Games to read to improve read accuracy

Post Post #0 (ISO) » Wed Apr 22, 2020 1:57 am

Anyone have some good games (classics or modern games are fine) to read so I can guess at them and improve my own reads? I figured I'd take this time to read games over and improve. Thank you. If anyone would like to read games and solve / make guesses with me, that would be swell as well.

I think Undertale S Open is a good sort of game for this. I would not recommend the previous two runs of the setup.
It doesn't have spoilers in the OP because I'm lazy.
I'll put a link to its neighborhood at the point I think it'd be appropriate to consider reading in case anyone decides to read it.

I actually did this as a project for a couple months last year and the discord server I used for it still exists if you would like an invite

I even still have the full list of games I used for it and can forward that over too, just know that the quality does... vary a bit :P I mostly chose random ones

Could you read a game from page 2 or so and try and play along?
Mostly retired. Unless you ask or it's something interesting.

Well without psychic precognition that kind of deletes the "good" in "good games" from what Ranmaru is requesting.

What defines a good game? I'd use normals but beyond that?

A good game had strong players playing in it. You will learn more from watching such a game.

I feel like I'm blowing my own trumpet here, but check out newbie 1995, I feel like the game had a bit of everything. Good plays, bad plays, tunnels, etc etc.

The best games to read for this are your own town games.

Go back and read the ISOs of the players you were reading incorrectly. Try to identify where YOU went wrong (don't accept "This townie was just playing so terribly, it's not my fault" as an answer).

If you're looking for more immediate returns on your time investment (reads-wise) I would recommend reading all games played by a particular player (ideally one that you play with often) vs. games that are "good". Either good games are common in which case it's a useless characterization, or they're uncommon in which chase they're not very representative for what you'll get in practice. On top of that finding things that work in general past a certain point is a *very hard* endeavor (but for people who want to do that I still think timestamps are a way better place to start than actual post content). Identifying things/errors/successes in a game by game basis is also fairly difficult (don't be results-oriented blahblahblah).

I would recommend reading games of players you frequently misread. Is there a pattern or certain type of player you misread? Focus on learning those strategies imo.
