during the game (I'd consider that to violate the "communication about ongoing games" rule).

Changing during signups is fine because the game isn't ongoing at that point.

As for the question in the OP, Callforjudgement's Standard Rules is my full list of rules, plus explanations of the motivations behind them.

The rule is there to prevent things like breadcrumbing via avatar choice--if you ask for someone to make you an avatar in a game and they make you that avatar and post it in that game, I wouldn't call it a rule violation for you to change it in game; similarly, if you are discussing changing an avatar mid-game and bring up options in that game, I wouldn't call it a rule violation for you to change it in game.

But, say you're in a UPick.
After you get your role PM, you change your avatar to be something related to your pick--that's absolutely a rule violation; from the moment you got your role PM, you knew what it was going to be.

Say you're in a game themed around, oh, say, pokemon.
Selecting your favorite pokemon before you have your role PM is fine.
Selecting the pokemon you got in your role PM after you got your role PM is not.

There's some honor-system involved, but mostly this rule's fairly self-evident for what's an outside influence and what's not.
