Mechanics with the most missed potential?

Post Post #0 (ISO) » Sun Aug 11, 2019 2:16 pm

Post by Gamma Emerald »

Anyone feel like any mechanics in past mafia games could have been better or more interesting under different circumstances?
To start I think the mechanics of the Magic the Gathering cycle of Varsoon's Variety Hour had some good potential but wasn't able to be fleshed out due to the nature of that game. The other mechanics were cool too but the MtG stuff I don't think has been used in another game like the others (while for example the Genocide/Pacifist mechanic of Undertale felt like the "mood" mechanic or whatever it was called from Steven Universe Mafia 2).

last wills?
Of all tyrannies,a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end they do so with the approval of their own conscience.

Varsoon was sick a lot and had also internet issues that caused lengthy time disruptions.

I’ve been dying to have him revive it or have someone else create comparable mechanics.

I always loved the idea behind Kingmaker and it made me sad when the breaking strategy was discovered

My bad, I meant Assassins in the Palace.

That's the one where scum get one shot to kill the King, and town knows who the king is. So the town can just random lynch every day with no discussion. Anyone who protests is scum, so scum have no choice but to go along.

Since there's no discussion, scum pretty much has to shoot at random IF they even survive day after day of random lynching.

How do you get around the issue of selection?

If you select using actual randomness, it can land on the King. If you just lynch whomever the first player to post names, scum can direct the lynch. If the town refuses to lynch the player selected, that gives the scum a big hint. If the town tries to be sneaky and say that the person doing the nominating must be scum after they named a VT to be lynched, the nominator is probably town and the scum don't assume that the nominee was the king.

First player to post names, with the proviso that nobody can do it twice.

Scum get two chances to find the King (one name + one shot), and that's it.

Terror From The Deep Mafia had a cult leader/sk hybrid that took over other players' minds. The game was played wholly with alts to enable this.

The role was crosskilled N1. Always thought that was a shame.

Modding rule #1- the mod's favorite role will always be the first to die
