Secret Alts

Post Post #0 (ISO) » Sun Apr 21, 2019 6:20 am

I think secret alts should be allowed to join games without disclosing their mains.

There are plenty of moderators eligible to run one game or another, and if each and every one of them asks for the identity of secret alt's main each time said secret alt tries to join, then it would eventually become known to every member of MS and would therefore cease to be a secret alt. People make secret alts for a reason, and sometimes it requires complete anonymity. There is also the fact that some moderators will utilize the knowledge of secret alts to press and in-game advantage.

I believe that the confirmation that the player in question is a secret alt is enough to let them play, and that no further details should be required from them.

If people make a secret alt, they do it for a reason. Respect that reason. Respect their anonymity.

(Note: In spite of what some people might think, this isn't aimed at any particular individual.)

I symphatize with that, however,

is it that common for moderators to ask for alt identity?

As someone that has created a lot of alts myself, I never had a problem with them, and was able to join all of my games without disclosing my identity beforehand (during in-game though I almost always reveal who I am but that`s another topic).

I understand your opinion, but maybe a easier solution would be to not join games that doesn`t allow secret alts?

I mean, there is also games that doesn`t allow hydras or newbies.

Because depending on the circumstances and mod`s opinions, there might be reasonable reasons for asking the alt`s identity too.

Do you think that there`s not enough games that a secret alt could play without problems? Or what you`re arguing is that every moderator in every game should never ask for an alt`s identity?

Mods need to know alts in games with woto/wotc/wotm. A lot of mods don't use those, but the ones who do would rather the game doesn't see someone spend a two month game complaining about how someone joined a game that they did not want to play with. Likewise, sadly on this site some people join games regularly without really committing to playing them and mods using wotm would rather not have slots that are missing half of day 1 while the player flakes out and then is replaced.

No. A thousand times no.

The mod should be able to keep the discretion of the secret alt - if the mod can't do that, find a different mod. Either way, you must have to disclose your secret alt to the mod and mod alone, to ensure the fairness of the game.

I would have probably posted a serious response if the author wasn’t someone who makes it a common day practice to make alts.

secret alts* are fine. let the mods be the line of defense against them.

mods want to run good games. if players feel like secret alts are ruining their game experience, they will be banned.

nobody here deserves anonymity. you either get it or you don't.

*so long as it's disclosed in the registration form. otherwise super fuck yourself.

I've run games before now which contained a player who I knew was an alt, but I didn't know who their main was. (As a moderator, I tend to be fairly permissive of who can be allowed in.) As it happened, they ended up replacing with their main eventually, but I wouldn't have minded if the alt stayed secret all along.

That said, mods should have the right to reject players from games if they think it's necessary, and using a secret alt to get around a mod or player blacklist would be a huge problem.

On the flipside, I get very annoyed when players reveal the identity of each others' alts for an in-game advantage. In general, if you're using a secret alt, nobody in-game should know who the person behind the alt is, so if you have to reveal an alt's identity to a moderator, that moderator and that alt shouldn't play games together in the future. Having an alt for which some players know who it is, and others don't, is an out-of-game influence which can ruin games.

There is no such thing as a secret alt.

Why do I get the idea you want this so you can go around players blacklists easier?

Also loving the signature.

I mean MJL and Nancy Drew are both in a game at same time right now. And I have never been in a game with MJL before.

If people were to secret alt what would stop them from joining the same games across accounts? We should probably ban that.

I have no alts on this site other than MaryJoLisa2, which I needed to make to get this account approved. It had turned out that while creating this account, selecting my correct age group proved too difficult for me. Trust me. That was hard. :P
